“And they lived happily ever after,” Melanie closed the book.
Lindsay kissed Gus, “Time to sleep, honey. First grade is important, and you‘ve been so tired lately.”
Gus smiled beatifically, “Night.”
As soon as the door shut, he flipped the light back on and reached under his bed.
The household was awakened later to shouts of “Die, you motherfucker! Suck on this!”
Lindsay found Gus sleepwalking, “Rage” clutched in his hand.
The next morning, Melanie handed Gus the phone. “Your Dad and I have talked; he wants a word with you.”
She hid her grin as his eyes grew round. |

“So… we’re still right on track with our plans to spend Christmas with Justin and the … and Brian at the mansion, right?” She asked.
“I thought maybe we could stay with Debbie and Carl…,” Lindsay answered somewhat hesitantly.
“Don’t be silly! How would four more people fit into their tiny house?”
Silence.
“Linds, what’s your problem? Hey…”
“It’s only… when we stay at Britin I always realize how far from home we are here.”

“We’re having latkes tonight for dinner,” Jenny whispered excitedly to Gus. “Mama’s in the kitchen making lots and lots of them.”
“I like mine best with maple syrup,” Gus answered happily and his stomach started to grumble as he rubbed it in anticipation of the delicious treat.
Today at sunset Hanukkah would begin and right after dark they’d light their first candle.
And later, he’d talk with his dads on the phone. He grinned happily in anticipation.
Gus thought it was pretty cool that they got to celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas. It always made him feel different and special.

“Well, he didn’t read him a bedtime story!” Deb let out a raucous laugh before sobering. “Vic called me tout suite. He would never have turned Brian away, but a fag with an underage, runaway boy staying with him in those days was just asking to be branded a pedophile.”
“Jesus.” Justin thought he’d had it bad.
“They took the next bus back. I called Joan and covered for Brian, who was devastated when he realized how he’d endangered Vic.” |

“Right here, Sonny-boy.” He answered, sitting down next to Justin.
“Justin too?” The boy asked.
“Hey, Gus.” Justin called out, “Is your Christmas list ready?” He took Brian’s hand and absently played with his fingers.
“Nope.” Gus said happily. “I’ve got a Make a Wish List instead.”
“What’s that?” Justin asked curiously.
“Instead of asking for toys, I wish for good things to happen to the people I love.”
“What the fuck?” Brian mouthed to Justin, who just shrugged.
Gus giggled. “So this time I wished you married.” |
