Her headaches had been growing worse by the day. Dharma had been nearly drowning herself in Ibuprofen and water to keep them at bay. She had students to advise and students to teach. Her dreams had been getting stranger and stranger by the night, too. Things she didn't understand. Usually, if she looked at her dreams closely, they related to what she'd been doing that day. These? These didn't make sense. Faces she didn't recognize, places she'd never been, and things... things that caused her to sit up in terror in the middle of the night, sweating and screaming into a pillow. It wasn't very conducive to her normal level of productivity.
That day, she sat in her office, staring at the same essay she'd been trying to grade for the past two hours. The words swam in front of her eyes and reformed themselves into... what? Warnings? Was that even English? By the gods, maybe she should have called out today? Looking up, she clicked over to her calendar and realized that she had Preston Basileus next up and then freedom for the rest of the afternoon. She could make it through one more student. This kid wasn't as bad as some of them and he was doing relatively well in class. Usually, their appointments went in and out.
Moving the not-getting-graded-today paper off of her desk, she pulled up Preston's file and tried to focus on his body of work. She had to at least be in a good mental place so she could tell him things that made sense. Except nothing made sense at all to her. Reports she'd looked at a thousand times were lost and she sighed. She'd faked her way through meetings before. She could fake her way through this one, too.
