Ben always knew time was precious. Living with HIV taught him as much. He knew all too well the unpredictability of his disease and how quickly it could turn against him. But he took for granted that it was his time that was precious. Disease or not, there were no guarantees that he would die first. A car accident, heart attack, even a bomb caused by crazy fundamentalists could kill them before the HIV. Tonight was proof of that. Holding Michael’s hand, Ben realized it was their time that was precious. He vowed never to take that for granted again. |

The first time Brian visited Justin in New York was exactly six days after he’d left.
Justin found him waiting outside the apartment and grinned as he was engulfed in a billowing coat and the familiar smell of Brian’s cologne.
Brian swept him off to the Four Seasons amid grand proclamations of Madison and Fifth Avenue, Armani, Prada and Gucci shopping adventures ahead.
When he checked out two days later it was the first time they’d left the room.
The second time Brian visited Justin in New York was 36 days later. They didn’t leave the room that time either. |

Justin knew he was ready. It was going to be his first time but he knew he could go through with it. He was prepared. He didn’t expect it to go quite like it did though. At first, he wasn’t sure where to go but he found some place special. When it was over, the loft was a mess. Brian couldn’t believe it. Justin was surprised at the way Brian reacted, as if he didn’t remember he was there. Turns out that the first time Justin made Jambalaya wasn’t a great success, but it was much better the second day. |

The first time Brian said it, surrounded by chaos and confusion after Babylon was bombed, wasn't the first time Justin had heard it.
He'd heard it when Brian said, "Like the first time?" and when he rubbed his hand, holding him through endless nightmares.
He'd heard it when Brian demanded that he stand up for himself and in the way he looked at him when he did.
He'd heard it when Brian praised his art; encouraged him to stay in school or work on Rage.
Brian hadn't said it aloud before, but Justin heard it every time. |

My friend and total QaF soulmate, brianslave68 made it and some other beautiful icons for me to use on my drabbles. I am SO EXCITED about them...they're gorgeous!

The first time someone spit on Emmett, he was 13. He was walking home from school, alone as usual, when three boys rode by on their ten-speeds. Emmett covered his face after the first kid passed, but he'd already taken a direct hit to the side of his face.
As the boys dashed off, laughing and hurling insults, a mortified Emmett wiped a mixture of spittle and tears from his face. Instead of going home, he ran to Aunt Lula's. The pain in his eyes said everything he couldn't. She gathered him to her as he sobbed in frustration. |

It took a while, but Brian could eventually admit, to himself anyway, that it was his own fault. He had offered the boy a choice that first night, and the twat had been too naive to understand or, more likely, too stubborn to accept that it had been rhetorical.

How could he know that the kid would be the first trick ever to choose option C?
It was even longer before Brian could admit how grateful, how fucking grateful, he was that Justin had. |

The first time Brian introduced him as his partner, Justin acted as though it happened every day. He did nothing to betray his surprise and delight, and eventually he did get used to hearing it.
The first time Brian introduced him as his husband, his tongue was firmly in his cheek as he let a conservative potential client know exactly who he was dealing with. But Justin didn’t even pretend to act as though it didn’t matter. He squeezed Brian’s hand and received a slight smile in acknowledgment. The sound of bags hitting the floor and the annoyed muttering from his partner didn’t faze him much. Brian hated DC, and he’d been there for a week this time.
When the expected stomping across the floor towards the bedroom didn’t occur, Justin turned his head to glance in Brian’s direction.
It seemed like he hadn’t moved from the spot where he dropped his carry on bag on the floor. Instead, he just stood there.

“Brian, I think this is the first time that you’ve truly left me speechless,” he laughed.
“Yeah, well, if you want an I ♥ Obama shirt, you can get it yourself, because there’s no way I’m skulking all over town to put up posters this time around.” |
