Request: Nightwing #93-#94
By request, scans of Nightwing's rape by Tarantula and the fall-out.

As a reminder, Blockbuster has been screwing Dick's life. He's had Dick's apartment building blown up with all the tenants inside, he's had a fire devastate Haly's circus during a show (which resulted with more than 30 people dead, despite Dick being there to help), and he wanted Tarantula – vigilante of the “I'll just kill him!” variety and all-around Little Miss Happy-Go-Lucky Sociopath – to kill Barbara, as Dick's girlfriend, but Tarantula was genre-savvy enough to get that it would just make Babs a saint in Dick's eyes, so she manipulated the situation and Barbara broke up with Dick. Dick has also had to resign from the force since his captain ex-partner figured out his identity and couldn't condone a vigilante on the force.

Then Dick convinced Tarantula to help him take Blockbuster down the legal way; she agreed, and everything looked like it was going to work and if you've seen even one Joss Whedon show you know that means everything blew up in their faces pretty bad.

Nightwing #93:

So now Dick has been confronting Blockbuster, and Blockbuster is taunting him that he's going to keep on screwing Dick's life for as long as there's a breath left in him, and Nightwing doesn't kill, so there's no way out. And Tarantula shows up with a gun and tells Dick to get out of the way.

She shoots.

Nightwing 94:

The next two issues are titled Road to nowhere, which I'm sure must've made people snicker as much as I did when the last words of Nightwing: OYL were something like “please tell me it's over stop.”

Black and white = flashback.

She makes him break into a bed and breakfast.

[In the present, they find themselves fighting Copperhead, Tarantula gets poisoned, Dick (of course) has the cure, and Tarantula follows Copperhead. Dick accuses her of wanting to solve the problem by murdering Copperhead, Tarantula replies that he has issues, and leaves.]

[in the present he puts on his costume and the issue ends with him not taking Babs' call; she tells him that Blockbuster has been found dead in Blüdhaven, and clues point to Tarantula being involved.]

There are no words for how much I hate this. Did they even deal with this afterwards? I want Bruce comforting Dick and Timmy being uncertain and careful and Alfred being awesome and supportive. That would almost make up for how much I want this sucks.

Well, the following issues have Dick neck-deep in denial and unable to tell anyone one word about either Blockbuster or Tarantula and Bruce being completely blind - it was around War Games, so the period was pretty bad for everyone, and the next arc is Dick in the Mafia and away from everyone else. After that it's off to OYL and the less said about that the better.

So no, it wasn't dealt with that I know of, except for Devin Grayson being honest enough to keep Dick depressed and struggling. ...And Winick's stuff over in Outsiders, whose Dick was certainly grimngritty enough.

That first scene always makes me feel like I'm reading a gender-reversed version of Howard Roark "taking" Dominique Francon in The Fountainhead, and the original version of that scene was already ONE VERSION TOO MANY.

ATTENTION NON-FANFIC AUTHORS: IF I READ A RAPE SCENE WRITTEN BY YOU, AND IT MAKES ME FEEL LIKE YOU WROTE IT WITH ONE HAND JAMMED FIRMLY DOWN THE FRONT OF YOUR PANTS, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.

And since it's so divisive to accuse any character of being a Mary Sue anymore, I'll say instead that Tarantula is SUCH a Poochie from The Simpsons.

It is kind of interesting to read this after Bruce's revelations about Jason. Dick's way of dealing with sexual assault: Decide it was your fault and go into denial and guilt. Yay!

There is still something so weird about how this characters gets stuff like this happening to him and he's also the one constantly getting sexual comments from everybody. Well, not weird so much as...disturbing.

Excellent points all around.

Dick's way of dealing with sexual assault: Decide it was your fault and go into denial and guilt. Yay!
I wish this wasn't so often a case of truth in fiction.

It'd be interesting if Dick realizing what sort of trauma Jason is implied to have endured could make him think about this, but somehow I don't think it's in the cards. And not just because Dick seemed clueless as to Bruce's implications.

To more clearly articulate my complaint in the previous post, I despise how PASSIVE Dick was throughout all of this. It was needless, it was unjustified, and it makes the character look stupid and weak, first that he wouldn't make any move to stop Tarantula from killing Blockbuster, then that he wouldn't resist or protest his own rape in any way - which makes me feel REALLY squeamish, because it feels like Devin Grayson, like Ayn Rand, wanted to write a "rape" scene which seemed just barely consensual enough that she could get off to it - and THEN, that Dick STAYED with Tarantula, and TOLERATED it when Tarantula did things like THROWING A KNIFE AT BARBARA'S HEAD.

No, this is not gender-biased commentary, and no, it is not victim-blaming, because it'd be just as offensive to show a female character reacting so passively to her own violation, unless some sort of credible in-story justification was given for their behavior, and I'm sorry, but with all that Dick has been through, I don't buy that any costumed crimefighter with his experience, skill level and demonstrated willpower - whether they were male or female - would break so easily, and so completely, under such circumstances.

This was Devin Grayson falling into the teenage fanfic writer trap of trying too hard to convince us that the character's latest ordeal was OMG TEH WORST TRAUMA THEY HAVE EVAR EXPERIENCED, and I ALWAYS reject such Writer's Fiat stunts. Then again, since Devin Grayson actually started out as a fanfic writer, and was recruited by Denny O'Neil because he liked some of her fanfic, I shouldn't be surprised (and no, I'm not kidding about any of this).

I think the Blockbuster killing was specific enough angst, the rape was just overkill because it clouded an idea with potential by the equivalent of shouting "FIRE!" in a crowded theater. Once someone gets raped, you can't make the story about anything else. And since it was never really dealt with, it's just this big pile of narm waiting for a hack writer to use it later for wangst. This would've been a much stronger story if some editor had put his foot down and said "Uh, yeah, NO."

I remember not liking this rape one bit when it came out.

As a male, I'm offended and find it sexist.

Had this scene involved Supergirl in Nightwng's role and some big scary male like Lex Luthor or Lobo in Tarantula's role everyone would've picketed...said "WOMEN IN REFRIGERATOR" and SEXISM!!!

As I've said before, this whole scenario was ridiculous. It required Nightwing, scion of the Bat-clan, leader of the Teen Titans, the Outsiders, one time leader of the JLA and generally all round best connected hero in the DCU to become Billy No-mates and no one notices.

Of ALL the heroes in the DCU for Blockbuster to target, Dick is probably the only one who could deal with a villain saying "I shall target your family, I shall target your friends, and I shall never stop" with a simple "My family starts with Batman, my friends start with Superman... get back to me on how that works out for you, would you?"

Then he opens the nearest door, and arrayed outside are half the Outsiders, all the Titans, and some JSA'ers along for laughs (Some have popcorn) "And I have the freaking JLA on speed dial, you idiot. These are just the ones who could make it here at short notice. Shift change at eight."

[info]box_in_the_box
2009-05-21 06:17 pm UTC (link)
MSL:Male rape is a topic rarely touched on in comics. Why is it suited to bring it into Nightwing?

DEVIN GRAYSON:For the record, I’ve never used the word “rape,” I just said it was nonconsensual (I know, aren’t writers frustrating? *smiles*)

SOURCE:

Imagine a male writer saying the exact same words about a female character he'd written, and tell me, with a straight fucking face, that both male AND female fans wouldn't be ready to string him up by his fucking balls, AND RIGHTLY FUCKING SO.

RAPE DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY!!! GOODNIGHT!!!

Yeah, this is complete shit. Unless she started spiking Nightwing's water bottle with Viagra BEFORE she shot Blockbuster, there's no way in hell Nightwing could have gotten it up while he was having a nervous breakdown...and even with drugs, I'd give it a 50/50 chance at most.

Trust me, I'm a guy and I've had a nervous breakdown from generalized stress. Your sex hormones shut down completely for at least a couple weeks.

Shame, really. Tarantula might have eventually become an interesting character, if Devin Grayson hadn't decided to use her as an Author Stand-In Sue for her own warped fantasies.

Whoever edited this would have done better to hire a male hooker for Ms. Grayson, dress the rentboy up in a Nightwing costume, and tell her to 'go get it out of her system' before rewriting this pile of crap.

O.K. firstly thank you to [info]runespoor7 for posting this, I now understand what all the fuss and fanfiction was about.
This is seriously creepy. I'll say definitely, it's rape, BY ANYONE'S STANDARDS. And it would have been seriously better if she'd handled it that way (I'm not sure what creeps me out the most, the act itself, or the aftermath).
I think to anyone who knows any of the Bats (OR ANY HUMAN BEING), the fact that he was in no fit shape to consent to ANYTHING, should have been fairly obvious.Understanding better now why DC hasn't released it in a tradepaper back, this is just (Shivers)

But you didn't post the page where Nightwing is reduced to sleeping on a fire escape with newspapers for blankets because he got his friends all blown up and he's ALL ALONE IN THE WORLD OMFG!!!! That was seriously hilarious!

I usually like Devin Grayson - but she'd certainly been smoking something when she wrote this. And yes, I find her ignorance of what constitues rape hard to forgive.

I have to say that the art in #93 is especially good. The shots with blood on Nightwing's hands, the shadows, the rain, the sense that the place they're in is dirty and rotting. It makes everything about that scene cold and uncomfortable, and you can understand why Dick's first instinct is to run up and out of there.

I find the panel where Tarantula says "we're free now..." to be especially sinister. You can see he's trying to sit up but that she's holding his arms/shoulders down, and with just her eyes as the only main point of light, it makes it really awful (as in the situation/scene, but artistically good).

I'm so excited. I'm a more than 25 years old and I still want to relive my childhood Super Friends fantasies :D
I actually just read the first 5 Batman and Robin issues with Dick as Batman and Damien as Robin.

sex toys are the most fun you can have without laughing.
