Yet another jab to the fans of the Spider-Marriage from the "Brain Trust"...
...only this time it's from Hercules' "Assault on New Olympus" story.

This was written by Fred Van Lente, who I hopefully don't have to introduce given his history here.

Honestly. On one hand, the attitude is just, "Get over it!" and the on the other hand they like throwing salt on the wound with these little jabs to the fans.

This pretty much ends all possibility of debate regarding Quesada's motivations:

I learned very quickly that the dumber the thing I said online, the more hits we got, and ultimately, the viral message will get carried by the fans who're irate about it. I'll take it, you're promoting my name, you're promoting our policies, you're promoting Marvel. So, I did learn to play with the internet in that fashion. And that's always fun to do, to say, 'Okay, what can I say today that will piss people off?'

You're just poking people with the internet as your stick.

It's fun.

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking about. Thanks.

Okay, yeah. That was quite ill spoken on Quesada's part. What the hell?

But... he's talking about statements he makes, not the content of comics. Add that to the fact that there there's no evidence he wrote the joke under discussion, that there are plenty of other people who could have written that line -- not least of whom is the writer -- and I'll stick to my statement that there's no reason the line needs to be anything more than a harmless joke, no different than the "yellow spandex" line from the X-Men movie.

Of course, he could've used the concise version: There's no such thing as bad publicity -- or as Oscar Wilde put it, "The only thing worse than being talked about, is not being talked about."

Had he done that, though, he wouldn't have you constantly giving him credit for all the bad things you (and I to a lesser extent) think he has done.

...

Every time I read some statement from Quesada, I actually picture him as the "college frat-boy" trapped in a middle-aged man's body who never grew up matured.
