Brian and Justin stood on one side of her bed. Michael and Ben on the other, her white hair flowing over the pillow. The machines’ beeping the only indicator that she was still there. Hunter kissed his wife at the doorway and stood next to Ben. Lindsay waved to Brian and Gus walked in slowly, wiping a tear and taking Brian’s hand. Emmett and Ted joined their vigil a few moments later. None of them spoke, what was there to say? Debbie opened her eyes and tried to smile. “My boys.” Then she closed them again for the last time. |

“Yeah! Put out the trash and sweep behind the counter!”
“Are you sure you don’t want me to wash the floors and clean the walls while I’m at it?”
“Watch your mouth young man…and now you mention it….yes you can!”
He turned as the door opened and his fathers walked in.
“What you doing tomorrow?” he asked them
“Why?”
“I want to go back to school!”

Pushing aside the covers, Deb went to investigate the noises coming from the kitchen. Sadly, she was pretty sure what she would find.
Startled, he dropped the icepack he was filling. “I didn’t want to wake you.”
“Shhh. We had a deal. I’m glad you came.” Wordlessly, she wiped away the blood and tears. Internally she was fuming. But they had a deal.
“You keep that icepack on your eye, honey, and get some rest,” she said as she settled him on the couch.
“Thanks, Deb.”
Placing a gentle kiss on his forehead, she smiled into his sad hazel eyes. |
