Amazing Spider-Man #591
Four pages from yesterday's Amazing, highlighting the points that will likely have people talking.

So, last issue ended with the Human Torch unmasking Spider-Man and looking shot. The opening page of this issue has Spider-Man--with no head. So much for it being a cop out like we all thought, right? RIGHT?

One of the subplots throughout the issue is what's going on with Peter's friends and family outside of the macroverse. That is, lots of time (two months) is going by. Scans_Daily members pointed out that the logic is completely wonky--that is, time should be going slower outside, not vice versa. But whatever...

So MJ tries calling Pete but the message is erased? OH, THE TYPICAL PARKER LUCK!

Also, the old guy with Aunt May is none other than Jonah's dad.

Back with the Fantastic Four...

And finally...the big reveal of who's going to be the Mayor of New York? Is it Mr. Negative? Norman Osborn? Or is it...

Actually, if the writers played with the preexisting mutual animosity between Jonah and NORMAN, it'd be GREAT, especially if Jonah invoked Dual Federalism as grounds for telling Norman and his hero-hunters to GTFO of "my city."

However, the "brain trust" has already flat-out stated that the main reason they did this was to lead into the "24/7" story arc, in which Peter Parker says to himself, "Well, if me being Spider-Man for only a few hours out of each day annoys Jonah so much, then it'll REALLY annoy him if I give up being Peter Parker and go out as Spider-Man ALL THE TIME!!!"

No, seriously; the immediately preceding sentence is almost exactly a WORD-FOR-WORD recreation of the explanation that the "brain trust" writers gave for this, in online interviews this week.

it would be nice if he did like San Francisco did and opted out.

Marvel has really written itself into a corner here, because they've so rigidly defined Jonah's role as "the man who makes Spider-Man's life a living hell," but the problem is, Norman is already fulfilling that role on a much larger scale, so the only way they can give Jonah something interesting to do is to have him do an Eddie-Brock-as-Anti-Venom heel-turn, and become Spider-Man's biggest supporter, except that would make Peter Parker's life BETTER, and the Prime Directive of NuSpidey is that PETER MUST BE MISERABLE AT ALL TIMES.

That would also make way more sense than what they're actually doing, since, well, JJJ is basically a New York Republican.

Mark Waid had ONE good idea on this score, when he said, "In this political climate, Jonah being notoriously thrifty would actually earn him public SUPPORT."

Of course, everything else that came out of his mouth was BAW BAW BAWWW I MISS THE SILVER AGE PORTRAYALS OF THESE CHARACTERS SO THAT'S WHERE I'LL BE REGRESSING THEM, so it was easy to overlook.

... But this issue he had Jonah going over his budget on a completely useless squad of Spider-police!

*sigh* And to think that Waid's last stint on the title was actually the only genuinely good storyline we've had since OMD. (You know, the subway story. That was him, wasn't it?)

I believe so, yes, but I'm not especially enamored of the "new" version of Jonah's father, so ...
