[As a result of Emily going Deathly, reality shifts for "Ed" Nashton. His hands go transparent and then the game controller that he was holding suddenly drops to the floor. If she's Death, then he's got to be dead. And if he's dead? Then he's a full on ghost. He does his best to communicate with his electronics:]

[She doesn't realize what he can and can't see, but she replies anyway. Softly.] It's a hallway. ...not the right one. [After a second to turn back and grab the address he'd put down for her and her journal, she hesitates on the threshold.] Okay. I'm... going to go through. [And softer, again mostly to herself.] ...wish me luck.

[And she steps through the door.]

Good...luck? [The lamp dims hesitantly because it occurs to him that he can't even touch a door, much less walk through one. And, if she's gone then he's...alone. As she walks through the door, the lamp turns off. The feeling of being alone, possibly being dead make him hit a low he's never hit before. His bright future is suddenly completely dark.

The door closes behind Muerte automatically.

And then suddenly he materializes in the air in the middle of the room. Alive and fleshy. A cartoonish pause and then he falls to the ground with an oof. "I'm alive!" He slaps his face with his hands and shouts happily. He thinks of Emily and then opens the door after her, poking his head through to look into the hotel hallway. Towards her:] Hey! I'm not dead!

[The door had shut immediately after she stepped through, stealing all the light that had been spilling from her dorm room and leaving the hallway even dimmer. She looked back at it for just a second, not knowing what to do - if she should try to open it again or move forward. She had an address, but that was all. She should have asked for a little more information. Was she supposed to walk out the front door of the hotel? Where was she, even? Still in Gotham?

She took a few more moments for her thoughts to tumble over one another and then took a deep breath. Eddie'd done this - or so he'd said. She could do it too.

She was partway down the hall when his head poked back out of the door, and she turned quickly to see him, her face relaxing into relief.] Oh thank god. [Hurrying her steps, she moved back toward where the light spilled through the door into the hallway.] You're okay...? [She sounded breathless with the question.]

[He was okay. Well, physically. Ed was still marveling at the fact that he had skin and flesh and bones and all the things that made people alive. Things that he hadn't worried about losing until they were gone and he was pretty sure he'd never get them back.] I don't know what's going on. [He said and his voice shook. His whole body was shaking and he could barely close the door behind him with his fingers twitching on the doornob.

Ed tried to play it cool for her, looking up with big brown eyes behind nerdy glasses. And, he failed miserably. She could see the fear, the relief, the confusion about all of this. Without thinking, he reached out for her. Hands clinging to her shirt to pull her close for a desperate hug. He needed to be touched after going without it for an entire day.]

I don't either. [It came out as a whisper, and the next words were even softer.] I think it's me... [She didn't want to admit it, but it had to be true...

She was already stepping closer when he reached out for her, and though they hadn't known each other for very long (though she was starting to wonder about that), she closed the distance easily and wrapped her arms around him. It felt right to do, to make herself feel calmer, to try to chase away that fear and confusion she saw in Eddie's eyes. She wanted to make it better, and so her arms tightened around him and she pressed her face to his shoulder, breathing steady.]

If it's you, then how come I'm the only one that got ghosted? [Ed asked quietly. He didn't really believe he was the only person who was close to Emily that wasn't her weirdo brother. He thought she was so cool and neat girls like her had a lot more admirers than just one geeky genius. What made him so special? What did he do?

He held her tightly, chin against the side of her head and nose buried in black hair. He turned to kiss the side of her face automatically, like it was something he always did even if he was sure he had never embraced her with this kind of desperation before. (Or, had he?)] Thanks. [He breathed out, shakily ashamed that he needed to be held. Held by her.] I uhm. I- can you tell me what happened with that kid that drank that goofy juice?

I don't know. [Her confusion held a thread of desperation wound through it. She felt like if she knew the answer to that, she'd know the answer to so many other things.] Because I like you? [It seemed such a simple answer, but what if it was right?

Being held (and holding on in return) helped. He felt right - he smelled right - and it pulled some of the worry and tension from her shoulders (but not the strength from her arms - those still held him tightly). She blushed immediately at the press of that kiss, but she turned too, catching him at the angle of his jaw with a press of her own lips, lingering there as she breathed in, clinging to him as much as he clung to her. Especially at his question. The one that made her shoulders jolt a little in surprise and then hesitate on giving an answer. And she started pulling back, so self-conscious, as she gave it.] I killed him... [She didn't look up, couldn't meet Eddie's eyes.]

[He tried to tease:] Like, or like-like? [Having a crush on someone wasn't enough to ghost them, was it?

Ed leaned back, but still held onto her. One hand moving to gently play with her hair while the other wrapped around her middle. The side of his face still a little warm where she kissed him. His heart beat harder and Ed felt alive. The way she made him feel, the way she fit in his arms? That, to his mild surprise, felt natural too. As if she belonged with him. Whatever connection they had in another life? It wasn't just a casual thing. He was starting to realize that now.] You didn't kill him. [He said steadily. Completely unwilling to believe that she was capable of that, even if she might have temporarily killed him.] That stuff smelled like the kind of chemicals they dump on the bad side of town. Like Slaughter Swamp.

[The tease made her flush darkly, pink from her cheekbones down her neck.] Shut up... [It wasn't mean though, an embarrassed sort of command that had no heat behind it. It made the answer obvious enough. And she knew it was too fast. Lack of experience in having friends and dating aside, she knew that it was too fast. Too much. Caught up in some unexpected hormone-driven feelings, maybe.

Even when she started to pull back, he kept his arms around her, and she was grateful for it. And grateful for his hand playing with her hair, the light sensation of it making a shiver run down from her scalp over the back of her neck. She closed her eyes at the feel of it, and wanted suddenly, without question, to kiss him. More than just a press to his jaw, and she didn't know where exactly that desire was born. Eyes still closed, she tipped forward to rest her forehead on his shoulder, and started her quiet confession.] I could hear him laughing, and he wasn't going to stop. It was... It hurt. Him. So I went over and I told him it would be okay and touched his face and held his hand and then there was this sound, and he was gone. [She paused, even softer:] He was gone. And then you were a ghost, and...

[He laughed softly and gave her a look like he was feeling something similar. And, yes this was all happening too fast. The feelings he had for her carried a weight that he had never felt before. He cared about her when it was really difficult to care about a lot of people at Gotham U.

As she rested her forehead on his chest, he held her closer. Ed thought about the kid who stupidly drank that green stuff. A kid who was really dead and not stuck in this spectral loop he was in. It made him weirdly grateful, even if the cause of his problems was pressed up against him.] It sounds like you helped.

[The laugh could have been sharp, could have bruised the little bit of pride she had that was already faltering because of being so new at all of this. And she'd heard the way Eddie's laugh could be like a knife even without him really meaning it. But this one was soft, and it came with a look that made her want to kiss him even more. And she almost did - a lean forward like a momentary loss in her balance, a glance down at his smile, but she steadied herself at the last moment, looking away.

As for helping?] That's what I wanted. I felt like... [She trailed off and looked for the right words. But they were hard to find. She felt like... like it was right. Like she was meant to be there. Like it was the the right place and the right time and the right boy and the right way. It felt natural - as natural as standing close to Eddie and wrapping her arms around him. Just in a very different way.]

[He leaned in, too, angling his body towards her for a kiss that simply never arrived. He blinked as she turned away at the last second, but he didn't fault her for it. Kissing was a weird thing to do right after he had been killed, turned into a ghost and then brought back to life. And, maybe it wasn't appropriate with the current conversation. Still, he couldn't help but feel a lingering want for it.

Ed let the sentence trail off and he hugged her a little tighter, liking the simple sensation of warmth and pressure against him. He liked the way she smelled, the sound of her voice when she was in his arms.] Maybe helping him is what you're supposed to do. [He leaned back and gently tilted up her chin with his thumb and finger. Then, quietly:] Maybe I'm screwing that up for you.

[She was surprised when he leaned in too, almost meeting her half-way. And she held there with wide eyes, staring at him with her thoughts visibly rushing through her mind. Too much was happening and she wanted something normal - something any college freshman would want. And maybe she wouldn't actually describe Eddie as "normal". Maybe she wouldn't describe the seemingly-sudden magnetic pull between them to be "normal". But they were both barely adults and weird stuff was going on and she just... it was easier to ignore that and lean in to kiss him. She didn't remember having done it ever before (didn't remember kissing anyone ever before), but it felt right once she was doing it, closing her eyes and leaning against him.

She liked his arms around her, liked the solidity of them especially after him being incorporeal. Being a ghost. The thought of that made her shiver and lean more against him.] Maybe I am. But it didn't feel like helping when it happened. [She allowed her chin to be tipped up, sighing softly at his fingers against her skin. Softly:] No. I won't believe that.
