'Tec 858, what's Renee up to?

The Question back-up went to 10 pages this month! That means I can post more!

We last saw Renee running from some dudes at Chandless' place. The dudes never stood any chance at catching her, and they feel bad. Surely, it must be a problem on their end.

Renee peels out on a motorcycle!

Checking the manifest she swiped last month, Renee rides out to Long Beach to intercept a boat called the Indigo Star. Before hopping aboard though, she checks in with Tot.

Now who is she having him call? Keep reading.

Yeah, it's the right boat.

She makes her way inside while Tot pumps info in her ear.

Too bad wireless signals get trouble from metal walls.

But look what our hero finds in the hold!

Louisa' the one in the back, right along Renee's eyeline in the middle of the page.
Renee gets jumped by the captain, who tells her she's not very smart for coming alone. Lucky they made that call, huh?

You're never alone when the FBI's got your back.

Hector Soliz arrives (did the FBI call him, or Renee?)

makes you kind of wonder what Renee's explanation to the FBI for hanging around was, unless she's finally got a real PI's license (do those take beyond state-lines?)

Either way, case closed.

Next month, Huntress makes the scene! Still no clue whether she'll be wearing a better costume, though. Cully's pleading the fifth and Rucka's not easy to get a hold of. Looking forward to it either way!

I haven't been that interested in the backup, and I'm really hoping there's a lot more to it then what's here. I mean, it seems so bland then what I've come to expect from Rucka riting Renee, you know?

I've been feeling that about both halves, honestly. The Kate stuff's just moving too slow (and the art doesn't do much for me the way it seems to for the rest of the world, so that's not redeeming), though it seems like it'll read well in trade. The Renee stuff I'm less confident about even collected - maybe I'm still just hung up on "Montoya shouldn't be a cape," but it just seems so... I don't know, generic, I guess. I can't think of a single thing about this first arc that requires Montoya to be Montoya, it really seems like "good guy investigation story #601, serial numbers pre-filed for your convenience."

Well, a lot of first arcs that don't deal with the origin can be like that, I guess. If this were a regular book instead of a back-up, it woud've been done in two issues with pages to spare, maybe something to ground the characters a little more. This one did burn a lot of page-time on action (which is funny, 'cos i usually end up cutting those kind of scenes when I share a comic).

It isn't exactly personal, sure, but the only thing Renee's been connected to since she has become a cape is the Dark Faith, and with Kate still dealing with them, that might risk reader fatigue (or even further reader fatigue in some cases). This arc seems to me like it's kind of moving Renee back to her investigatory roots, only on a broader scale. Whether that actually takes, we'll have to stay tuned to see.

It's pretty good for action, and alright as a detective story, but I really would prefer it as a full-length story. It would give it a better chance at being good Renee.

All in all, though, I've been kind of more excited by it then the main feature (though this month's really had me!)
