Journal: Public - and lock to Marauders
Exactly what rules do I have to follow when I'm forcibly removed from my time period and thrust into a world where I have met an untimely demise and am forced to spend summer holidays at school. I'll need a list.

[Marauders]

If I don't get an answer in 13 minutes exactly we are blowing this place. Guess what I found.

[Yes. Yes, it was.

James chucked his apple at the back of Sirius' (very fine) head.] Minerva, don't listen to the lies he tells you, just because he tightens your bolts. [He neared boy and bike, and leaned against the wall of the occupied stall.] Are you nearly done with your sulking? I'm getting peckish. Of course—[He sat down and retrieved his fallen, bruised apple. He cleaned it off with a simple charm. He took another bite. He spoke around the apple, as manners were for people who weren't only children with coddling parents.]—If you want to talk more, I'm happy to listen. Though I will warn you, my mouth might open.

[Huff. Apple to the head. Huff huff huff.] I'm not sulking [said a very sulking voice.]

[A few more turns of a bolt and he turned to sit on the ground with his back against his lovely motorbike.]

Your mouth is always open. [sulk. pause. open mouth. pause. close mouth. sulk. open mouth. close mouth. repeat.] Everything is so ridiculous.

I use it to eat. [Said flippantly with an entitled shrug as company. But then, more (it would never get old) siriusly, he propped his chin in his hand, legs crossed as they were and elbow on his thigh. James knew Sirius' sulks (even the fish-mimicking ones) well enough to know where to hedge and how, oftimes, to quell the more furious of the rages. Simply:] It is.

[James pretended to offer the apple to Minerva before biting it again himself. He held it out to Sirius, in case he wanted some. (However, entitled, only child of coddling parents-typical he was, James always shared.)] I never did expect you to get married. [His eyes fell on a small insect that crawled over the crest of his knee.] Seems... sad, doesn't it? We all die. I can't begin to wrap my head around all this Fit Weasley nonsense. Evans isn't here. Snivellus seems... sulkier than even he usually is. No one is in the bloody school and I have a son. This is our future. If they'd told me this coming in, I'd've opted for something else, you know? Make me a unicorn.

And talk. At great length. [Harumph. A pick of hay here with fingers black and greasy from the mechanic work, a digging in of heels into the dirt. Harumph indeed.]

[He took a bite of the apple when offered. A very pouty and sulky bite, nearly grimacing when he chewed.] I go to prison for causing your death. I'd rather you were a unicorn than having to deal with that. [And then another apple bite for good measure. This one less sulky. Just a bit less.]

Among other things at great length. [James winked lasciviously, as lewdly as he knew how, keenly aware of the teetering temper tantrum on the precipice of Sirius' mind. The Potter boy was cosseted, most certainly, but it was nothing compared to the life of Sirius, back when he was in his mother's favor—which, in true Black fashion, led to some pretty nasty habits when it came to misdirected anger.

He continued holding the apple out until Sirius seemed finished. James then set the thing on the dirty floor for his new mate, the small beetle on his knee. He transferred the thing to the delicious land of fresh apple. James adjusted his glasses and looked up at Sirius.] Does it make you feel better than I didn't have to deal with it, as I was dead? Honestly, Sirius, as terrible as that is—that's not you and it's not me. Not yet. I'm sorry your loyalty to me is what got you thrown in there in the first place, but—look, it hasn't, has it? We're here feeling up Minerva and everyone's happy. You-Know-Who is vanquished. It'll be better now. [James patted Sirius' very Muggle-y boot with fruit-sticky fingers.]

[Eye roll. Epic eye roll. But there was a half smile, a very small half smile. Sirius had an explosive temper. He'd never admit it but it came from his insane mother and while he was painfully self aware of it he would never say it aloud. Coping mechanisms. Well Developed. Healthy coping mechanisms? None.

He wiped the apple remnants from his face with the back of his hand and watched the little beetle chow down for a long moment trying to just think]

Don't apologize you four eyed git. I'm more effing bothered that the god damned loyalty was what was called into question.

[His head leaned back against his darling Minerva and tried to allow what James considered the truth of the matter to sink in.] You'd better not die before me. If this is some bloody do over, you better not die before me.

[The half smile was a victory as great as Gryffindor triumphing over Slytherin in the last game of the House Cup. It looked small, but it was an achievement. James was rightfully proud.] I am as well. Did I—[He paused, a flash of concern lighting over his face. It was snuffed out and replaced by Potter's famous alacrity.] Did I tell you what Harry said to me? About Peter?

[James sighed dramatically, but he wasn't able to keep a straight face when Sirius started with his patented pout. He grinned in what Evans called 'an idiotic fashion.' (He hadn't admitted it yet, nor would he, as Sirius kept mum on his mum issues, but he did miss Evans scowling at him from the ends of the corridor every morning he ran late to breakfast.)] Wouldn't dream of it, Padfoot. You'll go in the fire first this time 'round. That's a promise. Now stop it with that face. You're flustering me terribly, on top of Minerva, and you know I have so little self-control to begin with.

[There were two people in the world who could give his temper pause - which is why it was most important that he die first after all. He pulled a face, far from a smile, but finally there was a place to direct the anger. Win.] You didn't, but I can't imagine it was anything good.

[After which he let out an impressive string of curse words that shouldn't have gone together - but did. Something about the dedication with which he pursued the profanity. An art form.]

[James sighed, also impressively, his own art form, as it were.] Apparently, he was our Secret Keeper—mine and Lily's, sold us out. You went after him, got framed, somehow by Pettigrew, and were thrown in Azkaban. And if you've a fag on you, now's the time to share.

[He'd heard the gist but not the detail, and now that he was hearing the detail he was getting even angrier. He pulled the rumpled and wrinkled packet out of his pocket and pulled out a slight flat cigarette and lit it easily enough before he handed it to James with an exhale of smoke] That little shit for brains.

[He wanted to say he'd know all along. But how could he have? They'd loved Peter. The day before yesterday Sirius would have faced rampaging centaurs or anything else for him. Certainly would never have betrayed him.] They said I killed twelve muggles and threw me into Azkaban. [That much he had figured out.]

[James took the quashed cigarette gratefully. His mother called it a filthy habit, but he was too much of a fuckwitted teenager to care. He inhaled, the action a valve release of pressure. It was nothing but a regular fag, but, as were the rules when sharing, he passed it back.] I don't know if I believe it. I know I ought, but—maybe something happened, something that made him turn.

[The boy knew he was grasping at straws, but a part of James simply couldn't understand a betrayal of such magnitude for something Peter already had—protection, if that's indeed what it was. He couldn't fathom it. It was beyond his scope of understanding. War changed people, things, and he knew that. But it was Peter. Fullstop. James rubbed his forehead.]

So Peter killed them and got you for it? See. How am I supposed to believe that. He can barely step on a spider.

[Sirius inhaled and once again puffed the smoke out slowly and lolled his head over to look at his mate.] Can you think of anything in the world that would make you turn?

[He nodded.] Got me for leading You-Know-Who to you. Got me for killing him, and twelve other people. [As bad ass as he was pretending to be about prison. The thought of Azkaban terrified him.]

[The thought of Azkaban frightened anyone in their right mind. James peered through the haze of smoke. He adjusted his glasses again out of habit, before running a hand through his hair, sending it to even more disarray.] No. [He rubbed at an eye.] It—but you didn't, Sirius. Or are you repeating this because you intend to hurt him if he appears?

[James carefully watched the ways Sirius' stared, very intently, into the hay. He shifted, touching a trainer to the other boy's boot.] Give yourself some credit. You went six years without trying to murder—[He stopped, cold. They hadn't actually spoken about that night. James blinked and immediately chose to stick the cigarette between his lips and inhale.]

[Eyes went dark, for someone who always tried to hide their actual emotions, the raw state of this particular one completely came out of nowhere and slapped him across the face. From his best mate's mouth to right across his face with a sting that he tried to ignore by puffing his chest a bit.

Sirius thought about that day often. Often. The gravity of the situation hadn't actually settled until people started throwing the words "could have been killed" "or worse" "Remus would have been responsible" etc etc etc

He started trying to think things through more clearly. Or maybe he had been trying to kill him after all.

He often wondered. And to have it brought up now was more than he had expected.

Chest puffed out face flippantly miffed, forcing tension out of his body and curling his toes tightly in his boots instead. He didn't care. He held his hand out for the fag impatiently.] Give it here.

[There was an immediate pang of guilt inside of James—and as he didn't hide his emotions, being more of a heart-on-his-sleeve sort of bloke, he grimaced openly, whilst huffing the poor cigarette with all the care of the Hogwarts Express. It wicked down to ash and he coughed quite a bit before trying to hand the stub off with one lung coming out of his mouth. His eyes watered and his cheeks went bright red from the exertion of the escaping lung.

Inside, things were a touch more tranquil. He felt bad for reminding Sirius of what had to have been one of his lowest points. It was unintentional, he believed that, but it had also happened and had it not been stopped... James shuddered to think of the consequences. Through the veil of tears, he blinked out at his best mate, miserably. He wheezed.] Listen to me, Sirius, [cough] you're my best mate [cough]—you wouldn't—hurt Peter if he was here. You're [COUGH COUGH, he held up a hand a moment to indicate they ought pause briefly.]—not your family. Anyone who knows you [cough] knows that, alright?

[Sirius was still mad so for the first few hacks of James' cough he only took the cigarette and finished it off watching James out of the corner of his eye. He stamped the cigarette out, digging it into the dirt lest they set the barn, or the school, or God forbid Minerva, on fire.

He listened as James hacked. Bored, disinterested, but hanging on every word.] That's where you're wrong. I may not be my family, but he takes my real family away. Are you honestly telling me if he showed up here right now you'd be all trust and open arms?

[He looked at James incredulously for a moment, and completely horrified by the thought of it.]

[Sniffling, it took James a moment to hear what it was Sirius was saying. He dried his tears with the sleeve of his robe. Again, he shook his head. He knew that look, the one of disbelief. He didn't smile.] No. I wouldn't. But I wouldn't hurt him. [He sniffed again.] What if that's what turned him in the first place?

[Sirius clapped his friend on the back, concern finally outweighing annoyance and flippancy] Don't choke to death in the barn, James, the neighbors will talk about what was going on in here.

[He mulled over what James said. It was logical. Of course it was. But Sirius couldn't think on that level when he was feeling the way he was. He saw the betrayal, the loss of his friends, and his life rotting behind bars with Dementors.] Well everyone already knows you're a better bloke than me, no one will be surprised that we disagree on this issue. But we shouldn't bother because the little fuck isn't actually here.

[James laughed with one half his set of lungs.] Yes, the first thing Hagrid will assume is James Potter choked on Sirius Black's massive cock.

[He sniffled again, willing the red from his cheeks. He wiped down his glasses with an offhanded spell.] Me trying to circumvent my own death with cunning isn't being much of a better bloke. I think this is how Slytherins are born. [James shrugged. He knew it was more than that—it wasn't only his worry of Peter's switch per se that would keep him from haranguing his old friend, but he wasn't going to go saying that now. Sirius knew, anyway.] Then again, it's easier for me. I die—I don't go on to prison. I daresay I didn't have time to think about all the ways I hated Peter Pettigrew when it happened.

If it's not the first thing he assumes he hasn't been paying attention. But you did just promise I'd get to die first, so too bad. No choking to death on my cock for you today, or any day.

[Sirius shook his head, James was never going to be any kind of Slytherin] Slytherins are born of unholy unions, and unholy unions only.

[Sirius shrugged again, refusing to make any sort of eye contact and tugging on a thread that was about to be a hole in his trousers near the knee.] I haven't had more than a day to process this and I've already come up with a list of about thirty-nine ways I hate Peter Pettigrew, and a list of about a hundred and twelve ways to deal with him.

Alas. My dreams, shattered.

Come now. You're of an unholy union and you turned out fine. [James crawled on the stall floor, on hands and knees, to perch himself beside Sirius, instead of across from. He did this so he could pinch his mate's cheek—but, he withheld upon the realization that this couldn't be solved with such affection. Sirius wouldn't even look at him. James bent forward in a huff, his finger in the dirt and hay, sketching something useless and ill-defined, something out of habit. If it looked like LE + JP, that was pure coincidence.] You think you're like them? Your mum. Your family. For thinking that?
