Who: Rick and Kami, part 2
What:  Rick doesn't take avoidance tactics very well, finds a rather direct method of getting some of Kami's time.
Where: Kami's doorstep, possibly elsewhere afterwards
When: Monday October 18th, later evening.
Warnings:  NO IDEA, will warn if need be.

In spite of prior disappointments over the past few days, it was old promises of cookies and her invigorating smiles kept Rick checking in on the apartment #607, the one that belonged to his coworker...well, belonged to Kami, at least.  That didn't matter, not really.  It had been over a week now, nearly two, since he got to really talk to her.

And now, he wasn't in the mood for being deterred again.  Rick got down on his hands and knees and peered under the door.  None of the lights in the apartment were out, clearly.  He didn't think she was hiding, just was gone for now.  Work?  He wasn't sure.  He even briefly wondered if he had the wrong place, but he smelled lingering warmth and cookies in the air and that was enough to confirm his gut instinct.

Problem was, once Rick was on the floor, he couldn't think of a good reason to get up again.  His legs ached from being up and performing all day at the shows, and from expended a little bit of worry on Kami, a floodgate of other exhaustions decided to roll in as well.  He'd just stretch his legs out a little bit, really.  It helped that the floor was no longer old wooden planks, or smoothed marble, or a dusty desert-scape, and even if the carpet was questionably sanitary, at least it was cozy.   Rick pushed his gym bag under his head, fished out something to read, and decided that he'd hang out just for a little while, to see if he could catch her on her way in or something.  If she didn't show up, whatever, he'd just get upstairs and go to sleep.  So he thought.

And then, as these good ideas tend to go, a busted up health magazine over his face saved only a shred of his dignity as he lay snoring in front of Kami's door.

He grabbed the doorknob and used it to ease himself upright. His other hand was over his hair, trying to erase hints of being a hobo out of it. "More comfy than that carpet? You're as good as they say." Rick grabbed the handle of his sports bag and dragged himself out of her way. The back of his hand stifled a leftover yawn. "So where're you coming from, this late?"

Kami slipped to the door, back to him as she worked the lock. In this position, she could relax her smile into a reflexive grimace at his question but she carefully kept her voice light when she answered. "Work," she said, "and the gym." Pushing the door open, she stepped inside and turned to beckon him, her smile returned to full affection. One of her hands reached out to the side to flick a switch and the interior of her apartment lit obediently.

Just beyond her, he could see builder-white walls softened by a large, comfortable gray sofa and various other chairs, tables, and items that all but screamed Kami's taste. She turned again to allow him further access and moved to set her purse on the kitchen counter. "I have to go to the gym more often now," she explained. One hand patted her hip and she grinned over her shoulder at him. "I still have to keep this in shape, right?"

"You don't have to, but I'm not gonna be the one to discourage," he said, lugging himself and his bag through the door after her. "But someone's got to show you how to work free-weights, so you don't have to be out so late."

Rick took in the room around him, having gone from bleary to near glimmering with curiosity. He skimmed his palm over the fabric of her sofa and hummed softly. "You weren't kidding about comfy. This place looks like it's been lived in years. A person's pad says a lot about them, you know?"

Kami laughed. "If it does, ignore the boring white walls," she answered. "I haven't gotten around to taking care of those yet. Then again, they spent a week being all Hercules set." The glow returned to her smile, though, it was easy to see she was pleased by his reaction to her decorating sense. "Have a seat, hon. Make yourself comfy. Can I get you anything to drink?"

Rick dropped his bag by the sofa, but in spite of her invitation, he didn't sit down himself. Instead, he slipped his sneakers off and followed Kami towards the kitchen.

"Something light," he said. "Whatever keeps your candle burning this time of night."

Though he considered pulling out one of her kitchen chairs, Rick leaned against the wall and watched Kami work the kitchen instead. "No roommate anymore, then?"

Kami glanced over her shoulder and shook her head at him with a funny little smile. "Nope," she answered. "This place isn't really big enough for one. It's cozy." Digging through a cupboard, she retrieved a mug, hesitated, and then took down another. She held them up for his inspection; one was bright pink with hearts and the other had the ubiquitous Disney castle logo. "Tea alright? I have juice, milk, and maybe some soda if it's not."

"Tea's great. It's getting hella cold out there these days." He watched her, but more what she was doing than Kami herself. Then he mussed the hair at the back of his head. Distracted and self-conscious was far from his style, and a warning sign in itself.

"Look. I've been down here a few times, to see if you were around. Sounds weird but I didn't know how else to reach you. But it surprised me, you know?" He smiled, but the piss-poor kind of smile that held back real hard on something. "Crowds part for people like you. So when did you become so hard to find?"

The clink of the mugs on her clean counters sounded loud int the immediate silence that greeted his question. Her back to him, Rick watched Kami's shoulders tense for a moment before lifting and then lowering. It wasn't a shrug; it was more an acknowledgment of defeat - that much was clear when she turned around to face him with a solemn-eyed expression. "I'm..." She paused and bit down on her lower lip before leaning back into the counter behind her as if it would support her.

"Rick, I'm sorry," she practically whispered. "I didn't mean to... No, that's a lie. I did. Because it was easier." She watched him with wary, dark eyes. "Not a very good friend, am I?"

Rick moved into the kitchen proper, and did not look away from that despairing little gaze that he had never seen from her before. He reached out as if to pat her arm or back, but hesitated, then stopped just short of touching her elbow. "Hey now. It's okay. I never said that. I just meant that I missed you, Kams."

The counter was plenty big enough for two bodies to lean against. Rick put his hands against the counter behind his back. "I don't really get it, though. What would get easier by avoiding me?"

Without an immediate, easy answer at hand, Kami shook her head. Then she tipped sideways to lean into Rick's solid warmth and turned her face into his shoulder. "I miss it," she muttered, words muffled. "I miss working with you and singing the songs and dancing. You were one of my favorite parts."

He settled back against the counter, looked down at Kami with kind eyes and pursed lips. He hadn't been raised to take quick advantage of upset women, though really, they had held each other this many times before. Even if that had been only acting, it familiar and soothing. He bent his arm around her shoulder, and put a hand at the back of Kami's smooth hair.

"Hey. It's not like you'll never sing and dance again. Out of everyone, you can't quit it." He tipped his chin against the crown of her hair, inviting her to stay as close as she wished. "Hey, let's run away and join American Idol, alright? Dancing with the Stars."

"We're over-qualified." Though her answer was glib, he could easily see the tension that left her petite frame the moment he touched her. By not pushing her away, he seemed to have solved at least a third of her problems. He could almost feel her smile against his shoulder and then, suddenly, he felt her arm slip around his back, settling just above the counter behind them. "Thank you," she whispered. "I probably don't deserve it but... Thank you."

Lifting her head again, Kami regarded Rick with affection and gratitude. "You are an amazing guy, did you know that?" she asked. "Really, Rick. A total prince and then some. Any girl in her right mind should snap you up."

"Tell all of your sisters and friends," he said, the joke turning up the corner of his mouth. Rick eased against the counter naturally, goaded by Kami's apparent ease. In all this time he hadn't seen her or talked to her, had she had anyone to talk to or lean on? The idea of someone as light and fun as Kami, being lonely, disturbed him.

"Maybe I can talk to the guys running the show. Get you back in." He squeezed his hand over her shoulder. "Babe. It can't be as bad as they say."

"I don't know what they're saying," she pointed out, responding to his increased touch with warmth and further relaxation despite the topic. "Mostly because I really don't want to know."

Kami tilted her head a bit as she paused. "I want to come back," she finally continued in a soft whisper, "but I don't think Disney can overlook what happened. Princesses don't do certain things." She flushed a bit, mouth pursing and her dark eyes sliding to look just over his shoulder. "It's probably some miracle that I got to stay there at all." A suspicious shine touched her gaze now and, if he looked closely, there was the slightest of wobbles to her bottom lip.

Rick pressed his own lips together. It was like he could feel his misstep through her body language. "To hell with that then," he said, and left the topic alone in favor of silence. Keeping her in the hug, he looked over the crown of her head and collected his thoughts.

Emotional soothing and heart-to-hearts wasn't his forte - at least, he was sure he couldn't be as comforting as Kami would have been for him. And he helped out his dude friends before, took them out drinking until they threw up all their worries, but he never had a female friend as upset as this. But he wasn't going to walk out. He had sought her out in the first place, and had wanted to know what was wrong. He couldn't make good on their friendship if he left her like this.

"They can't tell you who you are anyway," he said. In spite of the mood, the gravity, and the subject matter...Rick pulled out from within him a broad, sunny smile. One he hadn't shared with her since the day they ate crepes together. "Because you were born a princess, right? Nobody can take that away."

A strange little hiccup answered his announcement, a cross between a sob and a laugh, and Kami's arms slipped neatly and tightly around his waist as she accepted and pressed further into the comforting hug. "Oh, Rick," she whispered. "I can't believe you remember that. It was so silly." She turned her head to rest her cheek against his chest and listened to his heart for a moment. The catch in her voice was already fading and she gave a small sigh. "Right," she continued, giving him another squeeze. "I'm a princess and no one can take that away."

Kami lifted her head finally and smiled up at him. The expression matched his and he knew that, as good as she was, no one was that good an actress. "It definitely helps when a guy like you treats me that way, you know," she pointed out. "Thank you so very much, Rick." Untangling from him, she reached up to tug him downwards so she could deliver a sweet, little kiss to his cheek. "You'll always be my Prince Ali."

"I have the edge over him. I don't even need the hat." But otherwise he accepted the praise - and the little hero's kiss - with pride and grace. He stepped aside, out of the kitchen and out of her way, assuming she still had a mind to make tea.

So five minutes after her offer for him to sit down, Rick actually went over to the couch, and threw himself onto it, limbs out in all directions. A glow of self-satisfaction simply radiated off of him.

"Tell me you had a movie you were gonna watch tonight," he said, folding his arms behind his head. He tilted his face back, so he could look at her in an upside-down sort of way. "And leftovers or something. I'm starving."

"You're a bottomless pit, aren't you?" Despite her accusation, there was no bite in Kami's tone and, in fact, there was a strong undercurrent of laughter beneath the words. A faint clatter interrupted her as she finished the tea and then she moved to open the refrigerator door. "You're so lucky that you're cute."

Less than five minutes later, Kami appeared in front of her sprawled friend, two mugs in one hand while the other balanced a plate. Ever so carefully, she lowered the mugs to the coffee table. Then she moved to present the plate for inspection and it was charming how she had taken the time to make a turkey sandwich and two brownies as attractive as possible. "Does this meet your approval, my prince?" she purred teasingly. "Paired with some random dumb romantic comedy?"

"I think the dumber, the better." The food was more than enough to pull him out of his slouch, grinning and leaning towards her food. His eyes flashed up towards hers.

"Are you kidding, Kami? Everything here looks good, but if it's all the same to you..." Rick then picked up his brownie, and tipped it towards her in a cheers manner. "Dessert first."

"Whatever his highness wants," Kami returned easily, "he gets. It's what being royalty is about, isn't it?" Flashing him another smile over her shoulder, she moved to crouch in front of the low, slightly shabby cabinet that held her small television and began pawing through a stack of DVDs. Expression safely hidden by the excuse of concentration, Kami added, "I've missed you, hon. I'm really sorry. I'll have to make it up to you."

She paused to discard one, two, three choices. Then she stood and brandished a copy of The Princess Bride, a wicked glint in her eyes. "Not so stupid but a total classic. Can we please?"

"Never seen it, but I'll trust you." He smiled, and settled into the couch for a good, relaxing night. Quite an upgrade from the carpet of a hallway, he thought. "It's cool. Show me this, and I'll consider us made up."

"More than made up." Kami neatly slipped the DVD in and booted up the television. Then she joined Rick on the couch, brushing a light kiss over his cheek before settling in at his side. It felt wonderfully like they really had made up and that he had forgiven her for her horrible behavior. She smiled and snuggled even more securely against him as she hit the button to start the movie. She would just have to make sure she never let her stupid pride and anger at others hurt people like Rick again. He was too sweet.
