avoiding a headache
who: azi and open
where: helios deck-near the railing
when: late afternoon
Azi wasn't necessarily a morning person. Most of the work he did was late at night, around 3amish, and so mornings weren't his thing. Therefore it wasn't until after noon that he wandered out of his ridiculously lavish room to seek out something resembling sunshine. It took him a while too, which was gently irritating him, but then he hadn't been in the best of moods to begin with, what with having to have been checked in early. Which required coherency of some description.
His annoyance was also due directly to the fact that he'd been locked in his room the entire time since arriving, trying to decipher every ward that happened to be there. What they were for, where they were from, if any of them clashed and cancelled each other out, if they were even done correctly--so he'd been at it for-fucking-ever. He'd dropped off eventually but he still had some shit to try and figure out. He was just giving himself a bit of a break before he went back to it. It was that or give in to the headache that was threatening. He wasn't especially happy to be bogged down with a headache just yet.
So he was pausing for a smoke, and a look around. Which had turned into a smoke and a lean-on-the-railing, and much less anything ambulatory. Either way he was paying spectacularly little attention to anything or anyone around him, and he was merely looking out over the expanse of ocean, letting his mind wander.
Indulgence. Ella paused before stepping into her assigned room, trying to prepare herself for what she would see when opening the door. She took a deep breath and unlocked the door. She opened the door and immediately squealed, a huge grin on her face.
The room was perfect, absolutely perfect. It was very plush and all the furniture was high end, the perfect necessity for relaxing and indulgence. The walls were painted black and the floors were covered in a thick white shag carpet, which Ella had to immediately take off her shoes and sink her toes into. There were bold splashes of hot pink in the accessories and art work. The bathroom was a mini-spa retreat with it's soaking tub and lush pink bath towels.
After surveying every inch of her room, Ella unpacked. Being the neat freak that she was, everything had to be put away in it's proper place. Once her things were unpacked, Ella sat on the zebra striped sofa (which was curved and majorly uncomfortable) and surveyed the map of the ship. She decided to go exploring and she quickly decided she wanted to go up, to take advantage of the best views.
Grabbing her key, Ella headed toward the bank of elevators that would lead her up to the Helios deck. She noted that as she walked through the halls, she didn't see any other passengers. She got off the elevator and wondered around the deck, taking stock of the different attractions and most importantly the view. She was starting to feel oddly creeped out that she hadn't run into anyone yet when she saw a lone figure leaning up against a railing, smoking a cigarette. Ella bounded over to him and gave him a winning smile.
"A person! You're the first person I've seen since I've boarded this ship. I was starting to get a little freaked out. And then I found you!" Ella was babbling, she was aware. It was just relief at having found someone to talk to that was making her babble.
She held her hand out to the guy. "I'm Ella. I'm from Georgia. It's nice to meet you!"
He was being spoken to. So, he glanced over, then arched an eyebrow as she rambled. Quirking a little half smile, he took a drag and nodded. "I am in fact, a person." he confirmed for her. "You're the first person I've seen as well." He just had been enjoying the lack of company, but he wasn't enough of an asshole to say that. "I'm Anasazi, from...pretty much all over the place. You can call me Azi." he told her, since the one thing he'd learned in life was that pretty much no one could pronounce his name.
When he didn't take her hand, Ella let it fall naturally to the railing. She tilted her head and her brow furrowed as she tried to pronounce his name. "Ana...sa...zi?" She giggled, "I'm sure I just butchered that. Azi, it is!" She glanced out at the ocean and then back to his face. "How'd you get such an odd name?"
"You got it closer than some people." Azi told her. "It's native american. So yeah, stick with Azi, it'll be easiest for everyone. But points for trying, as well." he added with an easy laid back smile. "I got the name because my father was part of the tribe, or his ancestors were." he explained. "How about you? Ella is a cute name. Is it short for anything?"
"Nope, just Ella," she replied. "It can be a little too cutesy for my taste, but whatever - can't change it now." She turned and looked out toward the water, leaning over the rail to let her hair blow in the breeze. She turned her head back to Azi, her hair now whipping in her face. "Is this your first cruise?"
"You can always change it." Azi said. "Make something up for yourself, and go with it. People do it all the time. Might be cathartic." he told her. Then he had to figure out what he was going to answer to her question. Not really? Yes, but only if you discount his mother's story about his birth? He wasn't sure. "First one like this." he said, looking around. "What's your room like?" he asked, because he somehow doubted all of them were covered in spiritual wardings.
Ella thought about his suggestion to change her name. "I would have no clue what to change my name to. What do I look like to you?" She laughed. "I've always just been Ella...I can't imagine being anyone else."
Ella moved so her back was against the railing, one hand holding her hair away from her face. "My room? The name is called Indulgence. It's quite sexy - all black and white and pink. Doesn't fit me at all, but I love it!"
"What's your room like?" She was quite certain that he was not in a black, white and pink room.
Azi took a last drag from his cigarette, then stood back to eye her critically, tossing the butt overboard. "You look like...." he staid, drawing the word out to give himself time. "...something classic. Like an older world name. Alexandra, or Charlotte, or something. Something not too odd or anything. You would have to go with the full name though. No short nicknames." he decided.
"It doesn't fit you but you love it. interesting. Mine's...interesting." he said, not sure how to word it. Particularly since most of the time when he said what it was he did, people looked at him as if he were insane. Not that he ever lied about it, or hid it. Because he wasn't insane. People were just ignorant, but generally he didn't drop it on people within the first five minutes. "It's covered in wards." he said, because she'd asked, and oh well. First five minutes it was.
Ella shivered slightly under his gaze. She blushed a little and ducked her head. "Hmm, an older name, huh? I like Alexandra...Charlotte is too Southern. That's one thing I like about my name is that it's not too typically Southern."
She cocked her head, giving him a curious look. "What are wards?"
"Alexandra I like too. Maybe I'll just call you that." Azi said, occasionally giving into his tendency to randomly rename people. He'd done it before. Then he paused, and shrugged, leaning against the rail again.
"Wards. Symbols or spelled components that are meant to protect against something." Azi explained. "Generally, they're much older civilization's creations. I've counted at least six different cultures that they've been drawing from in my room so far. I am one protected son of a bitch. Should any Keres show up? I'll be fine."
Ella flushed slightly, liking the idea that he had given her a new name. "Well, I have no other name for you than Azi. Azi just ...fits."
Wha? Was Azi speaking Greek with all the ward and Keres stuff? Ella was confused. "Wards? I still don't have a clue what you're talking about. But, I guess it's a good thing you're protected? Although, how much danger can there be on a ship?"
