Two pages from Justice League of America 31, and the story behind them
In the latest issue of JLA, there's a short scene between Red Arrow and Black Canary. Those pages have an interesting behind-the-scenes story to them, as Dwayne McDuffie revealed on a message board some time back.

Why a simulation of a graveyard, you perhaps wonder. Here's your answer.

Some readers were discussing the fate of Hawkman and Hawkgirl in Final Crisis and whether or not they died. McDuffie chimed in with:

I wrote a scene set at their gravesite that I recently had to quickly rewrite into something not very good.

Which prompted the following exchange.

Reader: Do you actually enjoy writing JLA? It just seems to be constant editorial rewrites and bad art.

McDuffie: No, I don't.

Wow, that made me feel really sorry for McDuffie. I mean, JLA is technically DC's biggest title. It should be the title that everyone wants to work on. But it's not.

And that's terrible.

I think that this current issue epitomizes what's wrong with the JLofA. It's being fucked by editorial mandate by a guy who has been described as (IIRC) "a directionless gladhander."

It's rare that I think that I have actually wasted money, but I did here.

We need to overthrow Didio. Right. Now.

It's not just that.

It epitomizes what is wrong with superhero comics as an "industry".

unfortunately DC always seems to be on a loop of "Hey let's do something really dramatic with Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman," "Okay but we'll have to pull them from the Justice League." This is then followed by "You know Justice League really needs Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman."

Sorry, but I have point out that anyone who takes on the JLA and who is NOT expecting changes mandated by an external story is surely being short sighted at best.

I'm genuinely sorry McDuffie isn't enjoying his run, but he can hardly be surprised at goings on, with so many other cross title events happening. It's unfortunate timing (since such things have peaks and troughs), but part of the challenge of the title I'd say.

I had the same feeling when Devin Grayson mentioned how annoyed she'd been when her Nightwing run was interrupted by Bat-events, or Titan issues. Irritating certainly, but surely, based on the previous five years of the title, and knowing that Dick was a member of the Batclan, AND leader of the Titans, she HAD to know that that would happen when she took the job on?

I'm sure it doesn't help that McDuffie is frequently on the DC message boards, which is really pessimistic and critical all the time. All that negativity probably gets to him after a while.

What I would hink he is speaking to are the poliics of it all. The writters all fight over the characters. I bet its really hard to create firm stories with drama and punch cause' you always have to pass them through a committee. This shit roles downhill to the artist...

This issue was a hideous mess. I knew that I was in for a rough ride when I read the first page and saw that the artist had committed an EPIC FAILURE (if you've read the issue you know exactly what I'm talking about).

I don't know what the worst part was.

Take Hal's decision to form a new League, and Ollie going with him. It came out of nowhere, and was presented as having already happened. Hal was a colossal dick here, and Ollie was little better.

I have no idea why Dinah would approach Wally unless Barry had turned her down. That is entirely plausible, as Barry would be the first person Hal would go to when he did this, but Barry's name never even came up even though everyone knows he's back.

The bit with Clark, Diana, and Dinah was damned odd. They were far too cold to her. I understand Clark's rationale for leaving the team (New Krypton and all) but Diana... her obligations to Themyscira? Which is, as far as she currently knows, devoid of all save Hippolyta and the Circle?

Where the fuck does this even fit in the timeline?

If McDuffie is actually admitting that he's unhappy with the book, then I can just imagine what's going on behind the scenes.

Approach Wally for what? And why wouldn't she? He's been around for the past thirty years--in non-DCU time. Not sure what that is in DCU time--as the main Flash. At this point, I would say she knows him a lot better than she knows Barry.

The real question is: why would Didio let Dinah approach Wally when she could be approaching the "iconic" form of the Flash?

this is probably set after the Olympian arc and post Final Crisis. The motivations for Hal's actions is J'onn's death.

Where the fuck does this even fit in the timeline?

After Batman dies but before Babs gets her legs back after the Birds break up but before she stops talking to Dinah but after the Amazons all come back to Themyscira but before Hal's League has its first mission but after the Omens & Origins stuff but before Barry comes back but after Final Crisis but before Hawkman joins the League but after Trinity but before Static joins the Titans but after the Milestone universe crosses into the main DCU.

Come on, how is that not perfectly clear?

They got caught in a giant explosion. This was originally supposed to kill them; they actually got a mention on the memorial page at the end of Final Crisis (which also had Batman's cowl and J'onn's tomb). DC decided to revert this decision at the very last minute.

It seems to me that the problem is not that the books effect eachother it's that they don't fit together seamlessly while standing on thier own as well.

When compared to say Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy two books that crossed over this week and yet made sense and were enjoyable on their own dispite leading into a big event this kind of thing makes DC look even more shoddy.

Do you think that this is something fundementaly different about the DCU?From the begining they've never really had one consistant universe and they are consistanly pasting on new aquisitions such as Static. Maybe DC should just quit trying to maintain contiuty and just tell stories?

Or is this just terrible editing?

I'm old fashioned. An editor is for telling you what you did wrong. "Superman is blue now. Put in an editor's note saying this is pre-blue."

When a council of editors is telling you what to write...in Marvel, they rewrote scripts...in DC mandating rape in a story in order to be controversial...the story will suffer.
