Four days of nonstop rain had most of the people on the island feeling out of sorts and on edge. At least the main camp area stayed dry the past few days so that they could begin building the medical center, but Sydney was glad she suggested another bonfire for this evening, figuring that everyone could use an opportunity to relax and socialize. Maybe by fostering the sense of community even more, they would appease the gods and finally get the sunshine back.

There was plenty of food available for everyone and the fire was blazing for both light and warmth. Off to one side, the finished boards were set up for Cam's bean bag toss game. They really did need to figure out some additional leisure activities they could partake in here without equipment. It was too bad they didn't have a radio.

Last week Maria's story went without even a curious question so she wasn't volunteering anything this week. But she did enjoy listening to the other stories and songs so she was content to just be on the sidelines and listen.

The tension had ratcheted up a notch this week. Maria couldn't help but wonder if that would bleed over here. She was watching for it, ready to step in if it decided to come to a head. She really hoped the egos would be kept in check. It hadn't gone unnoticed that it was a full moon this week, and she wondered if that was part of the problem...and if anyone else had taken that into consideration.

Meanwhile, she sat off to the side, nibbling on food as she sprawled a bit lazily on the sand, listening and watching.

Ever since he'd been told that hunting wasn't a good idea, Reese had felt useless. Yes, yes, he was helping with the building as much as he could, but he'd felt that providing food was something that he could maybe do better than just about anyone else. Maybe that had just been wishful thinking, though, since they'd apparently ended up with more food than they could possibly eat.

The thing was, Reese wasn't all that special. He wasn't an Alpha. He wasn't anything, really. He was little more than a mutt - he would have been a mutt if the Pack hadn't helped him out as much as they had and if Nick and Antonio hadn't taken him in.

Nick - who had no idea who he was now.

Reese sighed deeply and sat down with his hands behind him propping him up. It was a moment before he noticed the woman next to him, and smiled a little.

"Hey."

Maria had been aware when the blond had sat down. She was kind of hyper-aware tonight since she was watching for any trouble. At first he seemed kind of lost in his own head. Maria hadn't wanted to disturb that so all she did was scoot a little to give him room.

When he finally seemed to register she was there she smiled back with a nod. "Hey," she said. "Reese, isn't it?" She'd been making a point of learning everyone's name even if she hadn't met them yet.

"Yeah, that's me," he said. "Let's see if I remember you - Maria?" He knew it was close, even if not exact. He hadn't talked to her much but he too had been keeping a close eye on the network.

"So, what do you think of Sex Island?"

There was a little bit of sarcasm in his voice - he liked the place just fine, but the title amused him, especially since he really hadn't had that much sex here yet.

Actually it was exact. Maria nodded. "Yeah. Maria Hill." All she knew about Reese was he was a werewolf, but he wasn't one of the Beacon Hills crowd. Otherwise she might have moved.

The question got a snort of amusement from her, but she took a moment to think of her answer. "I think it's like any community of people. It has its growing pains, but so far so good. You?"

"I like most of the people here," he admitted easily. "Most of them seem like good types." Of course, it made sense to Reese that those were the sort of people who Arva would choose to make her new society. He felt rather honored sometimes to be among them.

"You've got to kind of expect that not everyone is going to get along. But as long as it doesn't get any worse, it's just...to be expected."

"If everyone got along I'd be really freaked out." Maria chuckled because that would be downright eerie. She'd be on edge every moment waiting for them to shed their exoskeletons and pupate.

"Is that Australia I hear?"

"My accent?" He asked. "Yeah, it is. I've been living in the States for a while now, but I don't think I'll ever get rid of it."

He grinned.

"Have you been there?"

"Once and only briefly." She'd gone to ground in Sydney after mopping up a mess left by an operation that took a hard left turn into all fucked up. If she hadn't stepped in, killed a couple of mercs, bribed some officials then uploaded the information they wanted out there to the news the Middle East would have exploded into the start of World War 3. In other words, it had been a typical Wednesday.

"Never had a chance to go back."

"I'm not sure I want to go back," he sighed. Australia was his home and always would be, but going back there was not only dangerous to his life, but would force him to face things he really didn't want yo face and confront emotions that were best kept hidden. Like the death of his parents.

"But I guess it is what it is. We're here now. We don't have to worry about stuff like that."

Maria looked at Reese after he said that. There was a story there, and she doubted it was a happy one. She wouldn't ask, though. She never asked for the deeper stories knowing she never wanted to share her own. "People usually leave where they come from for a reason, Reese," she said. It was the truth for her too. "Nothing wrong with that."

Then she sighed and looked back over the gathering. "Everything from home doesn't matter." Unless home followed them here. That was the problem with the Beacon Hills group. Fortunately, her dad was long dead. He wouldn't be welcome here anyway.

Reese was definitely grateful for that. He didn't want to get into the story of how his inability to keep it in his pants and his horrible taste in women had led to the death of his parents and his exile from his home. Not exactly something that he wanted to remember.

"Right," he said. "This is a place for us to forget the things that happened at home." Or, if they couldn't forget them, at least they didn't have to share them with everyone they knew.

Nope. No sharing. Maria would happily talk about SHIELD or the Avengers but not about herself. No one needed to take on that baggage. Bad enough she carried it.

"You planning on kids?" Safe enough subject since that was one of the main reasons they were here.

"Well, that's why we're here, isn't it?" He said. "I guess I would be up for it if someone asked me, as long as they were planning on giving it to Arva. But if they wanted to keep it...well, I'd have to think a little more about that."

Maria nodded. She hadn't planned on the pregnancy thing until they were all more settled and comfortable. Primarily that was because of her opinion on the whole thing.

"That choice to give them to Arva is a nice option, but I intend on raising any I have. I'm an all in kind of person." And she intended to do better by any kid of hers than her dad did by her.

Well, Reese really couldn't argue with that. He nodded, although he really hadn't thought through what he wanted when it came to having kids. That whole thing was pretty hypothetical for him, still.

"Wrll, I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding people to have kids with you."

Maria's brows lifted a little as she looked at Reese. Then she grinned as she gave a wry little chuckle. "I don't know about that," she said. "I'm not the most personable type. My rough edges have rough edges." She didn't sound bothered by that, however.

A short laugh came from her.. "Okay I can't argue against that." She'd known too many soldiers and agents for that. "But I'd be willing to bet my still useless Glock most of the guys here feel like you do about keeping the kids." She shrugged a shoulder. "Doesn't matter to me, though. I wouldn't make anyone responsible for something they didn't want.. Between that, and not being attracted to every male here it narrows the pool."

Huh. That surprised Reese a little. He raised an eyebrow at that comment. He'd thought that all of the girls here - yes, all of them - were super attractive, and he was pretty sure he'd sleep with any of them if they asked. He assumed it was the same with the girls. Maybe girls were just...pickier. Or something.

He shrugged.

"Well, maybe you should talk to the ones that you are interested in."

Maria had already been rejected once. Her ego wasn't the type to be bruised that easily, but she wouldn't go looking in that corner again. There was the other problem of a lot of these guys were far younger than she was.

"I will," she said. "When the time is right. I can't offer a kid much of a life right now. That wouldn't be fair to the child or the people of the community."

"Well, I don't think anyone really expects us to do more than we can, you know?"

Arva wasn't there forcing them to get pregnant or anything. In fact, it seemed to him that as long as they were happy, Arva was.

"Oh definitely," Maria said, quick to agree with him. Even if they all were busting their asses to get the medical facility up and running because two girls decided getting pregnant right away was a great idea. There really was something to the saying "It takes a village...".

"That's my point." She shrugged a shoulder. "I wouldn't expect the father of any child I want to have to be part of the raising if they didn't want to. I'm used to relying only on myself."

Reese smiled and nodded.

"Looks like you're going about this the right way, then," he said with a smile. "We're a community, anyway, so I don't think you'd have to worry."

He looked into the fire for a long moment.

"Anyway, I'm exhausted from building all day so I think I'm going to head off to bed. But if you need anything, let me know, yeah?"

"Yeah sure. You too."
