Journal: Public - and lock to Marauders
Exactly what rules do I have to follow when I'm forcibly removed from my time period and thrust into a world where I have met an untimely demise and am forced to spend summer holidays at school. I'll need a list.

[There was an immediate pang of guilt inside of James—and as he didn't hide his emotions, being more of a heart-on-his-sleeve sort of bloke, he grimaced openly, whilst huffing the poor cigarette with all the care of the Hogwarts Express. It wicked down to ash and he coughed quite a bit before trying to hand the stub off with one lung coming out of his mouth. His eyes watered and his cheeks went bright red from the exertion of the escaping lung.

Inside, things were a touch more tranquil. He felt bad for reminding Sirius of what had to have been one of his lowest points. It was unintentional, he believed that, but it had also happened and had it not been stopped... James shuddered to think of the consequences. Through the veil of tears, he blinked out at his best mate, miserably. He wheezed.] Listen to me, Sirius, [cough] you're my best mate [cough]—you wouldn't—hurt Peter if he was here. You're [COUGH COUGH, he held up a hand a moment to indicate they ought pause briefly.]—not your family. Anyone who knows you [cough] knows that, alright?

[Sirius was still mad so for the first few hacks of James' cough he only took the cigarette and finished it off watching James out of the corner of his eye. He stamped the cigarette out, digging it into the dirt lest they set the barn, or the school, or God forbid Minerva, on fire.

He listened as James hacked. Bored, disinterested, but hanging on every word.] That's where you're wrong. I may not be my family, but he takes my real family away. Are you honestly telling me if he showed up here right now you'd be all trust and open arms?

[He looked at James incredulously for a moment, and completely horrified by the thought of it.]

[Sirius clapped his friend on the back, concern finally outweighing annoyance and flippancy] Don't choke to death in the barn, James, the neighbors will talk about what was going on in here.

[He mulled over what James said. It was logical. Of course it was. But Sirius couldn't think on that level when he was feeling the way he was. He saw the betrayal, the loss of his friends, and his life rotting behind bars with Dementors.] Well everyone already knows you're a better bloke than me, no one will be surprised that we disagree on this issue. But we shouldn't bother because the little fuck isn't actually here.

[James laughed with one half his set of lungs.] Yes, the first thing Hagrid will assume is James Potter choked on Sirius Black's massive cock.

[He sniffled again, willing the red from his cheeks. He wiped down his glasses with an offhanded spell.] Me trying to circumvent my own death with cunning isn't being much of a better bloke. He did this so he could pinch his mate's cheek—but, he withheld upon the realization that this couldn't be solved with such affection. Sirius wouldn't even look at him. James bent forward in a huff, his finger in the dirt and hay, sketching something useless and ill-defined, something out of habit. Sure, he had a temper, but he meant well and James loved him more than he loved anyone else, save for his parents. (And himself, according to Evans.)] If you've been chopping House Elf heads off and lining the corridor at home, Mum's going to have words with you. [There was a bit of a playful elbowing that subsided quickly.] You're not like them, you know. You went through hell to get here, didn't you? To get away from all that rubbish. How could you be like them after that, I ask you. Not to mention, according to Evans, I'm much worse than you. Even more arrogant, so that's something—an accomplishment, I'd say.

[James tended to worry in private moments. He shared them sometimes, but he wasn't prone to such behavior in the first place. He wasn't insecure, and he didn't often doubt himself. He knew how lucky that made him, and because of that, he tried, more often than not, to act as the rock of their small band of brothers. If that meant he was the one lending smiles and saying idiotic things to get a smile, he could live with it.

The eye contact gave him some hope. James smiled, a small crescent of a thing.] How did you do it?

[James' sulk was put-upon, but he didn't mind using that to his advantage if it meant Sirius cheered up a bit.] Supposedly, I was more killed for Harry than anything I did. There was a prophecy, you see. The boy wouldn't tell me what it said, really, but it must have been something to make the leader of the pureblood movement come to my house to kill my one-year-old son. D'you think it said, one day, James and Evans' son will be the most gorgeous person on this planet? Because I'm willing to put several Galleons down on that idea.

I don't know if we should keep asking questions we don't want to know the answers to.

That being said, [he was visibly loosening up, the focus having shifted made an instant difference.] I think the prophecy seems the most likely. I mean that's where I would put my money too.
