Who: Tracey Davis and OPEN
What: Checking In
Where: Diagon Alley/Outside Tracey's flat
When: 12pm Nov. 13
Rating: PG

It was hard to believe it hadn't even been a week yet. Last Saturday, her brother had been killed. She kept waking up every morning hoping it wasn't true. That there had been some kind of mistake, and it was a terrible nightmare like everyone else was having. But then she'd wake up in the spare room at Theodore's house, and she'd be reminded that it was all real.

Tracey had only stayed one day at the hospital, and Theodore had been good enough to take her in. She didn't feel safe going back to her own flat and she had no desire to go home with her mother. The only time she went to see her mother was for John's funeral earlier in the week. That had been the last time she'd left the house. Tracey had cut herself off from everyone except Theodore, and she hadn't wanted to deal with it.

That was until she started getting owls from work reminding her that she only had the weekend left of her break before she had to come back. Maybe the her bosses at the Prophet would have been more sympathetic, if there was less turmoil going on in the Wizarding World. When she'd heard about the living-inferi, it was enough for Tracey to wake herself up and deal with the harsh reality. As much as Tracey appreciated what Theodore was doing for her, she needed to go back to London. She needed to check out her flat, and make sure it was still there after the creature attack yesterday.

Tracey had apparated into London, before going into Diagon Alley. Tracey barely even looked like herself. Her hair was a little unruly today, and Tracey hadn't even bothered with makeup. She wasn't in her usually stylish attire, something something comfortable to cover up. She looked around at some the damage still there and made her way through the alley, her hand firmly on her wand in her pocket. The last time she'd been here.... was last weekend. She'd been leaving the Leaky Cauldron. Tracey was watching everything as she walked down the street in the direction of her flat. She wasn't going to let anyone sneak up on her today.

It was true that Tracey had more of a reason to be sympathetic to Zacharias since he was her cousin. Though she was never very close to Zacharias' father, he was still her uncle by marriage. And John was still Zacharias' cousin. They had their own pain, and their family had been through a lot.

Tracey gratefully took his arm as they kept walking. "It's not far now. We just have to turn to the next block," she said, not bothering to remember if Zacharias had been at her flat before. She was glad that he wasn't asking about how she felt. She was trying to ignore that right now, and try to be normal while out in public. Breaking down was not in the plan today till she was alone again.

He wasn't going to ask, wasn't going to assume how she felt. If she was anything like him, the best thing to feel was numb. And the best way to get to that feeling would be to not have to talk about it. Being the last Smith was a burden enough, now with his mother going a bit more crazy because John Davis was dead, well, it didn't make things any easier.

Zacharias looked around, a bit weary on the off chance one of the living inferi was still around waiting to attack. He might not have been particularly brave, but he supposed he could at least man up enough to stop one of those things from attacking them. That was probably the last thing that Tracey needed now. "This part of the alley doesn't look too bad. Your flat might even be untouched." It wasn't much, but a bit of a good news or even hope couldn't hurt.

Tracey didn't want to feel numb. That's what she feared the most she would turn into, even before John died. But she wanted to be focused, and be able to go back to work and pretend things were normal. And what she wanted the most was to find that woman who killed her brother, and make sure she paid dearly for it.

She hadn't even been around for the attacks yesterday. She was relieved in fact, since who knew what state she'd be in after the terrible week Tracey had already. But looking at the damage in Diagon Alley she could only assume what had happened. "I really hope so. One less problem would be a good thing," Tracey said actually perking up at the sight of her block looking better than the rest.

They finally got up to the steps that lead to her flat, as everything looked good. "So far so good," she said letting go of Zacharias' arm so she could walk up the steps, and took out her wands to undo the locks to the front door, and held it open for Zacharias to follow her inside and to the door of her flat. "I think it's safe to say I won't have to do any damage control," she said undoing the locks on her door and going inside to turn on the lights. She'd have to remember to start adding wards now.

Zacharias pulled his wand out when she did, just to be safe. No need to be blindsided by one of those things waiting inside, even if it didn't seem likely. "Well, that's one thing in your favor." He looked around the flat. While he knew where she lived he hadn't ever been here before and nothing really seemed out of sort that was a good thing.

"Do you have wards up or anything that should be checked?" He didn't really know much about them. Zacharias had always felt that by virtue of living in a less than favorable muggle neighborhood, he didn't have to worry about magical threats. Some of his friends had felt differently and had put up wards for him. However, Tracey lived in a magical community and had recently experienced a rather traumatic situation.

"At least that's something," Tracey said making sure to lock he door once Zacharias was inside. She really had no way of knowing if that strange woman knew where she lived... but it was something she'd been scared of ever since that day, and part of the reason she'd stayed with Theodore. She didn't even know if she could sleep here tonight, or if she'd end up going back to Bristol.

"I don't have any wards up. That's something I'll have to sort out soon," Tracey said going into the kitchen. She immediately filled up her kettle and turned it on. She really wanted tea now. Something to calm her down. "You want a cup of tea now, before we go back out?" Tracey offered and thinking better of it she went over to the fridge and found she did have some irish cream left. "Maybe make it a bit stronger, if you're interested." Tea and liquor did sound lovely right now.

Once they were inside and the door locked behind them, Zacharias decided it was safe to put his wand away. If something was waiting for them, he imagined it would already be upon them now. "Wouldn't Theodore be helpful with that sort of thing?" Certainly if you could break curses, you could handle creating a few wards.

However, he didn't really want to linger on that thought, but rather the offer of tea and something a bit stronger. He might need to go back to work later, but a few drinks at lunch wasn't going to hurt any. "I don't know, do you think you can live up to my Macallen standards?" Maybe it was a bit pathetic, but one of the 'perks' of his father's death was Zacharias had full access to an almost obscene liquor cabinet and it has certainly changed his tastes a bit.

"Yes good idea, he probably would. I'll ask him later," Tracey said. That would be one easy fix to take care of her flat. She went over to the cupboards and took out too cups, and put a tea bag in each, setting them on the kitchen island

She smirked at the question and shook her head. "Sorry, just whatever is left in the fridge standards," Tracey said taking out the Irish cream bottle and a bottle of Vodka she found tucked away. Mental note, liquor store trip as well as groceries. "If you refuse I won't be offended," Tracey said taking a seat at the island waiting for the water to boil.

"Tea with a splash of the Irish Cream might be nice." Even if she said she wouldn't be offended, it was just rude to turn down any offer. And it might make things a bit better a drink shared between them. "Although you might have to restock the cabinets accordingly if you're planning to come back here."

Zacharias crossed over and joined her at the island. "It's not a bad place you have here," he said not sure what else to say and that was a nice sort of neutral comment. And relevant as he was on the market for a new place.

"Then that is what you'll get," she said with a softer smile, but still stayed seated while she waited for the kettle to boil. She looked over at the cabinets when Zacharias mentioned that she'd need to pick up something. "I might go back to Bristol tonight, so groceries can wait," she said.

She smiled at the compliment, and how it was just simple small talk. "Thank you, it's a comfortable little flat. I should have invited you over sooner," Tracey said. But there was no point in regretting. He was here now. She heard the kettle start to ring, but before she poured she looked to Zacharias. "Do you like cream in first or second?" Tracey put the tea bag in her own cup, and poured in the boiling water.

"It's not like you've seen my charming flat in Brixon," he said with careless shrug. Zacharias didn't invite people over and he wasn't really the sort of person that you invited over. He just tended to show up with a standing invitation or not. "Which is probably better for everyone."

He watched her pour the first cut of tea before helping and tossing his tea bag into the second cup. "Cream second, please." Proving that he did sometimes have just a few manners he could call on.

"Well you've never invited me," Tracey said with a laugh since he seemed to be sarcastic. "What's wrong with your flat?" she asked.

She poured water into Zacharias' cup, and handed him a spoon, so he could let the tea steep as long as he wanted. Tracey took care of her own tea, and added a good shot of cream, before stirring. She handed the bottle over to Zacharias so he could add the amount he wanted. "So, you know how my weeks been. What about you?"
