Miles was reading Hamlet, again. He was sitting in the hallway, a place he had made his own over time. It was his way of seeing the coming and goings of people. He liked knowing where people were and what they were doing where. He made him feel secure to see every angle of things. Less surprises that way. Miles hated surprises. A lot. Lucky, the puppy he had found a week earlier, was playing tug-of-war with a rope that Miles had made for him; one of Miles' hands was on the other end of it, simply holding on so the pup could chew and pull all he liked.
Since the war was over, actually before that, Miles had been deeply concerned for the last two women he had seen the slavers bring in just before the fighting broke out. He knew their faces, they were burned into his brain. All of them were burned into his brain, side effect of having his memory. But these two came from this town, and Miles had worried about whether or not they had been saved, like he had been. He had over heard them talking a little bit and was lucky enough to hear them say their names, Honey and Scarlet. Miles had replayed their faces and names over and over in his head, fearing the worst for him and hoping for the best. But he's never really know unless he was able to find out.
The only way to do that was to ask permission to explore the town, look at people and see if he found them among the other tribes. Miles already knew they weren't in the Tenskwatawa tribe, he had met everyone there and knew their faces. So he had to venture out if he was ever going to get his answers. In order to do that, he had to ask Lou if he could go. But he wasn't sure if he should just come out and ask, or wait until she came to him and spoke to him. He was still getting used to the right to speak 'freely' without having to be spoken to first.
So sat in the hallway and waited to at least see Lou before making a decision.
