GENERAL SCHEDULE

6a-9a »» Captain’s Sessions
A mix of running, strength training, and agility drills with Lorna and Alasdair at the helm. Other staff members are at the pitch to oversee and be available as resources if needed because Ellie won’t be there.

9a-12p »» Break!
Nothing official planned. Nap if you need it. (Please nap!) Time for one-on-ones if needed.

12p-2p »» Strategy Sessions
Lunch strategy meetings. Menu by Maggie. Reviewing old matches. Focusing on styles of other teams, with a bit more focus on Montrose. One day might even be media training/PR stuff, just to cover all bases here.

2pm onward »» Coach’s sessions
Lots of scrimmages in weird variations. They will be playing down, she might challenge players to play as if they have an injury, not using an arm, or any other weird thing you might think of. Most days players will be out by 5pm.

Exceptions:
Saturday, 3 February, training 7am-1pm
Sunday, 4 February a day of rest. (you're welcome)
Thursday, 8 February team will be dismissed just after 9am.
Friday, 9 February is the day at the Dragon Reserve.

Late night check in

After calling for a break once she noticed a few players asleep on their brooms and before they got back out there, Ellie made her rounds. She was doing her best to keep checking in with the players and Maggie to make sure they had what they needed and it wasn't too much. Of everyone, she mostly kept circling back to Lorna and Alasdair. She needed them to be her eyes and ears in the thick of if.

(More importantly, at least as far as Alasdair is concerned, she is working through her bullshit to let him be the leader and mentor she knows he's capable of. And she thinks she has made some respectable progress.)

She approaches armed with snacks and an electrolyte beverage. The snacks to share, the drink for Alasdair. "How do you think everyone is doing so far?" Her exchange with David still fresh in her mind.

Being brought snacks and drinks was unusual enough, and from the coach, moreso - but he was certainly ready for them at this point, and he accepted gratefully.

Chewing thoughtfully on a protein bar, he looked at a random point in midair, thinking it through carefully. "Depends on who you look at, I think," he mused, turning to sit himself down on a nearby bench, stretching out his long legs. "The old hands are doing alright. And I count myself in that group," he snorted, glancing around at some of the younger squad members lurking around the place. "The younger ones? I'm not sure they know what's hit them...with the possible exception of Scrimmy." He didn't elaborate further. Didn't need to - he knew that Ellie knew how tenacious the younger woman was.

"Should we all be so lucky to grow old in this sport." It was optimistic, but not without that pinch of sadness. Even looking at her team - at people like Lorna and Maddie especially - there was only a few good years left. And that was without injuries. And this season had already been quite brutal.

"Scrimmy is a beast unto herself." For better and worse. Ellie looked across the pitch, spotting David. She nodded in that direction. "Do you think he'll be ready to play against the Harpies?"

"Hear hear," Alasdair softly replied, taking another sip of his drink as he contemplated his own thoughts, them leading him in much a similar path to those Ellie's were going down.

Following her line of sight, Alasdair spotted the younger Chaser, still considering him in the role of stepping up just temporarily. "He's done alright in the air, and given the form their Chasers are in? He'll be fine, I think, but we'd be best served getting him to practice assistance drills to get him up to speed with the way the three of us," and he meant the three starters here, "take turns to lead."

Ellie nodded. "We'll plan to drill on those next week." Because for as tough that this week was, there was still the next week to worry about, and the one after that. All the way through to post season.

"Certainly get him comfortable with you and Scrimmy for the Harpies, give Joy time." Honestly, Ellie hadn't really thought that there was any option on the table. Joy was coming back. She was going to get fast, unpredictable Aussie chaser back.

Alasdair felt his shoulders relax a little, grateful as always for his ideas being both sought out and appreciated.

"I'll make sure I talk to him. He's had match time replacing me, but not match time alongside me. We'll see if there's anything in particular he wants to work on, too."

Ellie nodded. "We'll be running a younger offensive line. I trust you to be my anchor." She might not have said it so directly before, but maybe it would be clearer now.

"And we're not going to underestimate the Harpies." Not when Ellie was at least entirely sure that Pride wasn't curse when it came to going up against teams she used to play for.

Alasdair, standing a little taller, simply gave a little nod, showing he'd heard and understood the implicit instruction. Though Joy had been younger and less experienced, the way they'd played things before - generally speaking - was for him to be the one in the middle, making the plays and the calls in the air that would benefit the supporting powerhouse and the speedy danger that the women alongside him were. With 11 years between him and David and 8 years between him and Scrimmy, he would have to take that dominating role from Joy now, and it was one he took seriously.

He nodded again in agreement, eyes meeting those of his coach. "Underestimate no-one, be shamed by no-one," he replied, repeating an old mantra he'd been taught by his first coach at Quiberon. Losses happened, but you took them harder if you fucked up in a way you could have avoided.

"Thanks Buchanan," she said clapping his shoulder. "I'm going to let you get back out there. Or at least continue the rest of your break in peace." She smiled. There was still that small grain of doubt, but it was getting easier to ignore. Sometimes she could actually let the logic win over the reaction and emotion.

"Drinks break and stretches it is," he replies, waggling the water bottle in the air. "Wouldn't do to cramp up and watch the look on Maggie's face."
