The start of a beautiful friendship.
Hello. My name is Roily Rogue and I am a Logurt fan. Logurt, for those who don't know, stands for Logan/Kurt aka Wolverine/Nightcrawler. I am hopelessly hooked on these two and their friendship in any way, shape or form. Recently, I got a hold of the first Essential X-men volume, because I wanted to study how the bond came about. After reading the beginning, I have more questions than I started with.

Behold the very earliest examples of Logurt.

And early it is. This is from Uncanny X-men #95 - only two issues (and a few weeks in the comics) after the All-New-All-Different X-men are formed. Kurt and Logan are already displaying signs of some serious buddyhood:

But Kurt has yet to know who he's dealing with. One issue later (how I love that first panel) :

Five minutes later or so, they're attacked by the demon K'ierrok (released from his lair by Cyclops' angst). The entire team is taken out, one by one. Then this happens:

(And people say the Cyclops/Wolverine relationship is intense). Now, if Kurt had any sense, he would get very far away from this gentleman and snuggle up with Colossus instead, but since he clearly has a death wish, Wolverine became his best friend.

(From the 4th Uncanny X-men annual)

407 issues later, Kurt can even bamf in Logan's precious car and call him "liebchen" without any serious repercussions. Can love get any truer?

(from Uncanny X-men #503)

I apologize for the Land.

Second to last one: why is Logan eating an albino turkey leg?

Good ol' Banshee, he made sure ter belt every other Oirish stereotype lads and lasses!

Actually, with that haircut, he kind of looks like the "Little Dutch Boy" that paints the world.

Hmmm.

I confess to loving the Classic X-Men backup story where Logan challenges Kurt to walk down the street without his image inducer.. and he does. Cuteness ensues.

"Ten years o' prayin'"? Who would Wolvie pray to--Snowbird?

I noticed that, too - it's a bit of a continuity hiccup, since it has since been firmly established that Logan is thoroughly irreligious - there's a scene where he goes up against Dracula and uses his claws to form a cross, in an effort to drive the vampire back. Dracula swats him away, and says 'that only works if you believe in it'. So having Wolverine talk about prayer seems a bit incongruous. (Of course, one could argue that here was the moment where he LOST his faith, since he prayed to lose his bloodlust for ten years, and lookie here, it didn't work.)
Still, it's nice to see Logan depicted as a guy who actually has a conscience about such things, and genuinely tries to contain the animal within, instead of basically saying 'bloodlust? SURE! Slicedyslicedyslice!', as he largely has for a while now.

He mentioned once that he tried prayer in the army and that it was a mistake. Here's the scene.
I think his origin was supposed to be different when they wrote those first issues, though.

Yeah, I've read that scene - I didn't remember the 'tried it in the army' bit, though. I don't think his origin was DIFFERENT back then so much as he didn't really have an origin - as best I know, Claremont never came up with one for him; he preferred to keep his background mysterious, as that led to more story possibilities. Also, his character was still developing back then - he was a SERIOUS jerk in the early issues.

Absolutely--and I suppose that it's even arguable that that's why he joined the X-Men, aside from not wanting to be Department H's attack dog any more.

What his exact motives were is debatable - remember, he may have chafed under authority, but he also had a pretty good surrogate family in Alpha Flight for a while. My guess is that his decision to leave was made largely on impulsive - he was pretty damn impulsive to start with, was our boy Wolvie.
