Entry tags:!status: complete, ^date: november 13 2003, character: anthony goldstein, character: marietta edgecombe, character: michael corner

Characters: Michael Corner, Marietta Edgecombe & Anthony Goldstein
Setting: Diagon Alley, Flourish and Blotts, 13 November 2003, 1:23pm
Rating: PG-13 for language probably
Summary: Chance run-in that will probably result in arguing and disgruntled ex-DA friendlies.

Since the Kissed were mostly getting cleaned up by now, Marietta found it a fine time to stroll about Diagon Alley to see the mess they might have made. It was interesting to see something you had been involved in creating chaos across the wizarding world. A lot of the store fronts had been torn to pieces and there were still body parts from them lying around the streets. Apparently the only way to stop them had been to rip them to pieces. How very noble of them; and they called themselves good, yet were okay with ripping apart defenseless bodies who had no brain or souls.

Marietta made her way into Flourish and Blotts which had made it out mostly unscathed it seemed. She wondered if they had any books that mentioned anything about Pandora and was searched through the stacks for anything Gellert Grindelwald when she saw one Anthony Goldstein in the shop as well. She never had much contact with him at the Ministry, but she knew that he was an Obliviator and also an enemy because of his current ties to Dumbledore's Army. Well, if they were current, but considering what was going on, she would not put it past them to not be. Maybe this would be a perfect chance to try and find out just that. Anthony was one of the quiet ones, she remembered back from their days at Hogwarts, though he always ran with Michael Corner who was a loud mouthed, foul creature and Terry Boot who was hard to remember much either way. Yes, Anthony was definitely better to get to when he was alone and Marietta was feeling quite good thanks to her Lady's triumph the past day.

She walked up to Anthony and pulled a random book from the shelf near him, flipping through the pages without actually paying them any mind. "Well hello, Anthony. How are you today? I hope this mess hasn't caused your department too much trouble." It was always better to start with something pleasant if you were fishing for information.

Marietta had been insulted better than this at children's parties. Of course this was Michael Corner so she should know better. But the fact that they were still holding onto hope for the future, that was the most adorable thing. If only she could truly squash those dreams - but no, she didn't need to out herself just yet. Not until things got much more dire.

"Michael...Michael. Honestly, don't you have any better material by now? Although when you work in a bar I suppose you aren't really working around the most quality of people, are you? It's not as if I should have expected you to grow up any since school though. Your best mate barely speaks unless someone pokes him hard enough to make him squeal and the other one - well I can barely even remember that ones name. So where are you going to learn from?"

Marietta looked over at Anthony this time. "Anthony, you may be a bit of a recluse, but you need to learn how to get yourself somewhere on your own before you let this," Marietta gestured to Michael, "drag you all the way to the bottom with him. Although I suppose neither of you will have to worry much longer if Pandora has something to say about it. Let me know how the DA works out for you though. I'm just itching to know how your brilliant band of friendship is going to somehow solve the problem. Oh wait, I won't need you to tell me, will I? I already have someone who can do that."

"I'm fine exactly where I am, thanks ever so." And he ignored the part about not having to worry for much longer - which sounded a lot like death to Anthony, but maybe that was because this conversation had gone on long enough that Anthony was sure Marietta had mentioned death or similar in relation to Pandora on enough occasions for it to stick. Even more so when it was just echoes of his own thoughts.

And was she suggesting that Cho would tell her anything the DA might or might not talk about again? What exactly was the point of that, he started to think. But, then. What exactly was the point of this entire conversation? Or had her entire purpose been to try to knock them down a few notches and then go about her day. He supposed that was somehow more grown up. Right.

"And I'm sure Cho completely appreciates the fact that, despite there not actually being any cause for concern because there isn't anything to tell, you're going around casting doubts on her trustworthiness. Is she actually even still your friend, or are you just pretending she still talks to you to get a rise out of us?" Anthony was almost genuinely curious.

Michael had to say something about Cho, if not because they were at least on friendly terms not and whatever sort of friendship she and Marietta still had, well he had a past with her too. "You've always been full of shite, Marietta, but now you're just lying. Cho may still be friends with you out of whatever loyalties she still holds from the past, but she wouldn't tell you anything at all. She might try to help you if it might save your life - though I'm at a loss as to why, sometimes - but she's not going to give you any bloody information about the DA even if we were doing anything."

It was difficult to try and not give away that they were when she kept saying all that shite and it was possible that Marietta did know they were active through Cho, but Michael did not believe for a second that Cho was telling her what they were up to. That's all she ever did was lie and try to wind people up into giving information. Or just lie to lie, though she did get things right sometimes without knowing it. She may have been better for Slytherin, but Michael could see why she was put in Ravenclaw.

Marietta did hope that these two idiots weren't going to tell Cho that she was saying she wasn't trustworthy. Not that she couldn't just deny it, but that wasn't what she had meant to begin with anyway. She had enough trouble with Cho as it was without them adding to it. Not that they needed to know. She glared at Anthony. "Like you would know anything about it. If you don't remember, I joined the DA with Cho. We've been best friends since school. And if you do not recall, she was still my friend after I turned in your group. So how dare you question her trustworthiness, you prat," she spat at Anthony. Maybe there was still something in her that felt that she needed to defend Cho, just like she had back when she was whinging like a water fountain and everyone had run from her except for Marietta. It was odd for her to show such a side since most people didn't see it very often, not even when she was being attacked herself.

She turned toward Michael, though really she was now tired of dealing with the two of them. She'd already pressed them enough and it was about time that she left. Besides, they were getting annoying and she didn't want to bother with that anymore. "If you weren't doing anything, I suppose there wouldn't be any reason to deny it so much. The two of you protest it too much, even if she weren't telling me anything, an idiot could have figured it out by now. Have a good day, enjoy the nightmares, oh and I hope you live to see tomorrow." Marietta turned and walked away from them and out of the front doors of the shoppe.

Anthony had guessed when he said it that there was a chance he might hit a nerve, but it still surprised him how vehement it was. As it was, Anthony had decided that, for him at least, it took the slightest amount of bite out of her parting words, even if somewhere in the back of his mind, the words she'd said before had gotten to him in a way he hadn't felt for at least a couple of days.

He sighed, almost visibly deflating the moment she was gone from the shop and it was just him and Michael. He ran a hand through his hair, thinking. He'd had a pretty good feeling about that book, but he hadn't exactly put it back where he'd gotten it from as he'd been in the middle of that conversation with Marietta and he didn't think that he was in a focused enough state of mind to search for it again. He supposed at this point he'd be lucky if he still felt like eating lunch.

"If I said that I think I want to skip the meal and instead have a drink, what would you say?" Anthony asked Michael, then. He'd realised that it was the middle of the afternoon and he was actually supposed to go back to work by half past two and also that with a job like his the very idea of drinking was highly irresponsible, but he could there were times when it was just necessary. Between this and the news about his father, it was absolutely necessary.

Michael watched her leave and shook his head, visibly relaxing. He leaned against the stacks behind him and looked at Anthony, raising an eyebrow. It was not as if he was going to reprimand his friend or anything, but it was a bit surprising to hear considering. But he couldn't blame him - Marietta had that sort of effect on people. Michael wondered if her whole family didn't have the same reaction to her. She was just so sodding infuriating and the sad part was that she wanted to be that way to see how people reacted to her - as if that was something fun and exciting.

"I would say that this is the reason you are my best mate," Michael grinned and clapped Anthony on the shoulder and steered him toward the door. Truthfully, he wasn't completely against all the things Marietta had said, but then again he knew that Anthony had not been either, which was probably the biggest problem they were facing now. Michael knew that Anthony had a tendency to be too negative about certain situations and thinking too much about the fact that he might die was certainly one of those things that Michael was annoyed about. Of course Anthony was also annoyed with him too so they were probably even. "I know that Cho has tried to stay friends with her because of the fact that Marietta stuck with her when everyone else didn't, but sometimes you just need to let go. There is something seriously wrong with that woman."

Anthony allowed himself to be led out of the store, deftly ignoring the fact that he could still feel his worry wanting to break through to the surface and instead focusing on the current conversation. And then later on, he could think about all the things he needed to work on, and that was just the way he had to keep going. Maybe, if he had time, he could make something for Michael to realise his... usefulness, he guessed was the word. Otherwise, they'd be having a lot more arguments in the future and Anthony was not fond of the idea.

There was probably a joke Anthony might've attempted to make in regards to the reasons behind their friendship, but it just didn't seem like a good idea in light of some of the things Marietta had said not five minutes ago, so Anthony instead focused on the Cho part. "Maybe she just hasn't realised it yet?" he suggested. He didn't think it was necessary to verbally agree with Michael that there was something off about Marietta, since it was pretty evident to him. "Sometimes it takes a person a while to realise they're not looking at someone else accurately."

Michael shrugged. "I dunno. I haven't talked to her much recently so I'm not really certain how she sees Marietta these days. I know back then Marietta didn't really show her true self to Cho that often so it was certainly more difficult for her to really dislike her because of that." Michael needed to catch up with Cho sometime outside of the DA to really see how she was doing now that he talked about it.

They made their way to the Leaky since it was the closest place and Michael shoved his hands in his pockets as the walked. He bumped his shoulder against Anthony's as they walked. "Don't worry about it, yeah? She really is full of shite, mate. She makes up half the shite that comes out of her mouth just to see how people will react to it. She never even knows if it will land or not and if she gets anything right it's generally by chance. The only reason she bothers you is because of me - I'm sorry," Michael tacked on, sighing a bit. He hated when things he did drug his friends into negative situations that they did not ask for.

Anthony looked over at Michael briefly before looking away again as he talked. Sure, the things she said was the main reason the thoughts were resurfacing again, but it wasn't as if he'd pushed them down very well to begin with if all it had taken was one conversation with an unpleasant person to have him focusing on it all again.

Even still, he nodded, more as a show for Michael than out of genuinely believing the words he was saying. "I think it helped that I apparently make for an easy target." He didn't feel any certain away about that; he was just stating it as a fact. He'd long ago realised that his tendency to shy away from confrontation if he could wasn't very convenient when it came to confrontational people.

Michael shook his head. "You're not an easy target, mate. She's just completely batty." And it was true to some extent. Marietta was a nutter but some people did consider introverted people to be 'easy targets' whatever that really meant. Michael didn't care though. He wouldn't stand for it no matter what they thought. And okay, maybe if someone had come after Anthony and said he had been involved with Pandora like Lavender said Bianca might have been, Michael would have been just as angry as Justin, but Anthony was his best mate; he knew him backward and forward and there was no room for doubt. If it had been Ernie, Michael would have understood Justin's reaction, but Bianca...well, he just didn't think that Justin was quite as good of friends with her to know her that well. But either way, he understood the sentiment behind it now, considering he'd have done the same for Anthony.

"Forget about her. She's going to talk her way into her own mess. She's always been very good at it. Meanwhile we have some larger to consume and I might just need to drink you under the table." He grinned, trying to brighten the mood because this was never supposed to be an uncomfortable afternoon anyhow.

Anthony wouldn't have expected anything other than for Michael to disagree with him. It was just what he did. Anthony, however, was well aware of the fact that he was very much an "easy target" or sorts. Not that he planned to argue with Michael on it. Some things just were not worth getting into that sort of mess.

"And I will absolutely let you, too," Anthony stated, matter of fact. It wasn't the drinking that was important in this after after all; it was more that Michael happened to be very good at distracting Anthony even when he didn't want to be and Anthony had high hopes that considering he felt quite the opposite at the moment that he wouldn't spare another thought towards the disastrous conversation for the rest of the day.

Well, he could hope.
