Who: Maddie Savage, C.L.A.M.S. kids, Participants, and Random Guests (i.e., anyone who wants to be there, can be!)
What: Quidditch Exhibition for Kids in Need
When: 7 April 2000
Where: Rannoch Moor
Warnings: There better not be! This is a kid-friendly event!

C.L.A.M.S. Presents: Quidditch Exhibition for Future Players

Maddie arrived early to set up and make sure that all of the (seemingly hundreds) of moving pieces fall together the way they should. There had been more interest than they'd originally thought, no doubt because of the names that had gotten attached to the event, so her number of kids had swelled to almost double what they'd originally planned. Since the volunteer interest and funding for this event in particular had also been more than expected, things had come together rather neatly.

Almost too neatly. Maybe it was her innate cynicism, but she kept expecting something to go wrong.

The kids were already have a great time, though, even before the event started. They were all full of nervous energy, all dancing around in their matching shirts and waving the gift bags that Alex had put together for them. Occasionally, a well-informed kid would see a face they recognised and start shouting to the others, pointing out one of the volunteer players and calling out their names—which never ceased making Maddie laugh.

When finally their hosts appeared before them, the roar of cheering and clapping was almost deafening, and when the players took to the air, it felt strange for Maddie to not be among them. But somehow, also not strange at all. She grinned at the kids sitting next to her and settled in for the show, adding explanations as she heard questions around her.

[OOC Note: Feel free to NPC random kids as needed, but also interact with the other adults.]

What did you show the kids? What was their reaction? How did the hosts liven things up? Did the kids make special requests? How did you play off of your fellow players?

Dunbar's more than happy to show off some Chaser moves if the kids ask for them. He'll happily play off of Alasdair or team up to show how Chasers work together to get a score at the hoops. Kind of interesting since if he hadn't retired he'd have probably been play with Alasdair on Portree this season.

...but please no throwing things at his head. ;)

Alasdair would have asked Dunbar into this anyway, and with the older man's help demonstrates the swift passes back and forth that the Portree chasers have been known for this season (and some of the children have jaws hanging open in delight).

To add a bit of spice to proceedings, he also shows the kids a few trick shots, including his personal favourite, adding spin onto the Quaffle as he aims, making the ball swing through the air and go for a different hoop than the one he'd appeared to be aiming at.

Hamish is in his element today. He loves kids, he loves talking to them and playing off them and answering their questions. As co-host, he strays from the script often and liberally, certain that his cohost doesn't mind.

He introduces every player on his list with their actual credentials and then some made up fact, judging which ones the kids like best by their reactions.

He's high energy and if any requests are thrown his way, he's accommodating them.

Ada is happy to act as Keeper whenever needed during the exhibition. She's sure to include a few of her trick shots, including quafflepunching. And although it's been some years since she's played the position she'll try out playing as Chaser if needed - though she's certainly nowhere near as good as her husband-to-be, obviously.

Small Groups

After the main event, the kids get to divide up into smaller groups and get some up-close time with professionals and volunteers amateurs. What did your group do?

Dunbar is surprisingly good with kids. :O

He'll happily help any of his group out with riding on the toy brooms if they're wary or whatever.

(Do you suppose they're covered by any insurance to allow for very low altitude rides with players on actual brooms?)

I think low altitude is good. Probably there's a height restriction on it, and also cushioning charms. All of the kids would be of an age that they can handle that much (i.e., no toddlers).

True. Though I'd meant, and my bad for not clearing it up, that if they're (the players helping out) allowed to take the kids on their brooms at low altitudes

Sorry, yes. That was what I meant—yes to whatever you'd like to do. Not planning for any drama around this event, so do whatever you think is fun and within reason. :-)

Okie dokies then! XD And don't worry, the last thing Dunbar would want is an angry parent after him.

Hamish flies along some of the groups, talking to kids who wanna ask him questions. He tells them that he doesn't play quidditch, but when he gets enough interest he demonstrates a few random skills, including diving at the ground. Then he gets back to letting the players lead the groups.

Another attendee of this event in particular knows that Alasdair is good with children, and indeed wants some of their own, so it's of no surprise that the break out groups go well. Unlike others, he chooses to fly alongside the kids - he has some of the older ones with him flying their own brooms. He's a good teacher, showing the kids how to control their brooms with more subtlety, something they need to do when they're eventually able to fly at speed.

Hmm, wonder who that is? ;)

When she isn't busy helping out her own small group of kids her gaze usually follows wherever Alasdair is. No surprises there when she starts thinking of when they'd start teaching their own kids how to fly.

Staff and most volunteers have some free time while the kids get herded to have some snacks on the pitch. Audience members are welcome to join them.

Maddie makes sure to swing by and thank him again for his participation, and she'll comment on how good he is with the kids. She's being genuine, but also teasing a bit, too.

He was happy to help, and to get a break from his usual line of work. Ha. Well, it helps having far younger twin sisters and probably more than a few cousins. XD

Plenty of blokes she knows who have big families still don't know how to talk to kids, so it's still admirable and pretty adorable. She mentions a couple of kids in particular she wants to introduce him to after the break. They're kids who love Quidditch but aren't all that coordinated, and she wants to teach them about the non-playing jobs in Quidditch.

Well, he tries... even if sometimes it's not always a success. Dunbar nods, and says he's happy to talk to them and answer any questions they have.

Snack Time

2018-04-10 02:08 pm UTC (link)
As the kids are eating snacks, Hamish goes out there and steals some snacks for himself, then he's asking kids questions and just having a blast hanging out with them. He gets them talking and he's an active listener, prompting more questions, hosting impromptu polls, asking them their favourite teams and trying to recruit new Cannons fans.

(He's pretty much laughed at there.)

Unsurprisingly, Alasdair sits with Ada while the kids hang out for their snacks. However, they eventually have a crowd of the wee ones sitting in a circle around them, intrigued by Ada's accent and asking them both about life and playing in France. There's something about their clear stability and togetherness that seems to appeal to the more anxious kids among the group.

Ada is definitely a little amused when the crowd started to form but she's more than happy to answer any questions with Alasdair that the wee ones have for them.

It probably won't surprise Alasdair any when later, on the way home (or once they're home), she comments about how she can't wait for their own wee ones.
