To more clearly articulate my complaint in the previous post, I despise how PASSIVE Dick was throughout all of this. It was needless, it was unjustified, and it makes the character look stupid and weak, first that he wouldn't make any move to stop Tarantula from killing Blockbuster, then that he wouldn't resist or protest his own rape in any way - which makes me feel REALLY squeamish, because it feels like Devin Grayson, like Ayn Rand, wanted to write a "rape" scene which seemed just barely consensual enough that she could get off to it - and THEN, that Dick STAYED with Tarantula, and TOLERATED it when Tarantula did things like THROWING A KNIFE AT BARBARA'S HEAD.
No, this is not gender-biased commentary, and no, it is not victim-blaming, because it'd be just as offensive to show a female character reacting so passively to her own violation, unless some sort of credible in-story justification was given for their behavior, and I'm sorry, but with all that Dick has been through, I don't buy that any costumed crimefighter with his experience, skill level and demonstrated willpower - whether they were male or female - would break so easily, and so completely, under such circumstances.
This was Devin Grayson falling into the teenage fanfic writer trap of trying too hard to convince us that the character's latest ordeal was OMG TEH WORST TRAUMA THEY HAVE EVAR EXPERIENCED, and I ALWAYS reject such Writer's Fiat stunts. Then again, since Devin Grayson actually started out as a fanfic writer, and was recruited by Denny O'Neil because he liked some of her fanfic, I shouldn't be surprised (and no, I'm not kidding about any of this).
