hot summer streets
Who: EVERYONE.
What: Pax Letale pool party.
Where: Pax pool.
When: Wednesday, June 20; in-game time, 7 p.m.
Notes: Hey guys -- you know the rules. Tag/label your posts, ask for permission coming into threads, etc etc. Any questions, toss 'em at the the modbox.

Despite the mildly warm weather, a pall seemed cast over the planned festivities. All throughout the day, clouds had swarmed the skies, covering the apartment complex in shadow. The passing of the sun did little to aid in this, though as it grew closer and closer to the established party time, the pool area was made ready for its assumed guests.

A sickly green light emanated from the pool itself, the glow growing stronger as the darkness encroached. Strung lights hung from the covered sitting areas, their colors punching through the darkness without shame. Music scattered itself, blaring softly from a nearby boombox that was controlled by an unseen hand; nearby, a table was laden with as expensive of foods as had become expected from these types of social situations: shrimp cakes, lobster sliders, three-queso dip with accompanying chips, and more. Perhaps to the guest's chagrin, there were no alcoholic beverages to be spoken of, but those who decided to BYOB would not find it difficult to do so. Otherwise, a flavorful fruit punch was on hand for thirsty attendees.

As the hour grew nearer, people started to collect outside of the pool, helping themselves to food, some sitting at the pool's edge with their feet dangling in the water. The music, which had been alternating between old summer time hits and the latest pop ballads, began to croon out a familiar tune, though only those listening closely might have heard any true malice in the lyrics.

Hot summer streets
And the pavements are burning
I sit around
Trying to smile but
The air is so heavy and dry...

...it's a cruel, cruel summer...

Rafe/Gabe - Cabanas - 7:45 p.m.
[info]freyr

Rafael lounged beneath the gauzy awning of a cabana, a drink—mostly gin—in one hand and a cigarette in the other. The smile on his face was as beautiful as it was unnatural. Earlier he had found his spirits flagging, brought down by undue contemplation of recent events. So in the quiet of Alice's bathroom, in between stripping down and donning the small black trunks he now wore, he had bolstered himself with a few fine lines of white powder. Now, as the gathering slowly grew, Rafael felt increasingly certain his decision had been a good one. He was able to greet those who came within his orbit, to smile and offer conversation to those who lingered for any length of time. And as his second drink began to disappear, he found it easier to even reach out, to wave as he saw newcomers arrive poolside, and pretend that all was well.

Gabe made his way downstairs after he realized he was late -- or, rather, he'd taken a break from writing and, after seeing the clock, realized it was past time for the party to have started -- and was pleased to see the attendance as he walked out through to the pool area. Most seemed broken off into pre-established cliques, a thing he could begrudge no one, so he focused on helping himself to a drink and taking the lay of the land before deciding on who to approach first. That was how he found Rafe, reclining in a corner all his own.

He had not spoken to the other man since Eshan's brief but sudden appearance in Pax Letale -- he'd since gone back to his own apartment downtown, though their visits were frequent and outside of their living quarters -- and he hoped that Rafe wasn't mad at him. He knew well enough Rafe wouldn't be mad, necessarily, but Gabe still wanted to check in on him and make sure he was doing all right.

Holding his drink, he padded quietly around the pool area, smiling and nodding at the people he passed as he made his way over to the cabana where Rafe had ensconced himself. His approach was half hidden simply because of the shading cabana walls, so he paused just outside of it in case Rafe needed or wanted an escape.

"Hey," he started, keeping his voice level as he raised his drink in Rafe's direction. Then he motioned to the chair next to him. "Mind if I sit?"

Rafe's broad smile split wider still at the sound of his friend's voice. He raised his glass in returned toast, turning slightly in his chair to better watch Gabriel's approach. Quite pointedly his gaze did not linger anywhere in particular, flitting over Gabe's form only briefly before solidly fixing on his face.

"Of course not," he said. He sat up a little straighter, scattering ash to the lounge chair and the ground in his wake. "I'm glad you could join us. Where's your plus one? Or were we not allowed those..."

He ignored the ache in his chest at his own words, the hurt he still felt, filling both voids and his traitorous, yammering mouth with a generous sip from his glass. Eshan's unwelcome face retreated from memory as his varied forms of intoxication crept back up.

Gabe frowned, allowing himself to sit before responding any part of what Rafe had said. The other man's surprisingly good mood struck him, and it made him wonder just what was in his glass.

"Ah, no," he finally said, leaning forward with his own drink balancing between his fingers as he sat on the edge of the lawn chair. "He had to skip, so I just thought I'd pop in and see how everyone was doing. Especially you," he added, his brows rising and falling as his eyes couldn't seem to stay on Rafe's face. "I just wanted to apologize, that I should have said something to Eshan... That I should have said something to you, and I wish you hadn't run off like that... Though I totally understand why..." Words felt fleeting, and especially strange in the light of the fact that he felt so damned comfortable around Rafe in spite of all that had transpired.

And, of course, there was the dream, which he wasn't going to mention, if he could avoid it. Maybe that was why it was so hard to look at him. It wasn't as though he didn't already know what was under Rafe's clothes, but somehow now it felt different. He quickly wetted his mouth with a sip, grasping for something else to say. "Did you find somewhere else to stay?"

Nodding, Rafael ashed his cigarette, then raised it for another long drag. With his glass he gestured toward a leggy redhead across the pool, her fair skin perfectly accented by her cherry-print bikini and shorts. "Alice took me in," he said. "I've got my own key and everything. And all the cupcakes I can eat. Which isn't much, honestly, but I still appreciate the thought." He chuckled, tossing back the last of his gin. He crunched loudly on a piece of ice. "I'm going to talk to Nish about getting out of my lease, too. So don't apologize, Gabriel. This is for the best."

He spoke too quickly, wanted too badly to fill the silent spaces between them. Warmth rose to his cheeks as he realized his missteps, but as he so often did, he found himself helpless to avoid them. He set his glass aside on a nearby table, then focused all his attention on the dwindling cigarette dangling from one corner of his mouth. "So how's Eshan liking the place?" he asked, hating himself for every word he spoke. "Not having any weird dreams or animals showing up on your fire escape or anything, I hope." The flush deepened, but he distracted himself from it, tossing one cigarette aside and reaching for another from the battered cloth bag at his feet.

"He doesn't live with me." The words came out awkwardly, and Gabe immediately wondered at his own phrasing. He, like Eshan was some foreign entity, a separate, singular thing that had little to no relation to Gabe despite the fact that they were an item. "I mean, we don't live together. He has his own place, downtown; got it pretty cheap, considering how businesses are leaving the Hollywood area left and right. So, uh, yeah." His cup lifted to his lips, a long, slow sip allowing him to consider his next words.

"We've only been dating for three months. Known him for six." What he wanted to say was not everything is us and we were different. Their time together, though short, seemed like a blur -- two months in Florida, followed by their time together in California. After that burn (and that was what it felt like, when it had ended, a terrible crashing burn), Gabe had started taking things a little more slowly, cautiously. He admitted to himself slowly when he liked people, but was always careful about taking things to the next step. It was always easier, too -- he'd quickly found that he'd never felt quite the way about any of his other paramours the way he did about Rafe, and that knowledge was getting enthusiastically underlined the more time he spent with the other man. The other side of the coin, though, was that it was deeply and unsettlingly unclear how Rafe felt about him, and Gabe had no desire to manipulate the other man into something that wasn't real.

"I'm just... I'm just saying, you could have stayed. But I'm glad that Alice is being good to you. You always were good about picking yourself up," he admitted, glad to see that Rafe had, indeed, pulled himself together in spite of the tragedy that had recently visited him. "If there's anything you need, though, let me know. You know that, right?"

"Right," Rafael agreed, so quickly his words almost stumbled over Gabe's. It sounded all the more stilted for his having been silent during Gabriel's uncomfortable monologue. (Made slightly less uncomfortable, Rafael noted, by Gabriel's neatly passing over any mention of dreams.) He distracted himself from this failing by lighting his next cigarette, then tossing pack and lighter back into the bag. Immediately he set to rummaging through it once more, coming up from its depths with a flask gripped tightly in one hand. A tendril of smoke coiled up and out, following the motion of fingers and flask as he held it out to his friend.

"Of course. Would you like some? I came prepared to share. I just really wasn't in a mood for punch, and I was sure at least a few others would feel the same."

Gabe's somber mood dissipated slightly, a smile moving over his mouth at the sight of Rafe's illicit goods. He nodded, taking the flask from Rafe and adding a little to his cup. He capped the container and handed it back to his friend, glad that they were easing back into some semblance of normalcy.

"I don't think anyone here would be in the mood for punch, but I think a liquor license might be out of the question for an apartment complex. Though, with the amount they spend on everything else here..." He shrugged, lifting the cup to his lips and taking a long sip. The gin burned through his throat, a fruity aftertaste shrinking in comparison after it. Rafe's mention of dreams had not entirely passed him by; it just seemed that discussing that topic would pull out more ill will between himself and his former s/o, and yet Rafe had been nothing more than interested in Gabe's life. Then again, the other man was always someone to put others before himself.

"How've you been, though? I never see you." Except in my head, but that doesn't really count, does it?

Rafael shrugged. That question was impossible, utterly without any answers that would be truthful or satisfying. He bought himself time with a lungful of smoke and a careful repositioning of himself on the lounge chair. After refilling his cup from the flask he moved the cloth bag to the ground, within easy reach of his hand, neatly placing it so that it remained folded closed.

"I'm good," he said, rubbing at his nose with the pad of his thumb. "I'm fine. I'm taking it a little easy with work, catching up on television and sleep instead. Alice's couch is more comfortable than most. For the most part I've been sleeping like the dead." When I do manage to sleep, he did not add. "So, you know. I haven't been out as much." He chuckled, sipping from his freshly replenished drink. "I'm sure you've been busy with your book, too, though. That's probably why you haven't seen me. I hope all that is going well."

The smile broadened, Gabe ducking his head as one hand rose to rub at his nape, caught in the truth of Rafe's words.

"Yeah," he finally said, the response loose. More drink, more liquor. That, or Rafe's presence, or a combination thereof, and he felt certain that they were still on good terms. He'd had no reason to be nervous earlier. "Final draft's in, just has to go through one more review and then it's off to the presses. Can barely believe it, I feel like it was just yesterday I was pitching the idea...

"But, I mean, I've told you enough about that. We should get you out, more," he said, the hand holding his cup rising to point a gently accusing finger in Rafe's direction. "Should use that camera you just spent all that money on. Maybe we could take Spot down to the beach, give you a subject. Or, I don't know, just something." He imbibed a little more, his muscles loosening even more. "Just get out, stop thinking about... you know, dreams and weird things going on. Especially when those dreams are, uh..." He caught himself just before he let slip the idea that the dreams were better than real life, in that at least in them he could touch Rafe, instead of being resigned to the scant distance that his relationship status required.

"Vivid," Rafe finished. "Yes. I, uh." Fresh color flooded his cheeks, and in force. He tried to hide behind his raised glass, but that small obstacle did nothing to conceal his visceral reaction. It was written on his face that he had more to say than he was giving voice. He cleared his throat and fidgeted in his seat.

"I think that would be good. A distraction, I mean. I haven't really used the camera much yet, except for some macro shots of Alice's baking. I'm hoping she'll be able to use them for her shop or website, but we'll see. I haven't really shown them to her yet, so. You know I could always use a little practice, and some shots of you and Spot would be nice."

He rambled, but the vibrant memory of the dream remained, and Rafe could not shake the feeling that he had not been alone in his dreaming. Gabriel's own words seemed to confirm this. At once he ached to ask and knew that he could not; he sank his teeth around the filter of his cigarette, willing himself to hold back a torrent of wholly inappropriate questions.

Rafe's nearly-wordless response was more than enough encouragement to make Gabe ask questions dancing at the tip of his tongue. He licked his lips, leaning forward as though they needed more privacy than they already had.

"You told me, before, back when we went to the spa, that people remembered sharing dreams, especially..." He stopped, groping for the right words that would both illuminate and yet not reveal too much. "Ones where...others felt...familiar?" He could recall both dreams he'd had with this Freyr person, interacting with Xochipilli. The first had been far tamer than the second, though perhaps by sheer dint of being introductory, and the color on Rafe's face implied that he, too, could recall something not family friendly.

"Do you... Have you...?" He shrugged, unsure of what to say.

Rafael was just as unsure of the question Gabe clearly wanted to ask. He knew the answer, though, and this time the depths of his intoxication and Gabe's wonderful, welcome proximity made certain he was comfortable offering it.

"Yes." The flush in his cheeks did not abate with the admission. He pushed forward all the same, his voice so low it was almost impossible to hear beneath the steady thump of music. "The other night, I... dreamed about us. Sort of." He raked a hand through his hair. A nervous laugh made his cigarette twitch upward at the corner of his mouth. "A little different from when we were kids, but... it was still you, and still me, and these other people we see in dreams. It was..." He swallowed hard around the lump that had risen in his throat, and hoped his body's other stirrings were equally unnoticeable to any observer.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I shouldn't be saying all this."

"No, no," Gabe said, shaking his head. The cup (and the liquid it held) swayed with his movements, his whole body shifting forward until he was on the edge of his seat, clearly coming as close to Rafe as he could without touching him. His own face was now red, and he was glad for the sparse light offered by the party decor that hid their expressions from each other.

"I mean, I asked. And..." Saying it was crazy seemed unnecessary. But saying it aloud felt better. "It's crazy. And I'll just say it was as good as it was?" His tongue was too loose, either via the alcohol or something else. "Sorry, that...that was inappropriate. I just. I don't think I've had a dream like that since I was a teenager.

"And you said you've had a lot of these? With other people in the building?" He quickly changed the subject, tangentially, to give them both some breathing room.

But Rafael's mind was decidedly on one track; he could not stop himself from answering quickly and decisively. "Not like that. Never like that, before you." His face was on fire. He turned it downward, burying his gaze in what little liquor remained in his cup. When the last of his poured gin was gone, he set aside his cup for the last time, silently cursing himself for failing to bring a larger container.

"I've had a dream with Alice," he said, pointing to the redhead once more. "And there was a younger kid named Ben here. I dreamed he was related to me somehow... and Nish, too. I don't know what causes them, or why they... are what they are..." He cleared his throat, tapping ash from his cigarette to the ground. Drunk, high, and reeling from this unexpected confession, he raised his eyes to Gabe's and stumbled headlong into more words he should not have said.

"It was good. I didn't realize how much I'd missed—um, that. You know."

Gabe couldn't deny the smile that curved his mouth, the softness that lined his eyes with Rafe's admission. It wasn't clarity, necessarily, regarding how Rafe felt now, but it was reassuring to hear all the same.

"Yeah. Yeah, I know what you mean." They lapsed into silence, though not uncomfortable. It took everything in Gabe to not reach forward, press a hand to Rafe's knee, knowing that it would only lead to more. They might have been semi-hidden from view of others clustered around the pool, seated inside the cabana, but they were in plain sight of his own conscience.

"I've missed you a lot, anjo," he finally said, the nickname slipping in without warning. "I'm just glad I have you back, you know? Even just as this." He wasn't trying to set limits to their relationship, necessarily, but say he was happy even if he and Rafe were only ever friends.

Still, that just stuck in Rafael's mind, hard and sharp as a fishbone caught in his throat. His blush faintly faded. The jangling of his nerves quieted a bit. But every word was true; if this was all he could have of Gabriel, it was better than the void he had had before. He knew [Freyja] would have agreed. So he nodded, and smiled, and shifted slightly closer to his friend.

"Mmhm. I know. It was never the same after you." He chuckled, and the sound seemed sadder than anything else. He sniffed, and rubbed idly at his nose. "You know, years ago I found this little Cuban place I wanted to take you. I wonder if it's even still open. You'd love the coffee there. Keep you up all night. They have good fried plantains, too. We should go some time."

Finishing off the remnants of his cup, Gabe nodded. He slid back onto his chair, finding a more comfortable position, believing they were both good. He knew he felt good, just being there in Rafe's presence, wading back into the easy conversation they'd always shared.

"Definitely," he agreed. "I hope it's still there. But even if it's not, we'll find more things to do. Taking pictures of Spot at the beach, or I could just watch you surf, or... you know, whatever." I just want to have you around more. Once again, as he had before, Eshan was nowhere in his thoughts. He adjusted his glasses, refracting the few colored lights that spotted the now well-fallen dusk, and cleared his throat with a cough.

"So you said Nish was going to help you get out of your apartment? You're not... Are you staying in this complex? Or are you going to move elsewhere?" Gabe did his best to keep any lilting hint of worry out of his tone, but it was there. The clear hesitance that Rafe might be wandering further away was more than evident.

His cigarette having dwindled to nothing, Rafael leaned down and crushed it out on the concrete. He dropped it and its predecessor into his empty cup, and settled back to enjoy his friend's presence for as long as it would last. His head canted on green mesh, his eyes ever on Gabe's. He told himself he was only watching the way the lights danced on his face, the way the wind blew now and then and stirred a lock of hair. These were objectively lovely things, irrespective of any feelings he still harbored.

"Oh, no. I want to stay," he said. "That's probably stupid, considering... but I like being here. I like being near my friends." Near you. "And it really isn't such a bad place, most of the time." He smiled, an off-kilter, unsteady thing. "You're stuck with me for now."

"Shucks," Gabe replied, snapping his fingers as though he'd lost at some unspoken game, teasing, his unease melting away as he grinned back at Rafe. He leaned, setting his empty cup on the ground between their chairs, then settled more firmly into his seat.

"You give any thought to which floor you'd wanna be on? The eighth is pretty empty, just saying. And I could use a dog sitter, since you said you've got so much free time on your hands." He folded his own across his stomach, watching Rafe with a please smile on his mouth.

Rafael grinned broadly, nodding as he stretched out on the lounge and raised his arms above his head. His back sounded a satisfying crack. "I could absolutely do that," he said. "I've been thinking about getting another fish, but Spot could keep me occupied. I was thinking the fourth—Alice is all alone up there right now—but the eighth would be nice." He arched a brow, amber eyes twinkling as he looked to Gabe. "Are you sure you wouldn't mind? Me being so close? I wouldn't want to cause any problems..."

"Why would that cause a problem?" Gabe's brows drew together across his forehead, his smile shrinking slightly. "I just, I kinda hoped—as long as we're OK—that we'd be hanging out more, and then if we both lived on the same floor it'd be easier...

"But I'm not trying to...well, I am influencing you, just a little bit. If you'd rather be near Alice, that's fine. I mean, I could get more pastries out of it," he grinned. One of his feet tapped the ground, a little impatiently, but he calmed it. "Seriously, Rafe, I wouldn't mind. At all." If there was someone else who might, that person was absent from Gabe's thoughts, in that moment.

All he could picture was Rafe being right across the hall. It would be a sweet torture, but it would reassure him that he could do something before more trauma befell his friend. Not to mention simply have an excuse to see him over and over and over.

Rafael's thoughts had taken a similar turn. He could not suppress the smile they brought, or the warmth they stirred in his soul. And in that moment his mind was made up. He was nodding before he realized, his smile growing with every tip of his head. "Well... all right," he said. "If I can afford an apartment on your floor, I'd like that very much."

After a brief hesitation, he sat up in his chair. His feet swung over the side as he moved to the edge of the seat. Reaching out, he pressed a hand to Gabe's thigh. "Of course we're OK, Gabe. Please don't worry about that, all right? Don't worry about us at all."
