What Is This Feeling?
Who: Lucy and James
What: Mr. Nash said he would be the flowers himself.
Where: Lucy's place of employment!
When: Friday Afternoon
Notes: Poor kids don't understand these ~feelings~

The nightmares Alex had told James about worried him. To be fare, it was often that he worried about his youngest sister, he had done so all of his life and it seemed like a hard habit to break. But the fear and caution in her eyes as she told him all of the horrible things that had been going on clenched at his heart and made him feel almost... helpless. James didn't appreciate feeling helpless.

So after getting settled he realized that he felt impatient. Impatience due to wanting to do something for his sister and for once not having a clue what he could do. He had passed by a little flower shop during one of his random meanderings of the area and thought maybe some flowers for his youngest sister would perk her up. Just a little thing to make her smile and, even if it was temporary, forget about the dreams that seemed to be haunting her.

Emerging from his car, James straightened the collar of his shirt and ran a hand through his short curls. With a straight back and his head held high he strolled down the sidewalk before slipping into the flower shop. It appeared empty, no one at the counter, just himself and the flowers. Looking around he realized he didn't know what to do. Any time he tried to put a show for a girl he bought whatever flowers weren't dead at the local grocery store. He never tried very hard with girls, what was the point? He had just been using them to enforce his non existent heterosexuality and grocery store flowers, wedged into the back of a cramped fridge, seemed to do the job. But his sister deserved better than that and he realized, as he looked at little white poof ball flowers and others that he recognized as roses, he hadn't a clue of how to get a bouquet.

Coming to the counter he hit his hand on the waiting bell and let out a sigh. He didn't like to admit a lack of knowledge over something, or be kept waiting, so he chose to call out with an ounce of annoyance clear in his voice. "Does anyone work here? Hello?"

Lucy had decided to be a Responsible Adult today. It would make her mother happy, it would make her father grin, and it would make her aunt very happy. Her aunt kept her around, odd work schedule and all, because Lucy had a knack for flowers. They seemed to respond to her, for whatever reason. Lucy didn't particularly understand what her aunt meant by that, but knew it was something good, so she rolled with it. Really, she should pick up this working thing more often, seeing how happy it made everyone. She never would, but it was a nice idea.

It was a slow day at the shop, so she was spending time in the back with her ipod putting together orders. There was a funeral later that day, so she was putting the finishing touches on the baskets that had been ordered. This person must have been popular, as there were a lot of baskets. She tried her best to make them look somewhat cheery. Funerals were such sad events that it just wouldn't do to send them sad flowers.

She was in the middle of trying to perk up a somewhat limp daisy when she heard the bell and a rather annoyed voice following the ding. Woops.

"Coming!" she called, pulling the earbuds out and setting them aside. She brushed past the beaded curtain that separated the front from the back.

She was fully prepared to launch into the greeting her aunt had forced her to memorize but her mind went blank when she saw the customer. She apparently forgot her manners as well, because she couldn't help staring. The required smile was absent, in its stead was a curious, if not somewhat confused, expression. She was overwhelmed with an odd sense of recognition and a painful sense of longing. It was as if she knew this person well and had not seen them in ages. She tried to recall ever meeting him before, but she knew she hadn't. She would remember that face.

"Hi," she finally said, still stuck by the doorway. Customer service could wait just a little while. She had to process this first.

James was ready to glare at the person coming out from the back, ready to complain about waiting forever, ready to... but then this little blonde girl, no, woman appeared and he found himself at a loss for words.

"Hi," he replied faintly then blinked and tried to understand what had just happened. The woman looked like someone he knew. Someone he couldn't quite place a finger on but he knew the recognition made him feel... happy. And some other feelings that he had never really associated with a woman before. Men, sure, but not with women.

"Uh," James leaned from foot to foot and looked around the shop. "I need to get some flowers... for my sister." Whatever prompted him to insist that the flowers were for a relative and not just some girl James didn't know. He looked back to the woman and seeing here there brought a smile to his face. "I'm guessing you'll be able to help me figure out what would be right for her?"

Right. Flowers, that's what they sold here. That's what her job was, to sell flowers. Not to stare at this extremely attractive man. Stop staring Lucy. She forced herself to blink and gave her head a small shake, trying to refocus herself. Then he had to go and smile, and it made her insides melt. What was wrong with her? She had to get back on track. The best way to go about that was to look somewhere else. That somewhere else ended up being her flip flopped, purple toe nailed feet. She wiggled her toes. Unfortunately that did not make them as interesting as the man in front of her.

"I..I suppose I can do that, yes. That is my job." She stole a quick peek at him, hoping that now that she'd managed to look away he wouldn't be so captivating. She was wrong. "Um...what are the flowers for?" She was ridiculously pleased with the fact that they were for his sister. She couldn't begin to imagine the disappointment she would have felt if he had said girlfriend or wife. Not that those weren't still possibilities. Extremely upsetting possibilities.

His smile grew and he bowed his head for a moment, catching that look she had. He wasn't oblivious to that look. He'd seen it plenty of times before from the women in his following during High School and college. But for this girl to give him that look actually... meant something. It made him feel happy and almost, possibly, shy.

"Just to perk her up, she's been having a rough couple of weeks," James replied smoothly. Almost shy. Definitely not all the way. "I don't typically do stuff like this so I think it'll surprise her. Hopefully make her happy."

He gave a nod and rubbed his lips together, looking around awkwardly as he tried to think of what else could be said. "So, you sure you can help me? You seemed a little unsure." He smiled again, trying to imply that he was only joking and wasn't in any way mad at her despite the earlier annoyance in his voice.

That smile was devastating. She wanted him to keep smiling and never stop. His smile felt like every wonderful thing in life was combined and radiating it. She was rather surprised she wasn't in a puddle on the floor right now. Who was this guy?

"I'm sorry about your sister," she said quietly, and she meant it. She didn't know why, but she felt awful for him and wanted to make it better. She also felt rather impressed that he was so caring towards his sister. It was sweet of him to want to cheer her up with flowers.

"I'm sure flowers will make her happy, because you were thinking about her. Flowers always make me happy. And of course I can help you. At least, I think I can anyways. Does she have a favorite flower? That's a good place to start."

"Uh..." The smile dimmed slightly and James made a motion of uncertainty. "I don't really know what type of flowers she likes. When she was little we used to get her flowers for concert performances but I'm pretty sure they were just generic bouquets. Grabbed them from the grocery store or whatever."

James made a small laugh, maybe his tendency to just grab flowers from a grocery store was some what of a family trait. He gave a casual scratch at his short cropped curls before bringing his hand to his jaw and stroking it gently as his gray eyes took in the flowers around him. "What about some bright colors. You know? I want to brighten her mood so... bright colors would work for that, right?"

He looked back at the woman and a corner of his mouth curled into a smile. He liked her, even if she seemed a little flustered, it made her... cute.

His uncertainty made her all the more determined to help him. Uncertainty did not fit him. She was not sure why she thought that, or where that thought had come from, but she firmly believed it.

No favorite flower and bright colors had her instantly thinking of her own favorite. She went towards one of the coolers and gestured to a display of vibrantly colored Gerbera daisies. The large, many colored blooms were so happy looking. They were her instant go to for any occasion. She opened the cooler and pulled an orange, pink and purple daisy from it and took them to him.

"These are my favorite. I don't think you'll find happier flowers than these. They're big and cheerful and they come in almost any color you can think of."

She paused and frowned slightly. "I should have asked what her favorite color was first. I'm suppose to try and sell you a vase, too. I won't, though. I don't like telling people where they should put their flowers. That's a personal choice. Just don't tell my aunt." Lucy really wasn't the greatest business person. She would quite happily talk someone out of buying something if she thought it was silly or give away a flower to someone she thought looked like they needed one.

"I promise I won't tell your aunt," James replied truthfully. The more and more he was by this woman, the more she spoke, the more he found her to be cute. And that in itself confused James because he didn't find women 'cute'. He appreciated the curves of their bodies of course. He could get it up for them and really give a good show that he was completely straight. But really, it was all an act. There wasn't any real feeling behind any of it and he never had a crush on a girl, never found them to be cute nor felt an urge to touch them. He had experienced those feelings towards many men but never a woman.

This girl was different.

"Listen, I'll get a vase because I don't even know if my sister has one. These flowers are pretty bright... do you have any others we could throw into the bouquet? Or should it just be a bouquet of these?" He paused and turned his body towards the woman, studying her with a near serious expression for a moment before he loosened up.

"I'm James," he suddenly said, offering his hand to her and another one of his smiles. James knew his confident smile, the forced grin that he gave to people as they trailed after him in all of his glory, but the smiles he gave this woman were gentle and sweet. They were natural and an expression he only reserved for his closest of friends. "What's your name?"

She shook her head when he mentioned buying a vase. "Oh don't do that. These look much better in one of these." She went behind the counter and pulled an old mason jar off the bottom shelf. "My aunt doesn't sell these, but I keep them here to use for myself. You just put a ribbon around the jar and some glass stones in the bottom and it looks so much nicer than a vase. At least with these. And if you want other flowers, perhaps lilies or carnations? Roses look nice, too, but it all depends on the colors you choose."

While the conversation had been on flowers, it had been easy to keep her gaze elsewhere. Now he offered a name, a smile and a hand, and all of her focus was back on him. She tested his name silently. James fit, but it felt...off. It was almost as if she had expectations, as though she knew what his name was suppose to be. James wasn't it. She wasn't sure what she had been expecting, or why she had been expecting anything at all, so she brushed that notion aside. James was perfect.

"I'm Lucy." She returned his smile and placed her hand in his, completely caught off guard by how natural and right this felt. Their hands fit together and that thrum of recognition that had been quietly humming since she'd first laid eyes on him began to scream to make itself heard. She blinked, searching his features for signs of a misplaced memory or forgotten friendship. She'd met so many people over the years, perhaps he had been one of them. There was no way she would forget that face though.

"Have you....been in here before?" Maybe that was it. Maybe she had helped him before, and that's why this all felt so familiar.

James grasped the mason jar and turned it in his hands, glancing at the girl through his eyelashes and a smirk forming on his mouth. "Lucy, like the Peanuts character?" He gently placed the jar back onto the counter and waved a hand towards it before crossing his arms over his chest.

"I'll take the jar and the bright flowers you just showed me. I think some white lilies with it would be nice. Right? Break up the color a little." He smiled at the feel of her hand and the near spark it made. He leaned closer to Lucy and took her in. He was being a complete flirt and obviously checking her out but he felt that this was only right. Which was weird; all of this was weird. But still it felt right.

"I've never been here. Just moved back to California a few weeks ago. I've been out of the state for years. But... I don't know, do you live around here? I feel like I've seen you before." His voice came out silky smooth and his smile was flirtatious. He didn't know what had come over him. A female? Really? But she was just so cute and he felt like he knew her, knew every inch of her, and had known her for years.

She smirked as well. "Like Lucy Ricardo, actually. My mom is a big fan of the show. And Lucille is a perfectly respectable name, or something. It's one of those country club names that the old people smile and nod about." She was always called Lucille at those gatherings. She was not a fan of it. She played along though, as it was part of the game.

She, very reluctantly, withdrew her hand from his. She instantly missed the warmth of it and itched for any excuse to touch him again. Lucy had always been a touchy feely person. Hugs and caresses had been part of her language since she was a small child, but this was different. She had work to do though, and it would be rather hard to put together a bouquet one handed. It would be sloppy and lazily put together if she tried that, and that would not do for this bouquet.

She, once more reluctantly, left the counter to fetch the necessary flowers. She chose an array of bright pink and green and orange daisies, then went to another cooler and grabbed a selection of small, white calla lilies.

She would normally put the bouquet together in the back, where the work station was, but that was far too far away. She went back to the counter and set about putting together a quick example bouquet. It was sort of sloppy, but it would give him an idea of what he'd be getting.

"Just got back? From where? I've lived in this area all of my life. My family has a long history here, so it's the thing to do, I guess."

She glanced up from her work and was hit with a smile. It made her blush. As pale as she was now, a blush covered her entire face vividly. It embarrassed her, which only made her blush more. It was a vicious cycle.

"I feel the same way," she murmured softly, eyes doggedly and determinedly on the flowers in hopes of cooling the heat in her cheeks.

"There," she said after a final flower placement. "Is this what you want?"

"I've been living all over the place for the past couple of years after I graduated from college in Florida," James replied and picked at the corner of the counter with his nail while Lucy prepared the bouquet. "Just kind of wandering around until recently. Moved back here, living in a complex close to my sister, trying to settle down and all that."

He kicked out a foot and leaned against the counter, turning his gaze completely to Lucy again. Her blush made him happy, made him want to brush a hand over her cheek and gently tease her. With a shake of his head he wondered what had gotten into him. He hadn't even climbed out of his closet yet. He was still very much tucked away, happy to be secretly gay, but this undeniable attraction to this girl had him confused.

"Where are you from? If you don't mind me asking. I'm assuming you live around here." With a slow slip of his eyes to the bouquet he quickly made eye contact with Lucy again. "The bouquet is perfect. Thank you."

"It must be fun to move around like that and see lots of places. I've never lived outside of Newport, but I traveled with my dad when I was younger and it was so much fun. That might be a bit different than moving a lot though."

Now that he was satisfied with her test run, she went around the counter and back into the back, returning with a bag full of soft blue glass stones and some ribbon. She poured those into the bottom of the jar and set to work prettying the jar.

"I do live around here. I've got an apartment in a complex down on the beach. I haven't been there very long, but it seems nice so far. The elevator needs some serious attention though. I got stuck in it last month. I had nice company, though, so I guess it wasn't all bad."

Now that the jar was ribboned and rock filled, she set about arranging the flowers in it in a more precise and careful manner.

"Really?" James said with a laugh. "I live on the beach as well and our elevator is crappy but I haven't gotten stuck in it yet." He slid down the counter and walked as closely as he could to be by her. Leaning on the counter he kept his eyes on Lucy all the while with the same grin on his face.

"You have quite a hand with flower arranging. Well, from what I can tell. It looks really nice." Typically he'd flirt relentlessly with girls, even if it wasn't completely supported by any true feelings, but everything he said to Lucy was genuine and true. He felt the need to compliment her and bring that blush back to her cheeks. "I'll have to come back here if I ever get more flowers," He commented absentmindedly, his gray eyes still on Lucy as she handled the flowers.

"How funny that there are two places on the beach that have crappy elevators. What's the name of your building? I'll have to make sure not to look for an apartment there if I ever decide to move again. I do not want to repeat the experience with the elevator."

She grinned and, of course, blushed. Rats. "Well, I'm no professional, but I'm pretty sure I'm a little better than the people at the grocery store florist."

She looked up from her flowers when he mentioned returning. Really, it hadn't crossed her mind that he would be leaving. It seemed so right to have him there. "I hope you do," she said softly, the corners of her lips curved into the faintest of smiles. It was risky, allowing herself to give him her full attention. She wanted to touch him when she did. She wanted to brush her finger tips over his knuckles, slip her fingers between his once more, touch his cheek, his hair, wrap her arms around him. All of that would be completely out of the question, of course. She just met him, despite that weird deja vu feeling she had.

"Pax Letale," James replied as he leaned away from the counter and tipped his head to one side. "I've only been there for a little while. The people seem nice enough but the building is kind of weird. But it makes me closer to my sister so that works. I've been wandering around for so long it's about time I pick up big brother duty."

He ran a finger over the edge of the mason jar and grinned again. "This looks every bit professional to me. But maybe I'm not that good of a judge since I don't even know what the real name of these daisy flowers is." He let out a laugh at his own lack of knowledge and near draped himself over the counter again. "So where is it that you live, Lucy?"

Lucy about dropped the flowers she was trying so carefully to arrange in the jar. She set them aside, mouth agape. "That's where I live!" This was the most exciting and terrifying news at the same time. On the one hand, he was close. That pleased her. At the same time, he was close. That was dangerous. It would be so easy for him to catch a glimpse of how she really looked, how horrible her reflection was without artfully applied make up and a wig to cover the patchy hair that was trying desperately to grow on her scalp. The wisps of regrowth were almost worse than the baldness.

"Does your sister live there, too? Maybe I know her." She probably didn't, Lucy didn't know many of the women there, but there was a small chance. Maybe they'd be two for two. After all, what were the odds of them both living in the same building in an area like this?

Back to daisies. She couldn't feasibly keep him there all day, he wanted to go see his sister. She couldn't be selfish. But really, would it be selfish? His sister had had all of her or his life to talk to him. Lucy had just found him. It seemed more selfish on his sisters part in her opinion. She should share.

"These are Gerbera daisies. And the white ones are Calla lilies. They aren't the fanciest flowers, but I think they're better than the fancy ones. I hope she likes them too." She put the finishing touches on the jar and set the flowers in it in careful disarray. "There. I think that should do it."

"Really?" James was honestly surprised and then... satisfied. This would make things a lot easier. But that caused him pause, why would he want things to be easy with her? He wasn't even attracted to women... well... that's what he thought but this woman was making him incredibly confused. Often times he would see a man and find him attractive, picture being with them and wonder what they felt like against his naked skin. But for Lucy, and this nearly brought a blush to his face, he felt like he already knew the answers to those questions and he was eager to relive it all.

Awkwardly he stepped back but then suddenly felt ashamed of the movement. He wasn't about to just let her disappear and he wasn't going to leave here and forget her. "I live in 508, my sister Alex lives on the fifth floor as well. Do you know her? She's a tiny thing." He grinned, forever happy to speak of his sister who he had probably the biggest heart for aside from himself.

He reached for the jar of flowers and held it in his hands, inspecting Lucy's handiwork and giving her a nod. Placing the jar back on the counter he reached for his wallet and handed Lucy his credit card. "They look great."

"That's totally crazy that we're neighbors!" It was also crazy, dizzying, awesome and nerve wracking as well. The pit of her stomach couldn't decide whether it was going to flutter with butterflies or drop out entirely and leave her feeling sick.

"Alex as in Alexandria? Cause if that's her, that's totally who I got stuck in the elevator with. Unless there is more than one of them in the building." This situation was turning out to be a series of coincidences. She preferred that over a series of unfortunate events, but she couldn't help but be a little freaked out by the whole thing.

She saw him withdraw a bit and wondered if perhaps he was feeling as overwhelmed and confused by all of this as she was. She also wondered if he was feeling the regret she was, now that they were coming to the end of their exchange. She doubted he'd hang around long once he had his flowers.

She took his card and rang it up, stealing a peek at his last name. James Nash. She would keep that name on file, because she had a feeling that her thoughts would be wandering back to him for quite some time once they parted ways.

"Really? Wonderful, now she's getting trapped in elevators," James replied with his voice trailing off. Overprotective? Yes. He had always been a little overprotective of his youngest sister and since moving to the apartment complex and hearing of her complaints about the area he was growing more and more of the opinion that she should move to somewhere safer. But... she was an adult and all that so James couldn't just pick her up and carry her away from danger as he would have while they were children.

Turning his attention back to Lucy his face brightened and he smiled again. "Well I'm glad you've met her and I'm glad we're neighbors. You know, if you ever need anything... or would simply like to visit... you're more than welcome to stop by." He retrieved his card and slipped it back into his wallet then grabbed the flowers. "I'm serious. I'd be happy to have the company." He smiled softly at Lucy then took a step back. "Well, I should be going. It's been nice meeting you, Lucy."

"It wasn't her fault," she said quickly. "And she handled it really well. She tried to figure out how to get us out of there. I was glad she was there. You should be proud of her." For more than one reason, but there was no need to get into that. Then she frowned slightly. What if Alex told him her secret? They were apparently close siblings, so it was a possibility perhaps. The idea made her absolutely sick. She didn't want him to know that she was broken and ill.

The idea of being able to simply walk down a few flights of stairs to see him made the fact that he was leaving a little more bearable. Just a little.

"It was nice to meet you, too. If you ever need any more flowers or anything, you can find me in 1005. You're more than welcome to stop by."

James turned a cool eye to Lucy and listened to what she had to say about his sister. He gave a short nod and his expression softened. "I believe you. She can be wonderful in strange situations. I just... I worry about her. Maybe a little too much for her own good or mine. Believe me when I say I am more proud of her than anything I can think of." And this was the honest truth, which surprised James somewhat. He didn't readily give up the truth to people. He typically kept complete honesty to himself, if people knew too much then they could use it against him. Better to build himself up to look like something wonderful and unstoppable than to let them know his true self. But... Lucy seemed to be capable of having this information. He trusted her with it.

"I think I may stop by one day," James continued with another smile. He reached out his hand to Lucy, wanting to shake it, if only as an excuse to briefly touch her.

She nodded. Alex had told her that her family worried about her a great deal. She could definitely believe him when he said he worried about her a little too much for either of their sakes. She wanted to tell him that he really didn't have to, because she knew how suffocating it could be and because she felt this need to reassure him. "It's sweet of you to look out for her like you do."

She placed her hand in his and gave it a gentle squeeze. Even though she had been expecting it, that spark of knowing and familiarity still caught her off guard. She felt as if she knew every little detail about this person, she just didn't have access to that part of her memory.

"I hope you do stop by. I would like that."

"Good, I'm glad," James replied with a grin. The feel of her hand in his made sparks climb up his arm and spread out through his body. It was so familiar and comforting, yet something he felt he had been lacking in his life. As if it was a stable object which he had grown used to but it had been missing for years. This was the moment where he found that object again and it took a moment before he could pull his hand away. Yes, he'd be seeing her again. Even if he didn't want to see her he doubt he would be capable of staying away. He felt too drawn to her.
