Miles had seen the man coming up to him. That was the point of sitting in the hallway. Lucky was pulling on the rope and tripped over his own back foot and ended up rolling over onto his back, pawing at the dangling rope over his head. Miles couldn't help but smile at the adorableness of the pup. Honestly, if that pup wasn't in his life, Miles would have such a hard time trying to be happy.
It was adjustment being free from the slavers. There were more pros than cons, obviously, but it's human nature to take a period of adjustment when transitioning so swiftly from one way of living to another, especially when they're two different styles of living: being a submissive slave to actually being a free person who was allowed to have a mind of his own. Miles had to reacquaint himself with the ability to do things on his own without having to constantly ask for permission or approval or help, the ability to have leisure time and not worry about being beaten or whipped for it. Lucky, and his simplicity of living helped keep Miles calm. He had another life to focus on instead of his own, so it was a pleasant distraction at times.
Miles gave a small grin at the man, Theo was his name, when it was mentioned that he was reading a classic. "It's seen me through so very rough times in my life," he answered. Miles wanted to say more, but wasn't sure what. Lucky got up and sniffed Theo's foot on the floor.
