WHO: Asterion, Erato and Hybris - then Apollo
WHEN: Backdated to April 20th
WHERE: The Torture Asylum
WHAT: RESCUE
WARNINGS: TBA but aftermath of torture and Asterion killing Hybris

According to Beelzebub, it had taken him two days of searching before he thought to reach out to Asterion over the internet. Two days when Erato was stuck, suffering even more. Two days Beelzebub was going to charge Erato more for, since he had put in a lot of effort. The moment the demon had relayed the information, however, he was out of the picture and Asterion was rushing towards the asylum on Long Island.

He had considered reaching out for backup, but no matter how hard Beelzebub promised it wasn’t a trap, it was likely a trap. And Asterion didn’t want to put anyone else in that position. If it was a trap, then it was on him and him alone. And…at least he would be with Erato? He could handle torture if he was with Erato.

He parked Ariadne’s car well up the drive because he didn’t want to alert Hybris that he was coming. Then he stole on foot up to the asylum, sticking to the shadows. Asterion was amazingly stealthy for such a large person, and he had excellent night vision, which helped him navigate the night without causing a ruckus.

He peered into a window near the door, to see Hybris standing in the middle of the room, leaning over a hunched form in a wheelchair. The person was blindfolded (so the thought) and strapped into a straight jacket, and their red hair hung limply-

Oh god, it was Erato. Asterion’s stomach roiled and his blood boiled to see her like that.

Hybris, however, was having a great time. “Hey, Muse!” Hybris said, poking her to try to get a reaction. “Erato! Fuck’s sake, pay attention to me, or I burn you!”

Right, more of that. Asterion started the car up and pulled out, driving for about ten minutes until he found a place where he could pull off the road and tuck into some trees. He left the car running for the heat, and he climbed into the back of the car with Erato, to cradle her while he pulled out his phone and dialled Apollo’s number.

It was late, and the lateness of the hour was pounding home how late he was. The old Apollo would never be this late to rescue a Muse. The old god he used to be, back when the world was right. In the old land. With his old powers. His rightful strength. He had no counter for how much he lacked, in the here and now. The fates said he would not find Erato and he had no power to change that and it grated. It shredded. It destroyed. It made him want to destroy.

He was like a mortal, raging against the whim of the fates, and he hated it. Something had to be done. Something to stop this happening again. Because it would. Which Muse next? Or would something happen to Cin? Fuck, he'd tear the world apart, only, the world refused to let him.

Fuck.

He was pacing his balcony when the call came through. A lion in a cage. Golden, glorious, powerful, and caged nonetheless. The sight of the minotaur's name on his phone shot him through with feeling a whole sort of way – that Erato was apparently so fond of that beast, ugh – but he answered the call in seconds all the same. News, that's what the call was. The rest of the future was foggy as fuck but the call was so obviously news. "What is it?"

"I found her," Asterion said, without preamble. He wasn't a talker at the best of times, and he didn't really want to be talking to Apollo at all. "Erato. She's hurt. I don't know what to do."

"Where is she?" Apollo said, shooting across the apartment for the door. Fast. Lashing out his hand to grab his keys. Nothing else. Keys, car, phone in his hand. Alive. Alive but hurt. Oh, he was going to tear Hybris apart.

"Asylum in Long Island. Do you want me to drive her somewhere? We could meet you?" He wasn't good at plans, but if Apollo gave him orders, he would follow them. "I got her out. She's safe in my backseat."

"Bring her to me," Apollo commanded, implored— begged, even, though the need he felt in his heart to be with Erato didn't translate into his voice. "I'll drive toward you— tell me where in Long Island you are so I'll know where we'll meet."

"Can't I bring her to your house? Or meet you at her house?" He wanted them to drive towards each other and then what...heal her on the side of the road?! "I'm not leaving her side. Where ever you take her, I am going too." He wanted direction, but Asterion wasn't going to just drop her off like a fucking package. He did, however, tell Apollo where he was so that Apollo didn't think he was keeping the information from him. Not at all.

"She's hurt, minotaur, she needs me. I'm not going to wait here like a war widow when she needs me," Apollo snapped, still on the move. His car was only parked minutes away, but it was still minutes. "I'm meeting you half way. Is Hybris following you?"

Asterion gritted his teeth at being called 'minotaur'. As if he was just a beast and didn't deserve a name. He wasn't going to focus on that, though, when Erato needed help.

"I killed Hybris," Asterion said, and then he leaned forward to whisper to Erato, "I am going to get you to Apollo. He can help. I won't leave your side, I promise."

Then to Apollo, he said, "right, I'm going to start driving.

"Do it," Apollo said, his voice still in command though his mind was surprised, satisfied, bloodthirstily delighted at the news of Hybris' murder. Oh good. Also yeah, sure, it meant Erato's getaway was a whole lot safer but oh Apollo hoped the minotaur had gouged her open and left her slowly to die. No, no, he hoped he'd eaten her. Fucking serve her right.

His drive out of Manhattan and onto the Long Island Expressway was a vicious one, speed limits shattered in his wake and a number of automatically generated tickets probably waiting for him when he got back. That was a problem he could just throw money at though, the simplest and most efficient problem of all. He was also going to throw money at the problem of getting his car back too, as he was, mostly likely, abandoning it to climb in with Erato. He'd be in no state to drive, once he found her, he was pretty fucking sure of that.

Still, his foot didn't let up, not once. He wasn't wasting a moment.

Asterion climbed into the front seat as well, leaving Erato bundled in the back. He drove quickly as well, though probably not as fast as Apollo was; he had precious cargo.

He trundled along the Long Island Expressway, wondering how he was going to spot Apollo. When he saw a car fly past and then hook a U-Turn and come hurtling towards him though, he realised he needn't have worried. Asterion pulled off to the side of the road and parked, before assuring Erato, "we're here. Apollo's here and he's going to help you."

As Asterion drove, Erato had retreated into her nest of blanket, curling up tight. The rumble of the engine was soothing after the echoey quiet of the hospital, and it lulled her into a twilight between awake and asleep, where her mind softly turned things over and she could picture the sun on a green meadow, and feel the cool dew on her soft pink feet. She hummed under her breath as she walked, trailing fingers over soft lillies and lupins, hollyhocks and foxgloves. Alas, my love, you do me wrong, to cast me off so discourteously...

Apollo, did he say? The name filtered through, but Erato didn't respond, because it was dark and painful in the real world and much nicer to be in this soft-focus place in the warm and safe.

He could feel her, through the distance and the body of the car, he could feel some part of her anima calling to his. Apollo slammed the door of his car shut, carelessly loud in the night, and his feet crunched on the gravel at the side of the road as he closed the space between the cars. He banged his hand, not hard, a couple of times on the bonnet as he passed, a kind of acknowledgement that the minotaur had done what he'd said he was going to do and Apollo appreciated those who followed his instructions like that.

And then he was pulling open the back door, revealing the horror of all that had happened to Erato, and the scope of all that was up to him to put right. "Erato," he said, soft as the morning sun. "Here I am."

She lifted her head, lank hair falling over her thin pale face, half obscured by dirty bandages. Cold air was coming from the open door and she turned towards it, taking in a deep breath as she heard that voice saying her name. It was like grey dawn coming after the deepest of nights to know that her lord was there.

"But soft, what light from yonder window breaks? It is the east-" Her voice was whispery and paper-thin, like a too-strong gust of wind could blow it away, and she raised a hand, turning her head slightly to try and piece together where he was.

Tenderly, he caught her hand in his, closing his fingers around it as he slid into the back seat next to her. His other hand touched her cheek, lightly, taking in the bandages and the damage beneath – he could tell, with a horrified lurch, that she was not whole. That he had his work cut out for him trying to piece her back together. "Is this where it hurts the worst?" he asked, soft as a light through a yonder window breaking.

"I- I want to see your face again," Erato whispered, desperate yet ashamed that Apollo should see her in such a state. Walking again could wait. Repairing her ruined feet was for another day. Being free of this dreadful darkness was something her soul cried out for. But she knew she must look terrible, all dirty and smelly and sallow for want of sunshine. "I wanted it to be you, I wanted it to be you so badly-"

Asterion couldn't really do anything now, but he wasn't going to go far. He hovered close by, watching Erato carefully. Apollo was going to be able to heal her, right? Restore her sight? Make her feel better? The fact that she was so hurt made his chest ache and Asterion wasn't used to it and he didn't like it.

If only it wasn't midnight.

If only he could summon the very sun to warm her, to drink in its power and let it spill out of him onto her, into her, sunshine to light her way through the dark. Here, on the side of the road, the whole of the earth between him and the sun, he did not feel powerful. The fates had decide he wouldn't be the one to find her, had laid things out that when they were finally reunited, it was in the middle of the night. Tomorrow, tomorrow would be better for this.

He wasn't going to wait until tomorrow. Whatever it was going to do to him, he couldn't wait, not with Erato's delicate skull cupped gently between his large hands, his thumbs over her cheekbones, her empty eye sockets centered in the space between his thumbs and his forefingers. "You'll see my face again," he promised her, summoning every last scrap of power he still had access to, and channeling it all into optic nerves and blood vessels, humors both vitreous and aqueous, iris and pupil, cornea and retina, right down to the last millimeter of immaculate macula.

There was some bitter irony, he considered, unamused, in that the details vital in the regrowing of an eye were still fresh in his memory. A very Melpomene style gift to her sister, there. He'd been so close to killing her for that act, and now, because he'd done this so recently, it was that very act that made regrowing Erato's eyes come a little easier.

Easier, perhaps, but it was still not easy.

At first, Apollo's hands on her face were comforting and warm, and Erato was happy to settle into them and receive his blessing. But then he exhaled, long and controlled, and his hands pressed down across her eyes, and she gasped so hard she almost choked.

She did not like this, not at all, not his hands on her face, even though he was Apollo, her Musagetes, and would always be her protector. Her body was tense and tight though, trying to steel herself, because she knew pulling away would only invite pain- but, but Hybris wasn't there anymore. Was she?

"Pain pays the income of each precious thing," Erato groaned, feeling like worms were squirming in her eye sockets, tingling and wriggling. The longer it went, the more it felt like something coming together, and then blooming like flowers, and she cried out in surprise and agony of the soul.

Asterion was watching every moment with anxious attention. "She's been saying things like that," he explained to an Apollo who probably wasn't even listening to him. "I don't know what they mean." He jammed his thumbnail in his mouth and started chewing. Was Apollo healing her? Was it happening?

Apollo barely heard the minotaur's worry, and barely heard the comment from Erato that inspired it, he was focused too hard on Erato's eyes. He could hear his own breath, rough in his ears, and her cry– he heard that, and focused just a little more on keeping her in place.

"Take hold of me," he encouraged her, for if she was holding onto him she was less likely to squirm out of his grip – not that she had the strength to squirm out of his grip, but anything that would stop her fighting him and get her to work with him instead would help. He would not think about the mess of half-formed-eyes she might make if she did catch him off guard and break away. "Erato, I'm here, hold onto me."

"Beauty's a doubtful good, a glass, a flower,
Lost, faded, broken, dead within an hour;
And beauty, blemish'd once, for ever's lost,
In spite of physic, painting, pain, and cost."

Erato whispered to herself, holding onto Apollo's shirt as a glow of heat started to bloom under his hands. It was not comfortable, but it was somehow reassuring, because it was him, and he was the sun to her. Asterion was still there too, she heard the rumble of his voice, but this was what she was focused on right now. Sparkling worms of light were starting to burst, sending messages to her brain once more as blood vessels were rebuilt, and a hazy glow was growing. "And beauty- blemish'd once- blemished- oh- oh-"

"Do you want me to explain or do you want me to concentrate?" Apollo growled, letting just a sliver of his attention on Erato wane to ask the question. Wisdom would tell him not to piss the man off, that his strength was formidable, his temper questionable, and that if he decided Apollo was hurting Erato then both Apollo and Erato would be worse off, but wisdom was taking a back seat right now.

"The eyes are the windows to your soul," Erato said faintly, and gave a great shudder. The work was done, there at least, and she felt dizzy and sick and her eyes itched. But oh, that they were there to itch! She sagged against Apollo's grip, clumsily scratching at the side of the bandages.

Asterion clapped his jaw shut then, and let Apollo get on with it. He was still so worried, but Erato seemed, at least to Asterion, to be a little better? Slumping against the god with exhaustion, but- But her voice sounded like she was in less pain.

"Careful," he warned her, but his voice was thick with exhaustion, and the warning was a soft one, because it was Erato, and for her he would be soft. Despite the utterly drained, hollow (terrifying, actually) feeling pooling in him, he reached up to try and steady her scratching hands, so no stray, treacherous nail of hers would risk damaging that perfect face. Her fingers had already tugged at the bandage when he covered his hands with hers, though, and he cupped her face in his hands, tilted it toward him to examine his work with his own, now-bleary eyes. "Erato?" he asked, hoping to Zeus she could see him.

The light was bright on her newborn eyes, and they watered as she tried to blink them into focus. Everything was a blur, and she squinted, and the bright light before her formed into the shape of Apollo's face. He had given her back her sight, and she sucked in a shuddering breath. For a long moment, she searched for the right words, casting for anything that might express herself through the bone-numbing weariness she felt.

"So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee," she whispered, and she turned her weak eyes towards where she knew Asterion was. "I am... shattered."

Apollo sounded exhausted and now Erato was saying she was shattered. So here was something he could do. "I'll get you somewhere safe," he promised Erato, as she looked at him. "You tell me where to drive and I'll get you there," he said, this time to Apollo. "You stay back here with her."

He slipped into the front seat and started the car up, headed away from this dreadful place and back home to the city where Erato belonged.
