WHO: JJ van der Berg, Nicholas Rowland, and Jesse, Jayden, Adrian and Isaiah Delacroix. Also ghosts
WHAT: The Daddy
WHEN: Monday evening
WHERE: Their house
WARNINGS: Ghosts and sadness

JJ headed into the kitchen, looking pale and uncomfortable. "Urgh, I can't stop puking," she sighed. "Being pregnant is kind of shit."

Jayden gave her a sympathetic look and moved to help her over to the table. "Sit here, I'll get you something to drink, okay? You want me to get Nick and Jesse?" He went to fetch some water as she nodded. When he handed over the water, she smiled warily at him.

"Thanks, Jayden. You're amazing."

"Nah, I just like you," he said with a grin and a wink, and he darted off to find his brother and Nicholas.

Isaiah turned up before his older brother, folding himself into a chair across from JJ. "I'd offer to help somehow, but I have no idea how, beyond making tea," he said, smiling slightly. "But, as they say, he can be taught."

Jesse showed up not long after that, sitting himself down next to JJ. "Anything I can do, cher?" he asked, running one hand lightly over her back.

JJ chuckled at Isaiah and she sipped at her water. "Yeah, probably can't put the baby in you, hmmm?" she joked. Then Jesse was there and she grinned over at him. "I'm okay, just bitching." She rested her hands on her belly and sighed. "You know the morning sickness crap was supposed to be over with by now."

"Not unless I become a seahorse," Isaiah deadpanned.

"Well I think you're entitled," Jesse said, smiling softly at her. "You are growing a human, after all. And if those books are anything to go by, it shouldn't be too much longer, hopefully."

Isaiah was about to say something else, but a flicker out of the corner of his eye caught his attention instead. But when he turned his head, it was gone. He was about to shrug and turn back, when the radio flipped on. By itself. And that was definitely odd. He got up to turn it off, and the moment he did, the TV clicked on.

"Isaiah?" Jesse called. "Pick one or the other, man, come on."

"Jesse, it's...I'm not doing this," Isaiah protested, puzzled and a bit freaked. He reached out to turn the TV off, and when he straightened, he saw his father reflected in the glass. He let out a startled yell and fell over, scrambling crab-like backwards to get away from him.

"Isaiah?" Jesse called again, concern pulling him from his chair. He froze briefly in the doorway to the living room, then bent down and yanked Isaiah, hard, up off the floor and behind him into the kitchen. "I am not fucking dealing with this again," he growled.

Jayden loped into the kitchen, followed by Nicholas, just in time to see Jesse yank Isaiah up hard. "Hey!" Jayden called out, rushing forward towards his brothers. "What's happening?!"

JJ was standing now too, having heard Isaiah's cry. What the hell was going on?

Jesse moved into the doorway, trying to put himself between his brothers and the thing that looked like their father as much as he could. "I don't know what you are, or what you want," he told the apparition. "But you get the fuck out of my house."

"But it's not really yours, is it?" And there was that voice that always made Jesse flinch. "You live here with those...people, dragging my sons into your deviancy-"

Jesse let out a wordless yell of rage, picking up his coffee mug and throwing it at the shade. It sailed right through and crashed against the wall, sending shards everywhere.

His father snorted. "How, exactly, are you going to hurt a dead man?" he asked. "Pathetic. But then, I expected that from you."

Jayden herd the voice before he really saw his father, and he froze there in the hallway, his eyes wide. Nicholas dashed forward to stand at Jesse's side as the other man hurled a cup at the shade.

"Holy shit," Nicholas muttered as the thing that looked like Jesse's father taunted them. He grabbed his phone and immediately called Michael, never tearing his eyes off Richard.

Jayden, for his part, eased forward until he caught sight of the ghost too, and squeaked in horror.

Isaiah started to tremble behind Jesse. Even in death, they couldn't escape their father, and that was the thing that terrified him the most.

Jesse clamped one hand onto Jayden's shoulder, moving him further behind him and out of the shade's line of sight.

"No, by all means, let me see him," Richard said. "Let me look at how far he's fallen, seeing as how he's here in this den of iniquity. No doubt doing absolutely nothing with himself."

"You shut the fuck up," Jesse growled. "You have no right to even look at him, let alone any of us, after how you've treated us."

"I should have thrown you out long before I did," Richard spat. "Might have saved the little ones from your taint."

Adrian had been spared the beginning of the debacle, but he could hardly ignore the yelling going on in the living room, so he rushed downstairs to catch his father insulting Jesse. And without knowing a single thing about what was going on, he let out a howl of rage at what he was hearing, and rushed forward to try to tackle Richard. Instead he passed right through the shade, crashing into the wall on the other side.

"Ade!" Isaiah shouted, rushing out from behind Jesse to check on his brother.

Richard glowered at the both of them, and as he did, the lights flickered, and the radio crackled to staticky life, filling the room with a fuzzy version of 'When The Man Comes Around'.

"I've had this nightmare before, strangely enough," Jesse said. "But it usually involved me strangling you, something I always wanted to do, but never got the chance." He turned to Nicholas, a thought striking him. "We don't know any exorcists, do we?"

"As if one of those charlatans could get rid of me," Richard said, voice full of contempt.

Adrian had connected with the wall hard, but he wasn't seriously hurt. He grabbed Isaiah's hand from his spot on the floor and stared at the apparition of their father.

From the kitchen, JJ inched into the room, hiding behind Nicholas who was still trying to get ahold of Michael. "I don't know if we know an exorcist, but we know an angel. Which s more than you can say," he hissed at Richard.

"Stop," Jayden whispered, wishing he could run and hide. "Get out!" he screamed at Richard.

"As if one of God's angels would deign to associate with the likes of you," Richard said dismissively. "And even if you do, where is he? Furthermore, what would he even do?"

"Extract your dead, unwelcome ass from our house?" Jesse said dryly.

"Don't you sass me, boy," Richard said sharply. The bulbs in the living room lamp blew, the radio squealed and shot sparks before abruptly dying, and the security floodlights outside suddenly failed, plunging the backyard into darkness.

"OK, well...that's deeply unsettling," Isaiah muttered, helping Adrian to stand.

"All it means is he's a big, dead, bully, who can't hit me like he so desperately wants to, so he's going to settle for destroying the electrical in the house," Jesse replied, with enough contempt for his father in his voice to rival Richard's earlier tone. Richard made his feelings on this statement known, by overloading the microwave to Jesse's right. It started belching smoke and giving off a foul smell of burnt plastic, but Jesse held his ground.

Jesse may have held his ground, but JJ shrieked and Nicholas went to hold her. "Stop it, she's pregnant!" he bellowed at the ghost.

Jayden edged forward until he had taken Jesse's hand. At least then he had something to hold on to while everything around them turned to absolute shit. "Hit me," he finally challenged the ghost, out of nowhere. "You hit me, you asshole!"

"And if you hurt them, I'll make your afterlife hell," Jesse promised. "Even if it takes me the rest of my own life."

He looked over at Jayden, feeling a bit shocked. It seemed so out of character for Jayden to say or do anything like this, and while he was proud of his brother for standing up to the ghost of their father, he was not going to let anything happen to him while he was still breathing.

"You get anywhere near him, and you will be sorry," he promised. Richard, seemingly for the twisted thrill of it, walked right through Jesse to peer at his youngest son. "Fuck fuck fuck, that was so wrong on so many levels," he moaned, hopping around like that would somehow make everything better.

Richard, meanwhile, was addressing Jayden. "So it seems you've grown a spine, finally," he said, sounding a tiny bit impressed, almost in spite of himself. "About damn time, too, your mother always liked to coddle you and Isaiah. Such a mistake. It was rather a relief to be rid of her, honestly."

"I am so beyond done with this," Jesse said, seething. He started tearing open the kitchen cupboards, until he finally found a container of salt. He opened it and poured some into his hand, then tossed it at Richard. It sailed right through him and landed on the carpet, and Richard raised an eyebrow at him, as did Isaiah.

"It worked on Supernatural," Jesse muttered.

"Yes, and as we all know, TV never lies," Isaiah said, rolling his eyes in a fond fashion.

Jayden had his own issues with his mother, but he was still pissed off his father dared say such a thing. "Fuck you!" he yelled, clenching his fists at the apparition.

"Jay," Adrian said softly, "just ignore him. It's clear all he can do is try to be a prick." Adrian, who had always been his father's golden child, wished he had stood up to his father more while the man was alive. "You're powerless here, Dad," he said to the ghost.

JJ reached out trying to grab Jesse and pull him towards her and Nicholas. "I liked the salt thing," she said quietly.

Richard looked like he would have very much liked to have slapped Jayden, but he knew it wouldn't do any good, since things just went right through him, and he went right through people. The lights in the kitchen all blew instead, raining little glass shards down onto the people in the room.

He whirled on Adrian, disappointment and anger clear on his face. "Perhaps my biggest disappointment of all, after your older brother," he sighed. "You were doing so well, Adrian. And you threw it all away, and for what?"

Jesse buried his face in her hair. "I'm not sure what possessed me to do that," he admitted quietly, the faint trace of a laugh in his voice. "Thought I might as well try something."

Adrian arched his eyebrows at his father's ghost. "Your biggest disappointment? I allowed myself to be raped over and over again because I feared you would throw me out. That is how badly you failed at being a father! You disappoint me!"

It was the first time Jayden had heard Adrian ever be so up front about the things that had happened to him, and suddenly he felt like he should be protecting Adrian. It seemed like he had everything in hand though...

JJ just clung to Jesse's hand, shaking the glass from her hair. Oh god, what if the ghost figured out how to hurt them and he killed the baby. "Jesse, the baby," she whispered to him, hoping like fuck that Richard was occupied by Adrian and he hadn't heard.

Instead of replying, Richard went very quiet. Then, without any warning, the XBox rose into the air and flung itself directly into Adrian's stomach.

"Ade!" Isaiah cried again. The console flew back toward him now, and the edge caught him across the face, sending him tumbling to the floor. It hurt like a bitch, but he picked himself up as best he could, and went to check on Adrian.

Jesse tucked JJ into his side as much as he could, trying to at least turn the front of her body away from his father's wrath. "Shh," he said soothingly in her ear. "He's not going to hurt the baby, we won't let him."

Adrian cried out in shock and pain and he doubled over, his hands on his stomach. "Isaiah!" he cried out when the console went towards his brother as well. He went to the floor beside Isaiah and screamed at his father, "leave him alone!"

Jayden cried out in horror and he tried to duck behind a sofa, lest Richard try to hurt him too.

JJ gasped as the assault turned physical. "I have to get out of here!"

Jesse clamped one hand onto Nicholas' arm, dragging him over. "Nicky. Cher," he whispered hurriedly in his ear. "Take JJ, get the car, get one of the bikes, I don't care, but get her as far away from here as you possibly can." Beyond him, there came the sound of glass breaking, as the XBox flew through a window and into the backyard. "Go now, OK? I love you. Be safe."

Then he stepped into the living room and yelled, "Hey! You son of a bitch! Pick on someone your own size!"

"Jesse, no," Isaiah breathed from his spot by the wall. "That's what he wants-"

"Better me than any of you," Jesse said, not looking at any of them. Richard used that moment to get right up in his face. Jesse stared into those cold blue eyes, the way he'd done so many times before. "Picking on children," he spat. "Just shows what a coward you were, and are."

The lamp on the end table swung itself at Jesse's head, and he narrowly missed it fracturing his skull, by ducking just in time.

Nicholas didn't need to be told twice. And while he hated that he was leaving the Delacroixs alone with their arsehole of a father, JJ was pregnant. They needed to look after her first. He whisked her out the door and into the car without looking back.

"JESSE!" Jayden screamed as Richard tried to brain his brother.

"Stay where you are!" Adrian instructed Jayden, and he moved so he was between Isaiah and Richard. "Jesse, man, don't let him hurt you."

Jesse watched them go, and he didn't unclench until he heard the garage door closing again. At least JJ and the baby were on their way somewhere safe, and that was one less thing on his mind.

Jesse placed himself in front of Jayden, between him and Richard. There was never any other course of action, in his mind. "Like I said before, Ade," he said, staring into the eyes of the apparition. "Better me than any of you."

The power cord to the fallen lamp rose into the air, clotheslining him at the knees, and he fell. He hit the floor hard, but pushed himself back up onto his feet and stood in front of Jayden again. "You think that's going to hurt me?" he spat. "You bastard. I was homeless at 17. I've slept on park benches, under bridges, and on the ground. I turned tricks up against alley walls to put food in my mouth. I got beat up for what little I didn't have. So you do your worst."

"That is not better!" Adrian hissed, rising up to join Jesse's side. He couldn't very well let Jesse just take all of this on his own.

While Jesse described the shit he had been through, Adrian winced in horror. "That's your failure as well!" he yelled at Richard. "You should have protected him from that but you didn't. Do your worst, but you're doing it to both of us."

Jayden wanted to join them, but he was too scared so he stayed where he was, cowering.

Jesse turned to look at Adrian. "For a given definition of better, it is," he said dryly. "I can deal with getting hurt. I can't deal with any of you getting hurt anymore, OK? I've had enough of it to last a lifetime, we all have. So if he wants to destroy our house some more, fine. Stuff can be replaced. You three can't be."

Richard looked over for the third time at the fallen lamp. The cord twitched, but it didn't lift off the floor again. He frowned, but still, nothing happened.

"Jesse, did you say a code phrase or something?" Isaiah wanted to know.

"I have absolutely no idea," Jesse answered.

Richard let out a wordless yell of rage, and the kitchen windows near Jesse and Adrian shattered. Glass flew outward and struck Jesse, cutting his face and hands.

"Fuck, shit!" Adrian hissed, covering his own face so none of the glass hit him. He heard Jayden cry out and just knew he'd been cut as well.

"You are such a worthless asshole!" Adrian screamed at his father before turning to Jesse. "Shit, how bad is it? Christ, do you think we can get to the hospital?"

"I don't know, but I vote that we try," Jesse replied. He pulled the keys to their SUV out of his pocket and tossed them to Isaiah, who was closest to the door leading to the garage. Isaiah caught them and was gone in a flash, the door slamming behind him before Richard had even finished turning around.

"Jay, get over here!" he shouted, wiping some blood out of his eyes. "If we're going to make a break for it, we need to do it now, while he can't throw objects. I'm not going to stick around and wait to see if he gets that power back."

Isaiah leaned on the horn outside, he'd driven the SUV around to the back of the house, leaping the curb and driving onto the lawn to get closer to the back door.He figured he'd be forgiven, all things considered. Jesse grabbed his brother's hands and dragged them toward the door, determined to put as much distance as possible between Richard and them.

Despite the pain he was in by the glass littering his skin, Jayden jumped up and let Jesse pull him towards the door and outside.

Adrian darted ahead, pulling the door open so he could push Jayden inside before himself. Once they were all in, Adrian turned to Jayden to assess the state his little brother was in. There was glass in his face, but none of the cuts looked too deep, and his eyes, thankfully, had been spared. "Shit," he breathed, hoping somehow that the ghost couldn't follow them.

Jesse threw himself into the front seat beside Isaiah, white-knuckling the dashboard as they drove away. There were pieces of glass embedded in his hands and face, but he ignored them for now, opting instead to turn around and see how his brothers were doing.

"We need to go get stitched up," he said, wincing as something pulled in his face and deepened a cut. He pulled up the nearest hospital on his GPS, and started reading directions out to Isaiah. "And once we get there, I want to call Nicholas and JJ, make sure they're alright. We'll figure out what to do next from there."
