Two steps forward, one step back. It's like a fucking dance. Every time I start getting somewhere with Brian, every time I find a way around one of his defensive barriers, he shoves me back so I have to find my footing again. I don't need my own missteps to make things even worse—and fuck, did I misstep this time. I want him to treat me like adult, and I invited him to my prom. What a major fucking misstep.
Daphne laughs in my ear, "You're a better dancer since you came out." Then, "Look, he came after all."

After Ben left I re-read the inscription. No one had ever called me a super-hero and I hugged his words to me. I hadn’t felt like one when I’d chickened out of talking to his class, my lack of self belief over-taking my desire to impress Ben. But with just a few words, he’d let me know he had confidence in me. He was a college professor and he was interested in me! I couldn’t quite believe it.
I knew why these thoughts filled my head. So I didn’t have to think about what else he’d said.

The night air was cool as we walked through the park. I wanted to take his hand but felt shy for some reason. I listened to his words as he spoke about his life, how he focused on the ‘now’. I was part of that ‘now’ and it felt so right.
When I kissed him his mouth tasted sweet and I didn’t want the kiss to end. I knew I had a silly grin on my face afterwards, I just couldn’t help it. I wanted him and he wanted me. I knew that. Nothing was going to come between us. |

I knew I had made the biggest mistake of my life, all I could think of was how could I make it right. Would he want me to or had the hurt cut him too deep to be ever resolved. Words from others mixed with his filled my head, each fighting to be heard. I knew which ones I believed in. I would fight to get him back. |

“I swear, Daph, I’ll be at school in the morning,” he hissed, climbing out of the car.
“Yeah right,” she replied, rolling down his window as he closed the passenger side door, “What if something happens? What if some guy drugs you? Or takes you home and tries to fulfill some weird sexual fantasy with you?”
Justin rolled his eyes. “You sound like a public service announcement.”
She stared at him for a moment. “Fine, I’ll cover for you, but just this once.”
As she pulled away from the curb he headed further down Liberty Avenue and toward his fate.

I held him close. This is where I belonged. We walked to his bed, kissing, touching; not wanting to lose contact. I knelt in front of him, his beautiful body about to become mine.
His words broke into my thoughts and I responded, reassuring him before lying down, his strong but gentle arms enveloping me.
He lifted my legs onto his shoulders. I heard myself gasp at the incredible rush of pleasure I felt when he entered me.
We made love slowly, relishing every moment of the first time. Afterwards I fell asleep in his arms. In love and loved. |
