I like Magog, but I like Power Girl stepping in and kicking his ass to take charge more.

This. Though I find it strange that she's beating him up on three separate covers. It can't possibly take sixty-plus pages for her to kick his ass.

Maybe they felt we deserved 60+ pages of PG kicking Magog ass?

In Kingdom Come, he was Superman's replacement, so I'd guess he can take a lot of punishment. Plus, he's military, so I'd guess he knows how to dish it out, too.

Well of course he can take a lot of punishment. He's a demi-god/god who still doesn't know the full extent of his power.

In Kingdom Come, he was only Superman's idealogical replacement. Power wise, he seemed to fall way short.

Agreed. That was supposed to represent a shift in public thinking of what a hero is or should be.

Which is why I'd prefer to see him being written by somebody who's actually served in the military IRL, if they're going to use the character's military background to justify the neocon author soapboxing coming out of his mouth.

Because speaking as a veteran myself? I want to smack the taste out of Magog's fucking mouth every time he uses it to talk.

I've never served myself, and I'm reasonably certain my politics don't agree with your politics, but I feel somewhat the same.

He doesn't come off as someone who's served. He comes off as someone who wants to have served.

HOLY SHIT, THIS.

See, I can actually buy off on characters having political positions that differ from my own - for fuck's sake, Rorschach is one of my all-time favorites - but his perspective doesn't feel EARNED, if that makes any sense.

I'd love the chance to write Green Arrow some time. Or hell, Captain America. I wouldn't agree with everything the character would be doing, but I still think I can treat the characters with the respect they deserve.

but his perspective doesn't feel EARNED, if that makes any sense.

Yeah. I only met a few servicemen and women, but they all seem much less likely to jump without being cornered. And his taking of "field command" doesn't ring true, either. IMO, someone of Magog's experience would easily recognize all of these people in the JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA WHICH HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE BEFORE AMERICA JOINED WWII would have some idea how to act as superheroes. I could see him being a bit off balance with their lack of chain of command, maybe. I could see him being thrown by what he might consider "hot-dogging" on their part. I can even see him just shaking his head, keeping quiet, and going with the flow. But taking command? That's . . . no. Not what a military guy would do. Even an officer, which is what Reid's supposed to have been.

Because officers? IME, officers only look like they are sure and in command because they've just been given commands by someone above them who also looks sure and in command, so they have the example to emulate.

And I can't completely blame Willingham for this. The seeds were sown back by Johns, even if he didn't do much with them.

Even though I think Ayn Rand is literally Crazy Evil in terms of her philosophy, I would pay money to see the original Vic Sage Question return and be written as a completely straight-faced Objectivist hero.

Well . . . part of me does. I would love a Question: Year One story where Vic's going balls-to-the-wall about how evil everyone in the world is but him, and stuff like that. I maybe wouldn't enjoy it, but I'd be entertained.

. . .

But I like that he mellowed out, a bit, with experience.

Aaron "The Mad Whitaker" Bourque; of course, I don't like that he's dead . . . oooooh. I just got a flash of a Question: Year One sorta like Batman: Year 3; where Rene is investigating something that turns out is related to Vic's operations when he first started out. That would be so cool. Like they were working together . . .

Exactly. I recall seeing scans of an issue where he harped on his handful of years of military service and how that trumps the decades of experience at superhuman combat Jay Garrick and Alan Scott have been amassing since well before he was born.

I so wanted to see someone ask "So, is disregarding experts on mission parameters, insubordination to authority figures, and attempting to usurp chain of command why you got thrown out of the military?"

Not that I want to spoil anything for you, but that's kind of the point of the story. Before he was Magog he was a model soldier who respected the elders in the JSA. His behavior is changing because of what Gog did to him. This isn't the normal Lance Corporal David Reid.

Bill Willingham, current JSA co-writer, is former military police. He'll only be writing the character for a while, though; once the team splits, Magog will be going to the JSA ALL-STARS spin-off, written solely by Matt Sturges.

No shit? I owe him an apology, then, for real. I mean, I still think his writing of Magog is for shit, but I absolutely do not want to disrespect his service to our country, no matter how unintentional it might have been on my part. I actually checked his wiki, but it said nothing about his service.
