Baptiste Island

Since Gaspar Baptiste found the islands, the Baptiste name has lived on through descendants of the explorer. The family is very wealthy, with international interests and business dealings, and to this day, a portion of all tourism income goes to them.

The island is private, and guarded by private security, which means it's guarded better than any of the other islands, except for maybe Little Eden. The highest point on the island is 120 meters (393 feet), and sitting on the peak is Baptiste Manor, a massive estate which can see the entire island chain from its vantage point.

The only time Baptiste Island was ever "open" was during wartime. Gatestown had an important port for supplies, so batteries were set up on Baptiste Island to defend against any ships trying to enter the center of the archipelago. The island harbors many of its own secrets, but most people know of the extravagance of the manor, since the family often invites guests to the island and hosts some events for the benefit of the islands. There are horse stables, a golf-course, tennis courts, a helipad, etc. It's a fully functional island, and quite large for a private one.

Angel Island

Beach bums, potheads, and surfers unite here. Angel Island is one of the lowest islands in Pala. It has no large hills, little wildlife, and no major resorts. The way the coral reefs are arranged around the island create the best break in Pala, and it's not uncommon for fifteen foot waves to crash just fifty feet away from the shore. Although surfing can be seen all over the islands, with several different break points, Angel Island's southeastern tip experiences the biggest waves in the island change, which is why it has been dubbed Surfer's Point. People from all over the world come to Pala just to ride the waves at Angel Island.

Cabanas, bungalows, and vacation homes have sprung up all over the island as a result of the constant flow of surfers and tourists. Injuries, and even deaths, are fairly common because of the strength of the waves and the shallow coral beneath them, but the danger makes it even more exciting. At night, the island often becomes a party haven for tourists, and its not uncommon to see lights from beach raves or massive bonfires all over the beaches of the island.

Paradise Island

The only island to be completely dedicated to one business, it is home to the Atlantis Resort and Waterpark. It was opened by the Baptiste family in conjunction with a hotel magnate in 1998.

The accommodations include six five-star hotels, including the Royal Towers that boast the "Bridge Suite", one of the top ten most expensive hotel suites in the world at $25,000 a night. Harborside Resort has 392 villas and a harbor-front restaurant. The Cove Atlantis is an all-suite hotel opened in 2008. The most popular attraction is the Dolphin Cay right behind it, in which guests can pay to swim with dolphins. All of the hotels have shuttle service to the Atlantis waterpark and there are daily ferries, seaplanes, and helicopters that transport guests to the other islands if they wish.

The Lovers

Named because of their close proximity, like two lovers about to kiss, the two small islands served as the British navy's training base in Pala until World War I. The North Island remains a small training base for British Navy soldiers, but the U.S. and other British allies have been known to have soldiers stationed there to receive training in underwater operations.

The South Island is a historical site, open to tourists wishing to visit the museum and the batteries set up to defend Gatestown. There are also old British warships set up for people to board and learn about, though none of them are seaworthy.

The Follies

A cluster of little islands, or islets, between Empyrean Island and Little Eden have a dangerous reputation. The water they reside in is shallow with coral reefs. Anything larger than a small boat risks running aground, especially during low-tide. The islands themselves are rocky, and don't harbor much life beyond vegetation and birds, though the largest island has a healthy population of the Devil's Tortoise.

Because of the vibrant marine life of the reefs, the Follies are a popular feeding ground for sharks, and the few attacks that do happen usually happen in the vicinity. It just so happens that The Follies were also the site of most shipwrecks because of their shallow waters, so it's believed by modern treasure seekers that most of the valuable cargo of those ships can still be found. This makes The Follies an attractive diving spot for thrill-seekers and lovers of marine life. It's common for native teenagers to take boats out late at night and jump into the waters as a rite of passage.

Island Traditions

Traditions

Over time, several traditions have come to exist in Pala. They range from island-wide, world famous events, to smaller, less known traditions. Pala also observes the following major holidays: Christmas, Easter, Halloween, New Year's Eve/Day. Islanders may also observe religious traditions of their own. If you have an idea for an event or island tradition, please submit a comment with a description of it!

Pala Carnivale
The largest, most well-known tradition is the carnivale season, which spans the entire month of August in Pala. This is the most tourist heavy period of the year, and the entire city of Gatestown erupts in color and celebrations. Parades happen every weekend, culminating in the largest parade at the end of the month. There are fairs, live events, and the beaches around Gatestown become party central.

The other islands remain relatively untouched, but they do see a larger influx of tourists, too. The partying tends to stay on Empyrean, though, with a few smaller satellite events that take place on Paradise and Angel islands.

Jour de la Mort
The Day of the Dead. Also called Dia de los Muertos, Dia de Finados, etc. It takes place overnight, beginning on November 1st and ending on November 2nd. While it is traditionally a time for families and friends to mourn the dead, in Pala it has become a reason to celebrate, too. Island residents and tourists paint their faces to ward off evil spirits. The main event is the release of sky lanterns to commemorate the dead. The skies above Pala look like they are alive with thousands of glowing jellyfish. After the lantern release, the participants celebrate life and party.

Swim the Follies
This is a rite of passage for many of Pala's youth. The Follies are dangerous for their shallow reefs and their shark population. To "swim the follies" means to be taken out to the cluster of islands at night, and to swim approximately 100 meters in the water, unable to see below you in the water because of the darkness. It's technically illegal because of the amount of accidents and deaths that have occurred, but that hasn't stopped young tourists and residents from giving it a try. If a person successfully completes the swim, he or she receives a wave tattoo and is considered a true Palacian.

Booty Day
September 19. To commemorate the day that the British rooted out the last pirates, the islanders have created Booty Day. Sort of Pala's own Valentine's Day, the idea is that you steal something from a person you like/love/have a crush on, and then gift it to them later. Parties are often thrown, with islanders dressed as pirates, or speaking like pirates. This is a controversial tradition because of the amount of date-rapes, drug-taking, and actual thefts that occur. The island authorities tried to ban it once, but the youth of the island celebrated it, anyway, and the authorities could do nothing to stop it.

Elysium Island

Arcadia has resorts, Empyrean has an urban environment, and Acheron has adventure. Elysium is for those who just really want to relax. It's shores are lined with over-water bungalows, and the interior of the island has a few sugar cane farms. There are no predatory animals on the island, so colorful tropical birds flourish.

Jet-skiis and recreational boats are asked to keep three kilometers away from the shore so that people can enjoy the serenity the island offers. It's a popular honeymooning location, offering privacy and quiet to its guests.

Acheron Island

For the true adventurer, the one who doesn't mind a little bit of danger mixed with their leisure, then Acheron Island is a must. It was one of the few islands to not be named with a heavenly word, but instead after the river that forms the border of Hell. The reason? There are only a couple of beaches near Acheron, but you have to get past the jagged rocks and reefs that protect it.

The island is also a major egg-laying ground for the Pala Sea Snake, which is extremely venomous, and once a year, they all hatch over a week-long period, and on their way out to see, the island crawls with them. The snake isn't the only reptile on the island. It's also a popular spot for turtles and iguanas, too.

Out of all the other islands, the it has the most treacherous plant-life, too. Lantana, which produces dark-colored berries starting in September, is actually fatal if eaten. There is also cowitch, a vine-line plant will cause skin rashes and blindness if it comes in contact with the eyes.

But, the island is very beautiful. It receives the most rainfall out of the other islands for some reason, so streams are always plentiful, waterfalls are always flowing. The island is mostly limestone, so there are plenty of caves to explore, both above ground and underwater. Just make sure the one you go into isn't a snake-pit...

Little Eden

Nearly 25km long, and only 10km at its widest, Little Eden is a haven for wildlife and beauty, but off limits to tourists and citizens. The only people allowed on Little Eden are the people protecting it, and even they avoid its shores. Most of Little Eden's shores are actually jagged cliff-sides, jotted by a few small beaches. The interior of the island is only accessible by entering into Paradise Bay through the narrow gap in the cliffs, which is constantly monitored by island authorities.

There is an underwater cave system leading into the Star Lagoon (so named because it's calm enough to reflect the night sky), but it takes either luck or swimming gear to navigate them into the lagoon. Little Eden has been closed off to the public since the 1950s, but people often try to sneak onto the island.

Because of its inaccessibility, many rumors about the island have surfaced (marijuana farms, sacrificial rituals, pagan societies, etc). None of them have ever been proven, but the locals like to freak tourists out with the local legends.

One frightening fact is that out of all the shark attacks that have happened, the most frequent happen around Little Eden. This may be because of The Follies, which reside in shallow waters and have many coral reefs abundant with sea life, making them popular hunting grounds for predators. The last time anyone tried to swim to Little Eden was in 1998. They were a fifteen year old girl and boy and they only found the boy's life jacket with his left arm still attached to it.

(IC Note: Any player that has a character that attempts to go to Little Eden should know that they forfeit control of that character's fate.)

Arcadia Island

Points of Interest
- Enigma Bay
- Bantam Lagoon
- Utopia Resort & Spa
- Septentrion & Austral Bay

The most popular island for those wanting to get away from an urban environment. Unlike Empyrean Island, there is no large town like Gatestown on Arcadia Island. It is made up entirely of small resorts, fishing communities, and long, gorgeous beaches. There are trails into the hills, as well as an abundance of waterfalls, lush tropical forest, and freshwater pools caused by frequent rain.

The bays are popular wave-running and jet-skiing spots, and are usually dotted with the white triangles of sailboats. Arcadia Island is where the Arcadian Fox originated, though they have been spread out to the other islands, but in much smaller numbers. It is currently an endangered species, with conservation efforts still under way.

Some of the more popular sites of Arcadia are: Enigma Bay, a small bay accessible only by boat. The small beach in the bay is surrounded by cliffs, locking it off from the rest of the island. Bantam Lagoon boasts a 40 foot waterfall, which is a popular jumping spot, despite being prohibited. Utopia Resort and Spa is a clothing-optional resort, and even includes its own private beach and small cove. The small strip of land between the Septentrion and Austral bays hosts popular beach spots and a few resorts, while the bays themselves are popular for fishing and diving further out from shore.

Empyrean Island

Points of Interest
- Gatestown
- Kaboo Nightclub
- Crescent Lake
- Celestial Cavern
- Empyrean Jewel
- Diable and Rainbow Falls
- The Dew Drop

The largest and most populated island, Empyrean is home to the only major township of the islands: Gatestown. The rest of Empyrean is hills, farmland, resorts, and beaches. There is a small lake up in the hills toward the island's southern end, but because of the slope of the hills, the small river flowing from the lake moves down the length of the island toward the north, and through Gatestown before reaching the sea.

The highest point of Empyrean is 320 meters, or 1,050 feet. Gatestown has a small airport, a harbor, and an old port that is mostly bars, restaurants, and tourists shops now, since the islands are no longer major suppliers of sugar cane or tobacco.

The hills are great for exploring, providing beautiful vistas, challenging hikes, and adventure. There are many caves on the islands, abundant wildlife, and lush waterfalls and streams caused by the almost daily rainstorm.

Most of the nightlife in Pala is in Gatestown, which hosts many restaurants, nightclubs, bars, and other entertainment. The rest of the island also has many resorts, such as the Empyrean Jewel, a five-star hotel at the island's southern tip, owned by the Baptiste family.

Supernatural

The supernatural in Pala is based on ritualistic witchcraft. It's not about shooting fireballs, teleporting, etc. Characters may have supernatural gifts, but for the most part, magic should be ritualistic and subtle.

The islands have a long history of witchcraft, dating back to the first explorers that touched on its shores. Some would claim that they gained their power from the islands, not vice-versa. Rumors of ritual sacrifice, even of humans, have plagued the islands for quite some time. Stories of ghosts haunting places with weird or dark histories abound, and it isn't uncommon for reports of strange happenings to surface every now and then.

So, I won't specifically put a limit on supernatural abilities. Each submission will be considered on an individual basis. I will, however, put a limit on supernatural creatures, which may or may not change in the future. No vampires or werewolves at this time, or demons, etc, etc. All characters must be human.

Rules regarding magic:

- ask before you use it against someone else
- characters do not want everyone knowing what they can do, so no flashing it around
- the last things the islanders want to do is scare away the tourists, because they bring in all the money, so be careful not to frighten them too much
- using it as a means to metagame will not be tolerated

An example of supernatural so far:

The Baptiste Family

One example of current magic is the Baptiste Family. Many of its members have an inborn talent. Charlotte Baptiste can sense and communicate with the dead. Christoph can manipulate darkness and light when he gets emotional. Beyond this, the Baptiste family has a Grimoire of spells and rituals that they can draw from in some situations. There are also some disgusting rumors of sacrifice and dark magic used to keep the family wealthy and powerful, but these are superstitious lies conjured by envious minds… ahem…

Welcome to Pala

This is a supernatural roleplaying community set in the fictional location of a tropical island chain called Pala. Players may choose whether to participate in the community via forum, chat, or both.

The Pala Islands (map)

Pala is a British Colony on an archipelago formed over millions of years by volcanic activity. Geologists believe that there were four major volcanoes that contributed to the rise of the islands, but all four have long since died out, leaving the beautiful island cluster in their absence. Because of the lack of volcanic activity, the islands have stopped expanding and rising, and are now actually slowly being eroded away by the sea.

Since the islands formed independently from the mainland, they contain their own eco-system. Many species of animal and insect found in Pala are native and endemic to the islands, such as the black Empyrean marmoset, the endangered Arcadian Fox, and the Devil's Tortoise. It's also one of the few places outside of Southeast Asia where tarsiers thrive. Because of its location in the tropics, rain occurs almost daily, though the storms are usually short, giving way to daylight in less than an hour. For this reason, the islands have many pools, streams, and waterfalls.

The islands have had three different names since they were discovered by French explorers. When they first discovered the islands, they had been untouched by human contact, and so the islands were given names that reflected their heavenly beauty. What the explorers soon discovered was that the islands were surrounded by treacherous reefs, and there were only a few spots for their ships to squeeze in. Tropical storms frequently hound the islands, and the islanders can expect a hurricane to pass through at least once every five years. Most of the "natives" on the island are descended from these early explorers that shipwrecked on the reefs and were forced to live on the islands and survive.

When the population began to expand in the late 1500s, disease broke out and wiped out most of the population. There are rumors of cannibalism, sacrifice, and other unsavory things during this time. It became a place where sailors avoided, if possible, so naturally, pirates took to it. It was a great place to not only hide their treasure, but also find it. The ships that were destroyed by the reefs often had valuable cargo, and to this day, the archipelago remains a popular treasure hunting spot.

The waters surrounding the islands have a vibrant marine life, including dangerous sharks and venomous sea snakes, but attacks are rare now that people know how to avoid them. The snakes are known to live both on land and in the water, but clinics are well-stocked with anti-venom. While the islands have many calm coves and lagoons, the tide can be unpredictable and has cost many people their lives, so islanders know to be careful. Once a year, it usually claims at least one tourist's life.

Island History Timeline

1500s
The islands were officially discovered by French explorer Gaspar Baptiste in 1509 and established as a French colony. Then, it was called "La Porte du Ciel" (Heaven's Gate). The larger islands were quite fertile, and sugar cane, tobacco, and marijuana were early exports.

1600s
After the outbreak of disease that nearly ended living on the islands, agriculture was given up in favor of pirating as the main source if income. The islands gained a mysterious reputation. Ships that went near would not return, and the pirates who lived on the islands began to call it "Devil's End" instead of its given name. Though control of the islands would often switch hands, pirates continued to use the island chain as their headquarters through the late 1700s.

1700s
Even in the late 1700s, when the British took it over and renamed the archipelago "Pala", many people still referred to the area as Devil's End. After the pirates were rooted, and since the French seemed to have lost interest, the islands became an official British colony and remain so to this day.

1800s
Agriculture returned to the large islands in the 1800s. Tobacco and marijuana were in higher demand, but sugar cane was also a staple crop. The township of Gatestown really boomed and began to grow, and the islands were used as a base for the navy, though their strategic value would be diminished over time as the British lost control of many other colonies in the area.

1900s
Marijuana was outlawed in the early 1900s and growth of it, except on some of the private islands and for illegal purposes, ceased in Pala. Because travel was becoming easier, several resorts opened on the islands and tourism began to take over as the main driver for the economy. With the exception of Little Eden and its satellite islands, every island has a resort on it. Little Eden, starting in the 50s, became a nature preserve and is completely closed off to the public. The stray tourist will risk it every now and then, but several have not returned, a few have been killed by the "wildlife" on the island, or have been caught by island authorities. Being caught trying to go to Little Eden is a hefty fine for island natives, and a permanent ban from Pala for any tourists.

2000s
Though the islands have thrived from tourism, many of its residents tend to appear poor. While many wealthy people have summer estates, condos, or time-shares, the actual citizens tend to be working class, living in small homes, and fishing for food. Theft is a common problem, as well as domestic violence, though the main source of trouble is caused by bored teenagers doing drugs or engaging in acts of vandalism.

Population & Demographics

The official population is 57,000, but during peak tourism season can balloon up to 90,000. Most of the population resides in Gatestown, but the exact number of people on the islands is never really known, since people are coming and leaving all the time. There are also rumored to be small "colonies" of illegal residents that live on the smaller islands, or have just managed to stay on the larger islands unnoticed.

The population of Pala is 58% caucasian, 23% Hispanic, 16% African-American. The other 3% covers Asian, Middle-Eastern, and other ethnicities. Racism is usually not a problem, though, since people live in such close proximity to each other and don't generally want to have trouble with neighbors they can't get away from.

Rules

1. At this time, registration is required for play in the chat and forum.

2. Only five characters per player. In order to make another, you must find some way to get rid of another character. Not just delete it, but kill it, put it in a coma, move away...something playable.

3. Photo-realistic avatars only. No anime, cartoons, etc.

4. The islands cannot be destroyed or blown up. Major events that would effect the plots and happenings of other characters (hurricanes, earthquakes, terrorism, etc) must be put to a vote on the board, so that people may choose if they want it to happen. There is one exception: the administrator may choose to allow something to happen if it's determined to be a fun surprise for the players and the vote might ruin the spontaneity of it.

5. Profiles are not required, but encouraged, just so people have an idea who they're playing with. At least copy and paste the information you submitted for the character so others can see.

6. If you want to kill a character, the player must give permission first, unless you can justify to an admin that it was necessary and the situation warranted it. That being said, do not get your character into a situation that can only end in death if you don't want to lose that character.

7. Godmoding - do I really have to explain it? Don't do it.

8. OOC homophobia, religious intolerance, racism, gender discrimination, etc, will not be tolerated.

9. Respect each other! It's escape through roleplay, not the real world, so keep your behind-the-scenes drama out of the play, and just enjoy losing yourself in the world of pretend! No need to take it too seriously.

10. Little Eden is currently off limits for RP due to plot reasons. This may change later.

11. Please follow this link before you make an IC post, so that you understand the format, and may copy and paste as you choose.
