According to Beelzebub, it had taken him two days of searching before he thought to reach out to Asterion over the internet. Two days when Erato was stuck, suffering even more. Two days Beelzebub was going to charge Erato more for, since he had put in a lot of effort. The moment the demon had relayed the information, however, he was out of the picture and Asterion was rushing towards the asylum on Long Island.

He had considered reaching out for backup, but no matter how hard Beelzebub promised it wasn’t a trap, it was likely a trap. And Asterion didn’t want to put anyone else in that position. If it was a trap, then it was on him and him alone. And…at least he would be with Erato? He could handle torture if he was with Erato.

He parked Ariadne’s car well up the drive because he didn’t want to alert Hybris that he was coming. Then he stole on foot up to the asylum, sticking to the shadows. Asterion was amazingly stealthy for such a large person, and he had excellent night vision, which helped him navigate the night without causing a ruckus.

He peered into a window near the door, to see Hybris standing in the middle of the room, leaning over a hunched form in a wheelchair. The person was blindfolded (so the thought) and strapped into a straight jacket, and their red hair hung limply-

Oh god, it was Erato. Asterion’s stomach roiled and his blood boiled to see her like that.

Hybris, however, was having a great time. “Hey, Muse!” Hybris said, poking her to try to get a reaction. “Erato! Fuck’s sake, pay attention to me, or I burn you!”

“You teach me now how cruel you’ve been—cruel and false–” Erato mumbled and groaned, rolling her head back, her mind still somehow searching for some chink of light, a glow to give her hope instead of this eternal, cold, miserable, painful darkness. She had no concept of the passing of time in this hell, no idea what the outside world was like. Was it Spring out there? Were the blossoms coming out? The delicate pink petals blowing on the wind? The scent of opening flowers and new leaves and rich, soft earth? Or was it a frozen winter, frozen like her numb toes, numb hands, cold breath in that mildewed cell? There were sparks of pain on her skin where Hybris had branded her.

There was only one escape for her now, and that was the vast landscape of her mind. Every word she had inspired was still in there, and only had to be reached for to give her words when she had none of her own. “Why did you despise me?” she breathed. “Why did you betray your own heart, Cathy? I have not one word of comfort.”

Hybris raised her eyebrows up to her hairline because Erato was talking gibberish. “What? What is- Who the fuck is Cathy?”

She never got to find out because Asterion splintered through the door, sending bits of wood flying every which way. He roared in fury, sounding inhuman as he charged at Hybris like an enraged bull. She barely got out a scream before he picked her up into his arms and brought her down onto his leg, snapping her back in two. He let out another scream, and he grabbed her head, so small in his hands, and twisted it, giving her body a little shake until it separated, falling wetly to the ground, her head still in his hands. And he stood, breathing hard and heavy, shaking with anger, over a dead Hybris.

	Asterion had no idea what any of that meant, and it was hardly a direction to go in here. “What?” he asked her, and then he felt like maybe asking her was a little much right now. “I- We’ll go to my car,” he said slowly. “I’m taking you out of here.
