All I want for Christmas is a match in which both teams score a century before you figure in the Snitch. The sum of both team's goals, that is.

[Conspiracy Trio]

Now that the dust from the hearings has died down a little, what are our collective thoughts on the hearings, and who spoke and didn't, apart from the obvious?

And this match, what in Godric's name?

Also, just for your information, in case you think the referendum plays into it, I've seen the numbers for the poll that will go out this week, probably Wednesday. 38 percent for, 31 percent against, 31 percent undecided. I think a bunch of those so-called undecided voters just don't want to admit how they're voting.

[Press ward (you know who you are)]
So what do we do over the long holiday with no quidditch?

[Urq siblings]
Christmas presents for the family, go.

It won't solve the problem of leagues having different strengths comparatively, but you and Fraser are supposed to be the arithmancy boffins. You'll have to figure out a way around that.

It's not going to be solved with arithmancy, it's going to be solved with money going to youth programs.

That'll do for twenty years for now, but how do you tell the difference between league strengths this year and next?

Oh no - I'm not getting involved in this argument again

I'm not having an argument. I'm sincerely curious about how we reckon things for the World Cup. Not that the current British method is any better for measuring different teams since the quality of the defence is always a concern.

Especially in today's match.

I think 'strength of schedule' can sometimes be coded as 'play in a league without as much money as European teams'. Why should a team be penalized for not having the same access to competition? Certainly it is in Quidditch's long-term interest to put some of these smaller leagues on the bigger stage to promote its growth.

Oh, I see what you mean. There are two problems, though, for the World Cup. Fans want to see the best quidditch, which means the strongest teams, which are mostly Euro. And yet at the same time, we also want to lift up quidditch as a sport around the world, as you say, so there's the matter of seeding smaller teams in without getting them smashed against the rocks of a star team from one of the Euro leagues.

I don't know how to solve those problems but I see both of them. And I agree that growth is necessary, even if in the short run, it's personally more of a benefit to me (and you) if the BIL and the Euro leagues continue to dominate.

I think there are a boatload of Chudley Cannon fans that disprove your point. Fans don't necessarily want to see 'the best Quidditch' so much as they want to see their teams compete.

Fair point. But trust me--I read the quidditch owls to the Prophet, and there are plenty who care about the quality of the game. There's a lot of complaining about these low-scoring matches, and not always from fans of the teams who are playing in them.

But don't you agree that World Cup play is an entirely different matter than intraleague?

In some ways they're very similar and in others they're very different.

There's a lot of downside from the ownership perspective since the games often run long and they can be brutal. You can lose players there and have no control over it. You don't hire the coach, you don't set the rules, but you can still end up with a big hole in your roster. Just to state an obvious difference.

From the fan perspective they're more similar except that World Cup is international and costs an arm and a leg to attend, with the return being additional national pride.
