Four days of nonstop rain had most of the people on the island feeling out of sorts and on edge. At least the main camp area stayed dry the past few days so that they could begin building the medical center, but Sydney was glad she suggested another bonfire for this evening, figuring that everyone could use an opportunity to relax and socialize. Maybe by fostering the sense of community even more, they would appease the gods and finally get the sunshine back.

There was plenty of food available for everyone and the fire was blazing for both light and warmth. Off to one side, the finished boards were set up for Cam's bean bag toss game. They really did need to figure out some additional leisure activities they could partake in here without equipment. It was too bad they didn't have a radio.

Ray Palmer | the A.T.O.M. Exosuit
[info]_atom
2016-04-23 11:02 pm UTC (link)
Maybe this bonfire was going to be different than the last, but if anyone was interested in more show and tell or sharing and caring, Ray was ready this time. Last time, he hadn't been able to offer up any decent stories, because he was more enthralled in the stories that the others were telling. He'd gotten his A.T.O.M. exosuit, though, with the last haul the gods had dropped off in their camp and Ray was ready to talk someone's ear off about the exosuit. That was the one thing he was the most proud of creating in Palmer Tech labs.

When he was ready to speak, he opened the little carrying case inside which the miniaturized version of the suit was held. It stood only a few inches tall in the tiny case, surrounded in padding to keep it safe. "This is easily my biggest technological accomplishment. This...is the A.T.O.M. Exosuit. A.T.O.M. stands for Advanced Technology Operating Mechanism. The functioning components are made from dwarf star alloy which, back home, is a really rare substance I managed to get my hands on, luckily for me. So that makes the suit lightweight but strong. It's fitted with several different functions, the most notable of which are facial recognition software developed by a friend, Felicity Smoak, and of course, the nanotechnology.

"So...as you can see, this suit is...pretty small. Right?" he asked, holding it up in its case. To the casual viewer, it would look like an especially pampered action figure. But when he took it out, the simple press of a button had it expanding to full Ray-sized proportions, opening for him to put on. For the time being, he merely stood beside it, holding it upright with one hand. "But that's just the nanotechnology. So! Interestingly enough, the suit can actually shrink the space between atoms, even the wearer inside it. So what does that mean? Well...basically...I can shrink myself to approximately the size of a human white blood cell. I don't always have to go that small, but I can and I have — which is a story all its own.

"Anyway," he continued with a bright, proud smile, "the suit has lots of other functionality. It can fly, for one. It's also especially durable and can give a little increase in the strengh of the wearer. Largely that has a lot to do with kinetic energy; when the suit is in motion there's more force, and this is also true when it's in its shrunken state. It has weapons onboard, as well...is safe to use in a vacuum with no oxygen, for short periods of time...it also has a portable radiograph, oh! Oh! Oh wow, I actually forgot I had that, oh! Ha! That'll be useful for the medical center...huh." He looked distracted for a moment. "Sorry!" he almost shouted with realization before continuing. "Right, also it has an advanced computer system with a heads up display, which I like to call the HUD for short, on the face plate to keep me in the loop and it has a neutral link to it, which basically means that the suit can be controlled remotely. I used that once, before I learned to fight; I had a friend remote access the suit while I was wearing it to help me take down a bad guy," he said, smirking a little bit at the fact that he'd literally just been given a chance to say that he 'took down a bad guy.'

"Okay so...uhhh...questions? Oh! Duh," he laughed. "Does anyone want to see it in action?"

Ray and Jemma

Jemma had intentionally kept a low profile for the last day, after her unintentional but rather embarrassing faux pas last night. She hadn't meant to upset the boy, she had simply been excited at the likelihood of having found someone suffering from a rare condition. She hadn't meant to seem cold, but she had cringed this morning when she'd read over what she'd written last night. She was going to have to be more careful - the nurse and everyone else had scolded her, and with reason. From now on, she would make more effort to think before she spoke, and not allow her excitement to get the best of her. It wasn't a good thing when it hurt other people's feelings, or frightened them. That wasn't the person she wanted to be.

She sat near the fire, listening as Ray spoke. She was still rather fond of him, and he was definitely still on her short list for having a child with when the time came. If, of course, she hadn't fallen out of favor with him. But that was irrelevant right now. Now was a night for stories and camaraderie and she intended to enjoy it.

When she saw his display, her eyes went wide, and she watched in controlled silence. The technology of something like that wasn't Jemma's specialty - it was Fitz's. And she missed Fitz right now, like nothing she'd ever known. He'd be fascinated by that suit. And Jemma wouldn't be worried about proving herself to people who didn't know her. She'd have a friend here, someone in that corner. Bloody hell, she missed him.

"I'd like to see," she said after a moment. Maybe, if she chose to go home, she could at least relate the story to Fitz. She had no doubt that he could figure out how to reconstruct it if she could explain in enough detail.

Ray heard the first voice speak up and his eyes shifted to find the source, his smile brightening when he saw Jemma. He had gotten a good first impression of her, although he hadn't given much — if any — focus on the idea of prospects since he'd arrived. After the night with Patty, he hadn't bothered again with anyone. It wasn't necessarily because he was attached to her, even though he was, but mostly because Ray was used to going for long stretches without sex, whether because he was single or because he was working on something particularly interested that pulled his focus from anything else. He didn't feel particularly needy in that vein and he figured that if he could do without, then he ought to make himself more useful in the downtime. Which, of course, was why he'd thrown himself all in helping people build shelters and learn to make palm fiber cord and, now, help build the medical facility after having worked with Cisco to get the electricity in order. It was exhilarating to be a part of something so new. To be down in the trenches, so to speak, of the thing knowing that once the building was completed, he could say that his hands had helped to erect it. That was just so cool to Ray.

"Oh, sure!" he chirped brightly in response to her request. Ray stepped into the suit after powering up the propulsion system on the back of the suit. Once he'd gotten himself situated in the thing, he pulled down the glass face plate and started powering up the remaining propulsion systems on his shoulders, arms, and legs. "What do you want to see first?" he asked, grinning proudly.

"I want to see you shrink," she said, and there was a twinkle of amusement in her eyes. How could she want anything but that, really? It was a fascinating idea, and she thought maybe there had been some sort of movie about getting tiny and getting stuck inside a person or something when she was a small child. She was quite certain that it had been chock full of scientific inconsistencies, so she was glad she couldn't remember it in details. Some things were better left to small minds and memories.

"Does it hurt?" She couldn't imagine that such a compression felt good - in her estimation it had to at least be uncomfortable. "I'll likely have more - and better - questions afterwards."

Gale and OTA
[info]afiercegale
2016-04-24 12:33 am UTC (link)
Gale had already told the only story that he wanted to tell. He didn't want to relate to others what it had been like to grow up in District 12. He didn't want to explain what it had been like when his father had died in the mines and he'd had to take care of his mother and his younger siblings. He didn't want to talk about how he'd felt leading the remnants of his shattered people out of District 12, bloody refugees with nothing left to their names.

He wasn't ashamed of the things he'd done, but he didn't feel the need to share them, especially since he was fairly certain that hardly anyone here would understand first hand what he'd been through. And if there was one thing Gale wasn't looking for, it was pity.

But he'd come to the bonfire anyway, more out of boredom than out of any real connection to these people. Gale wasn't a guy who made connections easily. He was reserved, and knew that he could be harsh at times. But he was who he was. And if people didn't like it, well, they could jump his ass like that Lydia girl had.

And sure, maybe he'd had a point. And maybe if she hadn't been a total bitch about it, he would have backed off a little more and apologized to her. But she'd made it into a war, and Gale didn't like losing.

Sitting in front of the fire, he stared into it, watching the flames dance and tell their enigmatic stories. If anyone wanted to talk to him tonight, he wouldn't push them away - in fact, he'd probably enjoy it, but he was also content just to sit here and think, and just enjoy being in the proximity of others.

Scott had come tonight. Last week he'd missed the bonfire since he had been doing his lonely man on the mountain thing. He wasn't certain if he should have come to this one, but it was a chance to get to know the rest of them and he wouldn't become a self imposed outcast.

He wasn't in a sharing mood, however. Scott had no intention on telling a story of Beacon Hills, his pack or anything else. He was pretty sure that way led to nowhere good and potentially an argument. Better he play listener tonight.

He caught sight of Gale who looked about as comfortable being here as Scott did. He sighed then went to sit down next to him. "Hey," he said quietly. "Least it's not raining."

Gale gave Scott a wry grin.

"Yeah? I wonder how long that's going to last for."

He didn't know what to make of 'Gods', and he still hadn't really decided if he could trust them. He'd been a bit wary even when he'd decided to come here, but agreed after he came to the conclusion that no matter how bad they were, they couldn't really be worse than anything in Panem.

"I think I'll take the flash floods over other things," he said and purposely didn't look for anyone from Beacon Hills.

He made himself comfortable with his knees drawn up and his arms loosely around them. "Could be worse, though. A lot worse."

Last week Maria's story went without even a curious question so she wasn't volunteering anything this week. But she did enjoy listening to the other stories and songs so she was content to just be on the sidelines and listen.

The tension had ratcheted up a notch this week. Maria couldn't help but wonder if that would bleed over here. She was watching for it, ready to step in if it decided to come to a head. She really hoped the egos would be kept in check. It hadn't gone unnoticed that it was a full moon this week, and she wondered if that was part of the problem...and if anyone else had taken that into consideration.

Meanwhile, she sat off to the side, nibbling on food as she sprawled a bit lazily on the sand, listening and watching.

Ever since he'd been told that hunting wasn't a good idea, Reese had felt useless. Yes, yes, he was helping with the building as much as he could, but he'd felt that providing food was something that he could maybe do better than just about anyone else. Maybe that had just been wishful thinking, though, since they'd apparently ended up with more food than they could possibly eat.

The thing was, Reese wasn't all that special. He wasn't an Alpha. He wasn't anything, really. He was little more than a mutt - he would have been a mutt if the Pack hadn't helped him out as much as they had and if Nick and Antonio hadn't taken him in.

Nick - who had no idea who he was now.

Reese sighed deeply and sat down with his hands behind him propping him up. It was a moment before he noticed the woman next to him, and smiled a little.

"Hey."

Maria had been aware when the blond had sat down. She was kind of hyper-aware tonight since she was watching for any trouble. At first he seemed kind of lost in his own head. Maria hadn't wanted to disturb that so all she did was scoot a little to give him room.

When he finally seemed to register she was there she smiled back with a nod. "Hey," she said. "Reese, isn't it?" She'd been making a point of learning everyone's name even if she hadn't met them yet.

"So, what do you think of Sex Island?"

There was a little bit of sarcasm in his voice - he liked the place just fine, but the title amused him, especially since he really hadn't had that much sex here yet.

Finnick had been working with the construction crew all day and hadn't had time to prepare a song or story. He kind of had the impression that with all the rain and the building maybe fewer people would be up for that sort of thing this time anyway.

After finishing work he had gone to rinse off the sweat in the lake before coming to the bonfire. His clothes were still wet, as they had been most of the time for days. He took off his shirt and hung it up on a tree branch nearby so at lest he'd have one less clammy piece of clothing clinging to him.

He was tired and he hoped the rain would stop soon, but that didn't mean he was in a bad mood. In fact, he was feeling pretty good about things now that he felt like he was being useful again. He was looking forward to relaxing, spending time with people, listening to some conversations, and maybe playing a round on Cam's new game.

He grabbed some food and sat down near the fire, hoping that he could dry off a little and waited to see what would happen.

Now that Sydney was getting more comfortable here — and with herself — she barely hesitated before approaching Finnick and sitting next to him near the fire. She had a coconut shell of water in her hand, but was skipping the food. If she was going to end up naked in front of other people, she needed to make sure she didn't gain any weight.

"Hi, Finnick, right?" she said, offering him a brief smile. "I'm Sydney. I've seen you around but I don't think we really ever had a chance to talk."

Sydney smiled again. "I'm not sure I'll be any good, but I'm willing to try."

Chris hadn't had time to prepare anything, though he could easily have gotten up and spoken anyway -- Gerard had taught him young how to speak to people and speak well -- but this time he wanted to sit and listen, to hear what people had to say and to see who all was there.

It was good to know that there were people from home here. Hell, it was just good knowing Isaac was here. He might not've had his daughter, but the boy who was for all intents and purposes his son was every bit as good. Knowing that Isaac was alright? That things had continued going well for him after they'd parted ways? Was actually the best part of this entire damn thing for him. Never mind the helping repopulate, never mind the helping rebuild. Knowing Isaac was alright made everything better.

He snagged some food -- because apparently being not dying meant you had an appetite for a while -- and found a place to settle in.

It was dark by the time she'd arrived and she had to admit that she was more than a little bummed that the sun wasn't shining brightly in they sky when she showed up. With that said, though, at least the moon was hung full in the sky and the light that it gave off made it a little less terrifying an endeavor to try to figure out where she was going. It hadn't really occurred to her to ask on the network because she worried people would be sleeping by this hour, so it was a relief when the god who called himself Azibo offered to guide her inland until she could find her own way.

The walk from the beach hadn't been that long, but the path was worn and it seemed like right around the time she seemed to realize that, she looked up and he was gone.

She could hear the crackling of a campfire and the cacophony of voices which brought a smile to her face. Yeah, okay...she was nervous about this place, but how much worse could it possibly be than being a useless lump and hauling herself out of bed every morning to live the exact same monotonous day over and over and over again with no purpose or meaning? It had to be better here. The god who'd spoken in her vision had promised it and Lynne had high hopes.

Some people were off in little groups and others were paired into conversations, but the first person she saw alone when she wandered into camp was the one she approached. "Um...is this..." she started both awkwardly and apologetically for having interrupted his meal, she realized belatedly, as she came closer "...is this the main camp for the project? The...Arva's project?"

Chris was mid-chew when the woman spoke to him; he swallowed quickly and gave her a slightly sheepish smile. "It is," he said with a nod. "I'm going to take an utterly wild stab at things and go with, you're new aren't you?"

He gave her a teasing, easy-going smile, sliding into the role of friendly associate with no trouble whatsoever. It was a particular talent of his, really, though not his best one, the ability to slide from role to role. It was just one that came in handy sometimes. Had saved his life a few times, but so had most of his talents and skills. When you were a hunter, such was your life.

"I'm Chris," he introduced, figuring a name and a friendly face might put her a little more at ease. "Chris Argent."

Johanna had every intention of asking Barry a certain damn question once she saw him, but until she did? She was damn well going to sit by the fire and enjoy the fact that hi she wasn't getting rained on. Oh, and food. Food was good, too. She still couldn't get past the fact that there was more food than she was used to.

When you were from Panem, almost anything was more than you were used to, though.

She sat there, nibbling at the food on her plate and watching the fire. It made her think of Katniss, she noted with a wry smile. The damn girl on fire. God, she missed her friend. Missed everyone she knew. Especially Finnick, and he was right damn here. She shook her head sharply to chase that away. She refused to be sad and morose when she talked to Barry.

Because that? Not the way to get a guy to sleep with you.

Barry was pleased that his post had garnered him some positive responses. Apparently being awkward was something of a draw for the ladies. That was definitely to his benefit since he was really skilled at awkward. And he also apparently earned himself a Lesbian Fairy Godmother so that was something. He could only imagine how Cisco would react when Barry eventually told him about that. Which was precisely why he hadn't told him yet.

Tonight, though, he was looking forward to getting to know Johanna better. If it led to sex, even better. After his very tense swimming session with Patty earlier in the week, he'd been feeling kind of frustrated, which was the whole reason for his post in the first place. When he spotted her hanging out near the fire, he wandered over with a grin. "Hey, Johanna, right? I'm Barry."

She looked up at him and grinned in return. "Unless they changed my name and didn't tell me," she joked. "Yup, that's me."

She studied him interestedly. Oh God, he was cute. The kind of cute that made her want to pet him, yes. But was she saying what kind of petting and where? No, no she most certainly was not.

"So... vibrating, huh?" She just arched an eyebrow. Hey, at least she hadn't actually opened with that one like she'd very nearly been tempted to. She could have tact... on occasion... sometimes.

No not really.

Stiles was a fairly social person, so he enjoyed the bonfires and having a chance to just hang out and mingle with people. It was especially nice to spend some time away from the people he knew from home. Apparently it was impossible to completely escape Beacon Hills drama, even when you were in paradise.

He had no intention of sharing any stories of his own tonight, so he sat quietly near the fire and listened to the other people who shared. It was fascinating to hear about the places some of these people were from, especially the ones like freaking Bruce Banner who he had grown up reading comic books about and had no idea was a real person.

The conversation he and Lydia had a while back, about him possibly being interested in guys, was on his mind too. If he ever wanted to indulge that curiosity, this was the place to do it, but the idea of actually putting himself out there like that was kind of terrifying. He was barely equipped to approach girls. The thought of approaching a guy who may or may not be interested in guys... yeah, he had no idea how that would even work.

With the help of the girls, Cam had managed to get the bean bag — more accurately, sandbag — toss game all set and he had set it up a little ways away from the fire, explaining to anyone who had wanted to learn how to play if they didn't know already and after a few games, he left the others to play it. It was weird, but this place was weirdly starting to feel a little more like home. It wasn't in a way that he could really explain, but he'd gotten comfortable here. It was kind of nice. Sure, there was drama, but it didn't have anything to do with him and anyway, people were people. It was bound to happen. He tended to be a peacekeeper back home, jumping in to try to mediate between opposing sides, but he'd come here to get away from his life back home for a while and so he thought it more prudent to step away from some of his old habits, mediating for strangers being one of them. It wasn't always welcome at home; he doubted very much that it would be welcome here.

The bonfires becoming something of a regular occurence was actually reassuring. In spite of all the aforementioned drama that was unfolding, people were still coming together as a community for something each weekend. Whether the rest of the volunteers realized it or not, Cam realized what the bonfire really was: it was their very first tradition separate from their customs and cultures and lives back home. They'd created a tradition of a weekly bonfire to gather, communicate, share stories, and get to know one another and that, to Cam, was a huge step forward toward becoming a society. Progress.

Seeing Stiles sitting on his own in front of the fire, Cam plopped onto the ground nearby. "Is it cool if I sit here?" he asked. If the guy was over here because he wanted to be on his own, Cam wouldn't have a problem with that and he'd just move somewhere else. But if the guy was sitting over here because he hadn't found anyone to talk to for the moment, then Cam might as well remedy that, right?

"Of course," Stiles said, giving Cam a brief smile. If he really wanted to be alone, he wouldn't have come to the bonfire. And Cam was a good guy. Stiles knew he needed to make an effort to spend more time with people who weren't from home. As much as he cared about Scott and Lydia, he had come here to get away from the drama back in Beacon Hills and it seemed to be following them all here. Making friends with new people couldn't be a bad thing.

Especially since Cam was very attractive and Stiles had noticed him mention on the network that he might be interested in a threesome with a girl and another guy sometime. Ever since seeing that, Stiles had wanted to ask him if he had ever done anything like that — had ever been with a man in any significant way — but that was hardly the kind of thing that came up in casual conversation. Maybe he could figure out how to bring it up now.

"It's really cool that you managed to figure out how to build a cornhole game," he said. "We definitely need to come up with more leisure activities."
