Bruce?

[locked to selina k.]

Here, kitty, kitty.

[email to penny r. at the wayne foundation.]

Hi Ms. Ross,

My name is Stephanie Brown, and I'm the one who originated some of the (now apparently defunct) clinics in the city. I see now that you're in charge of Wayne funding for them. Care to chat? I just came back from another Got from a stay in Nigeria with Doctors without Borders and would love to help out in any way I can. I still also have access to the one clinic that is still open and intend to continue working there.

Email or call me at [phone number] if you ever have the chance.

- Stephanie Brown

[locked to eddie n.]

Hi I'm bac You probably don't want to [Just a blink, but nothing posted.]

[public.]

Oh, Gotham. I missed your crappy deli coffee more than you'll ever realize.

Twenty then.

[She left the comment on the journals, a couple of blinks following the words before she closed it off completely. Pacing around her newly reclaimed room at Wayne Manor (for the time being, at least), she paused to crouch down and hold her bigheaded, yellow-furred dog Flounder for a long, long hug. There were a lot of things she had missed about this Gotham when she was stuck in that other world and spending time (by choice) in Africa. And that goofy bastard? Was among the top of the list. She'd been lonely back there, and it was easier to focus on missing her cat and dog instead of the people she lost. It was a strange, strange sensation to be surrounded by people constantly, and still feel alone.

But she hadn't lied to Selina or Eddie. It'd given her time to consider everything, and she liked to think that she had things in better sense. Sure, her head was kind of spinning, and sure she still had to remind herself that people move on and that happiness was the most important thing for everyone. It was to her, of course, the most important thing, but it still took a moment to shake off things. A moment, a lingering hug of her fluffy, fat dog, and she pushed away those niggling nerves to stroll into the hotel. Twenty minutes she'd given Selina, and she made her way to the Marvel door. In jeans, purple Chuck Taylors (not the wedding sneakers though) and a baggy sweater that slid off her shoulders (no, thirty-three years old and she still hadn't changed her sense of style at all).

She looked healthier, more put together than she had been the last time she blinked in and out of this hotel, this Gotham. She even managed to look relaxed as she leaned against the wall closest to the Marvel door and scrolled through the journal network to try to glean what she'd missed in the interim months. Bruce being Mayor, Dick aging down, mobs disappearing then reappearing from the city. Maybe she hadn't been expecting it to be so messy when she came back, but expectations had become something she didn't cling to anymore. Rolling with the punches, that was something she was becoming better with again.]

[Selina opened the door to the penthouse twenty three minutes in. A little late, but there was no apology on her features when she peered out into the hallway and saw the no-longer-baby bat there.

Oh, young Stephanie had been cute enough, but Selina would be lying if she didn't admit to missing the older version of the little blonde bat. This Stephanie, for all that she'd been miserable and angry when she disappeared, was Gotham familiar. She'd been through all the same things as the kitty cat, lived through all the horrors and survived all the pain. There was something about that, and Selina couldn't quite put her finger on what, but it made for a special bond. Shared experience, even when they didn't always see eye-to-eye on things. She'd hoped, when Stephanie and Eddie first disappeared, that they'd ended up in better places, that they'd ended up happy. She still hoped that, and while she knew Eddie had returned in better spirits, she wasn't sure about the blonde. She knew what it was like to love someone and not have them, and maybe they weren't in the same boat? But Selina knew how that water felt, and she knew it very well.

But enough staring. Selina, garbed in black leggings and a slate v-neck that reached much too far down her thighs to be her own, smiled wide at the blonde in purple. She was happy to see the other woman, and she didn't bother to hide it with all that Gotham-brand disinterest she'd given to the tiny blonde not-bat.]

You're a sight for sore eyes, kitten. [And she motioned inside, where slow jazz played and a bottle of red was open on the coffee table, two glasses and one half-mast.] Do you want to go out, or shall we stay in?

[Stephanie smiled softly, an affectionate and happy expression that grew by the second especially when she saw the kitty reciprocate her happiness. She pushed off the wall, sliding her tablet into her bag before slipping into the door.] I could say the same for you. I deeefinitely didn't meet anyone like you in Nigeria. [Her blue eyes swept over the expansive penthouse, admiring it briefly before turning back to the other woman, smile still in place.] You know any good places around here?

[And then, she took a moment, like she was considering something before stepping forward with open arms.] I know, I know you aren't a hugger, but indulge me, okay? [She wrapped her arms around the other woman's shoulders then, holding her tight and hoping she wouldn't fight the embrace.]

Of course you didn't meet anyone like me in Nigeria. Too warm. I obviously prefer the unrelenting chill of Gotham and New York. [Selina's smile was warm, lush, and she hated the cold. Oh, she loved a good sunny patch as much as any cat, even if she had a terminal dislike of sunny places.] I know a place or two.

[Selina's stilled for a moment, the hug unexpected and like a cat that was grabbed around the middle, but she relaxed a second later. She hugged the little blond tightly, despite not being much of a hugger, and then she stepped back.] Indulged?

[But she stayed close, and she looked over Stephanie's face with those curious and questioning eyes of mossy green.] You look good. Are you good? [It wasn't a casual question. It wasn't a throwaway.]

Oh, yeah. You love the cold so, so, soooo much. [Steph didn't hate the cold, but it was clear she loved some of the sun from her time during her time Doctors without Borders. Her pale skin was still pale no matter what amount of sun she got. Curse of a Gothamite growing up in overcast and smog. The acknowledgment of knowing a couple of places earned a smile before arms enveloped around her as well. Stephanie sighed happily, fingers digging into the other woman's shoulders for a moment like the kitty cat was a grounding force for her in a loopy whirlwind of coming back home and finding things out.

When Selina pulled back, Steph smiled easily.] I'm...better. [Casual or not, she was edging around the question a little maybe.] Definitely better than when I last was here for sure.

[Selina noticed that pause between I'm and better. She noticed, but she didn't say anything immediately. Eddie and the little blonde bat, she'd never seen something spiral quite so quickly, explode quite so brilliantly, and she'd be lying if she said it didn't sap her faith in things working out, at least a little. But no point pouring salt on the wound, and she just reached for a red woolen peacoat from the hook near the door. She cinched the coat at the waist, and she put her hand on the small of the kitten's back.]

Come on. Let's go sit somewhere that doesn't have a couch, and you can tell me all about it. [And she led Stephanie out to the building's elevator. Posh, marble, Manhattan, and the sidewalk was pristine, no graffiti anywhere, no stains. There wasn't blinding brightness in primary colors, not like Metropolis, but it was certainly different than Gotham. She fell into easy step beside the other woman.] Well, what do you do now?

[Stephanie was glad she'd decided to bring a coat, and she smiled a little more faintly than earlier. They both knew what she was thinking about, and while she had had her time to heal, there was still stings. Throbbing pains now and then that reminded her of lingering feelings that wouldn't go away with a snap of a finger. If Steph knew that Selina had compared her to the kitty cat, she couldn't find a good reason to argue. Instead, she was guided dutifully out of the apartment and through the hall to the elevator.]

Bougie ass place. [A tease with a smirk as the speedy elevator jetted them down to the bottom floor, where they could spill out onto the sidewalk. She'd been to New York before, years ago for her, when there was alien invasion clean-up to be done. When she thought she was.... Whatever. That didn't matter. New memories, and she smiled a little easier towards Selina.] In Gotham? I was hoping to get back to the clinics, but I've heard they went to shit. I contacted the head of funding at the Wayne Foundation, and hopefully she'll be able to help somehow. [A shrug.] I don't know what else to do. I don't know what else there is right now. [She sounded a little bemused as she adjusted the bag on her shoulder before sticking her cold hands into her pocket.]

[The walk to The Gilroy was short, and Selina didn't bother with a cab. Marvel's New York, unlike Gotham, was a place for walking, and you didn't see a lot of cars racing by. It was cold out, but not uncomfortable, and she wasn't very good at staying put.

She chuckled at Steph's description of the building, the area, and she lifted a graceful shoulder.] I'd robbed every jewelry store within ten miles when I purchased it. Bruce had given my penthouse away, and I think I was making a point. Not that he knows that; he's never been here. [He was one of the few in Gotham that hadn't used the penthouse in Marvel for one thing or another, but she didn't seem bothered by it. Bruce? Bruce abhorred Marvel.]

The clinics went by the wayside. The mob war became front and center, and I think they'll start pouring money back into the community once they reestablish assets. Buying out all the little Families? It took a lot of cash. [It was true enough, but Selina was surprised to hear that the little blonde bat had to ask the head of funding for help with her little improvement project. But, then, Selina had no idea what was happening at Wayne these days.] We missed you, kitten. Gotham missed you. You did a lot of good there.

[Stephanie inhaled the cold, sharp air, and her head cleared just enough for her to focus on the walk and not on the other things on her mind. New York had been in shambles the last time she had been here, and it was nice to see it alive and bustling. A different sort of bustling than Gotham, to be sure, but a bustling nonetheless. She'd missed this in the villages of Nigeria as well: the constant buzz of city life. It was so quiet at night, and the only thing that she could focus on to drown out her thoughts was the buzz of mosquitos. It unnerved the born and raised city kid for a while. As much as she loved Africa? She loved living around tons and tons of people, too.]

Of course you were. [She laughed, and afforded a quirked eyebrow at the fact that Bruce hadn't been there yet. She didn't know how things were with them. That popped up eyebrow asked it all. But that? Could be saved for inside the dimly lit bar they were going to. Stephanie opened the door when Selina stopped, and she waved the other woman inside.] I figured that's what happened. It just makes me sad that they went to shit. Real shit. The shelters too, huh? [Steph hadn't taken her time to look around all of Gotham yet, but she would when the time was right. She sighed still, disappointed that her projects had dismantled so quickly. But her smile quirked when Selina said she'd been missed.] You're just sayin' that 'cause I'm here. [Another tease, a lighthearted smirk along with it.]

[Selina echoed Steph's laugh, and it was easier now, laughing about her own pathetic neediness when it came to Bruce Wayne. Maybe that was an indication of how far she'd come, that she could laugh about it. There wasn't a hint of dampness in her mossy green eyes. As for that popped up eyebrow, she ignored it for the same reason that Steph ignored questions; they were better handled with a cocktail in hand.]

Everything. [Went to shit. When the mobs were busy pouring all their resources into acquisition? Things like the shelters suffered. Oh, sure, charity balls could be held. But everyone knew that 90% of the money raised went right back into the pockets of whoever was throwing the ball. Food, wine, entertainment, space, they all needed to be paid for, and there was never enough left over to do any real good.

She pushed open the door to the bar, and she motioned to one of the barstools at the end of a long row of wood, and plenty of space for privacy.] I'm saying that because it's true, kitten.

[She slid up on one of the stools, and she ordered a very dirty martini. Coat off, and draped over the wooden table at her elbow.] So, tell me the good stuff. [Or the bad stuff, whichever applied.]

[The laugh wasn't malicious or ill-natured. More affectionate than anything. Stephanie didn't think that Selina was pathetic, and partly because she knew what neediness was. Even if she didn't express her own neediness of a certain riddled man until it was far, far too late, and they were down the path of destruction. Down the rabbithole with no turning back. But, she pushed that all out of her mind for the moment, a familiar ache too much to bear at the moment without a strong cocktail in her hand.]

Everything. [Repeated, and a groan followed the assessment like she knew but didn't need the confirmation. Wasn't it funny how quickly that could happen in this city? And without the helping hand of a virus or a toxin or some sort of other worldly phenomenon. No, Gotham went through cycles on its own (thank you very much, Ra's al Ghul), and Stephanie wasn't particularly surprised that good things collapsed so rapidly. And then and there, she could understand Selina's abhor of the wealthy in this city. She did a lot of times frankly.

Propping herself on the barstool next to the kitty cat, she went for something a little stronger, one of their specialty cocktails with whiskey, ginger and honey infused in a tiny tumbler. A kitschy name to boot: the Irish Penicillin.] Good stuff. [Her voice was a consideration, like she wasn't sure if there was good stuff.] Well, I just got here, so I'm not sure how much good stuff there is. [Her fingers drummed on the top of the bar, and she turned to lean the side of her body on the wood and face Selina.] Well, something more interesting than good. I...might be taking up a job at Arkham as a physician. [Her eyes almost went comically wide, a sort of 'eh, eh' nudging that asked for the kitty cat's opinion unabashedly.] Since the clinics are bust for the moment, you know? And it'd be good to have eyes and ears in there. Plus, those people need some serious help. Not just some doctor who's going to dope them up on antidepressants and wave them along.

[This particular cycle that Gotham was going through, it was familiar. It was more home than anything that had happened in the city before. Gotham was built on the mobs. Oh, sure, they were known for their Bat. But without the Families? There would be no Batman. He wasn't born of villains and a rogue gallery. No, those things came later, hot on the heels of obsession, a challenge worth aspiring to take down. But he was made for this, even if he got derailed and distracted. And Eddie was right when he said the mobs were for the rogues to take down. And so they would.

She nursed her drink, and she lifted a brow at the mention of Arkham.] Watch out for Crane. He's back in charge. Some wish, though I think it reverses if he doesn't behave. [Her expression said precisely how she felt about the possibility of Crane behaving. Crane, Ra's, Joe, Cobblepot; the city was just filled with villains these days, and that was just another reason to worry about a Bat sharing time with Mayoral duties.]

It's not a bad idea. [She finally said of Arkham. Dangerous, risky, but they were all playing with fire these days, and she knew the little blonde bat was capable.] I'll keep you on speed dial. I'm running the Egyptian these days. It's a casino, a bar, whatever we Falcones need it to be. [Another quirk of brow at her own deliberate use of "we." We Falcones.]

[Every Gothamite knew that the mobs were more entwined in the infrastructure of the city than almost anything else. More than colorful rogues or even bitty bats. Mobs? Were what made the city Gotham and not just another city with its share of crime. Sure, the rogues and the bats and everything else in between filled Gotham with color, but the mobs were the backbone. It wasn't good by any means, but it was the harsh truth.

Stephanie's throat sounded a considering sort of grumble at the idea that Crane was back in charge, but maybe that was better. If she was on the inside, she'd be able to keep an eye on him. And, she had a history of being able to fight through his toxins so far. Steph? Was stubborn enough not to let some Crane nonsense take her down without a fight.] It'll be good to keep an eye on him especially then. He always finds a way to weasel around and get his way, even if it'd nearly kill him in the process. [A sigh, and she took up her whiskey drink and took a nice, healthy sip from it before quirking her eyebrow.] We Falcones. [She repeated just for her own confirmation before smirking at Selina.] Is there an open invitation there? [It was mostly ribbing because Steph was sure that there was no way a bat could go into there without things getting jacked up.]

[Selina chuckled, and then she finished off her drink and asked for a second. Two was her limit, but she fully intended to enjoy those two.] I think you better stay on the bat side of Gotham, kitten. [As for being a Falcone, she lifted a brow.] I think I was born for it, which is somewhat terrifying. But I'm good at it, and I enjoy the challenge of bossing all those smug men around. All of the little henchmen who think they deserved the Egyptian over a woman.

[It was true, and she knew it was that kind of thinking that worried Bruce. But she was a rogue, however much she tiptoed the grey line. She'd never been a bat, and she would never be a bat.] You can handle Crane. Just don't let him douse you with anything.

[Selina had killed that man once, and she remembered like it was yesterday. But these days? These days she was trying not to let the Cranes and the al Ghuls control her. And fear? Fear was nothing if not control.]

No one would believe me anyway, I've lost all my edge. [She waved at herself, smiling and taking another sip of her drink. Tattoos gone, and a lot of that PTSD inspired fatigue gone from her face.] I would be terrified of you. Those men are asking for it if they aren't scared of you, too. [And while she believed that Selina was completely capable, there was still flickers of worry across her face. Blue eyes filled with concern before she could help herself.]

Crane will be scared of me. [Steph wiggled her eyebrows, downed the rest of her drink, and asked for another as well. She took a few moments.] How are you and Bruce?

I think edges get you kicked out of the superhero club, kitten. [She said it with a smile, fond, and maybe she didn't even consider herself a member by extension these days, but she still had that soft spot for little bats.] I'm terrifying. [Exaggerated, and with a chuckle that faded into a nothing rumble in her chest.] Oh, don't worry. I can tell you're worrying. It's what I was born for, and it's rogue territory. I've worked for worse.

[Her expression turned fond when Steph said Crane would be scared of her, something warm and proud.] He will be. But you'll let someone know if you need help. [A statement, not a question, and she still thought of Steph as that little kitten some days. She sipped.]

Bruce and I? We're what we are. He doesn't have much time. [A casual lift of shoulder, because really? They all already knew that.] How's Eddie?

I think you're forgetting who's in the superhero club, kitty cat. [She smirk, fond too, and it was clear that Stephanie still considered Selina one of her closest friends, probably one of the few confidants she had left. With Eddie almost completely out of the picture, she didn't really have many people to lean on. So, she hoped that Selina would still like her enough to be friends. She didn't have many of those these days. And with that came the concern.] I'm going to worry. [A smile.] I know you're completely capable, but that doesn't stop the worry. Sorry, kitty.

[A nod.] I'm covering my bases and telling everyone, too. So if I go MIA for about a week, go check the dungeons, I might be there. [A joke, mostly. She had faith that she'd pick up on signs of foul play from Crane.] I'll tell you if something comes up. Pinky swear.

[Her eyebrow quirked up, and she sipped, and she lowered her brow.] Have you seen him lately? [A pause.] I spoke to him, to Bruce, and he's really adamant about the mayor business. I'm worried about him, too. [And the question about Eddie? Had her drink her cocktail a little faster, the burn of alcohol lightening the load in her chest. A smirk.] You probably know more than I do.

[Selina scoffed at the concept of being worried over. Her? She'd be fine, and her smile was fond and warm. Sure, things with her and the little blonde bat hadn't always been roses, but then no Gotham friendship existed without very prickly thorns.] Worry if you want, but it'll give you frown lives. Very unattractive, kitten.

[She nodded at the offer of information about Crane. That was personal, wanting to know, and it had nothing to do with Falcones or the greater good. Crane had been a thorn in her side for years with his predictable nonsense, and he had this annoying tendency of targeting people and places she cared about.]

Bruce? I saw him at Valentine's. [Soft, with a bit of a smile and a slip of softness. Softness which, of course, she shrugged off a moment later.] He's going to do this Mayor thing until he decides not to, barring anything catastrophic, and we can talk until we're blue in the face; it won't change anything. [As for Eddie?] I'm asking you, kitten.

I'm getting old anyway, and only Flounder and Bandit see me on a daily basis anyway. Might as well speed up the process. [Steph teased with a bright grin. She hadn't thought when she was younger that she'd end up wrapping her arms around her cat and dog at night instead of a certain riddled man, but here she was. And she would be okay about it. She had to be. She would be.]

Oh? [More a rhetorical sort of noise than anything. She was glad at least Bruce and Selina were working things out. They really deserved it, too.] You seem happy, Selina. Even if things are complicated. [A smile, affectionate warmth, crawled up her mouth, and she lingered on that for a moment. And then, after another sip and with a shrug:] He's fine. He's happy. [The kitty cat knew a thing or two about needing to be okay with things that weren't okay; she'd never been very good at that. She didn't envy Stephanie what she was going through. Oh, sure, Selina's love life was better, but it was still a deck of cards - a deck of cards pulled out and shuffled every few months, and that was its own kind of heartache.

She made a little sound of agreement to that little oh, and maybe it was something protective, but she hadn't told anyone about her recent issues with Bruce. Oh, Holly knew, but Holly lived with the kitty cat, and it was a little hard to avoid claws and bad moods. But the days of meowing about it? Those were done. People telling Bruce Wayne what she needed? That never helped. And she'd already told him herself. So, it was in his court, and he knew where to find her. And she? Had things to do.]

We're both terrible liars. [She finished off her drink, and she crossed her legs at the knee.] We should make this a regular thing, lying to each other in another door, with drinks. [She smiled.]

[Stephanie stopped herself from musing at the precarious states of their lives in Gotham. For now, at least, the people that she cared about the most were happy. And that, at the end of the day, was all that mattered. She kept telling herself that, and for the most part, she believed that. There was, of course, licks of jealousy here and there, especially about specific people. But, she would get over that. She had to get over all of that. And, she knew how lucky she was to have what she did. So, she would focus on that.]

I never said I was a good one. [A smirk, and she took one gulp of her drink, and then she smiled again.] I'd like that a lot. You might be the only person around here who can tolerate me that much. [A tease, and another waggle of her eyebrows.]

[Selina laughed at that waggle of brows, and she lifted her empty martini glass of a belated toast.] Here's to being able to tolerate each other. [Her smile was warm.] That's high praise for two Gotham women.

[Women, and they'd both been kittens together once, but that felt like another lifetime. She wasn't sure if they were better off now, and she'd certainly say they were more jaded, less blindly hopeful about what the world had in store for them. But they'd survived, hadn't they? And in Gotham? In Gotham that was like hitting the jackpot.]
