CODE BY TESSISAMESS

GENERAL SCHEDULE

6a-9a »» Captain’s Sessions
A mix of running, strength training, and agility drills with Lorna and Alasdair at the helm. Other staff members are at the pitch to oversee and be available as resources if needed because Ellie won’t be there.

9a-12p »» Break!
Nothing official planned. Nap if you need it. (Please nap!) Time for one-on-ones if needed.

12p-2p »» Strategy Sessions
Lunch strategy meetings. Menu by Maggie. Reviewing old matches. Focusing on styles of other teams, with a bit more focus on Montrose. One day might even be media training/PR stuff, just to cover all bases here.

2pm onward »» Coach’s sessions
Lots of scrimmages in weird variations. They will be playing down, she might challenge players to play as if they have an injury, not using an arm, or any other weird thing you might think of. Most days players will be out by 5pm.

Exceptions:
Saturday, 3 February, training 7am-1pm
Sunday, 4 February a day of rest. (you're welcome)
Thursday, 8 February team will be dismissed just after 9am.
Friday, 9 February is the day at the Dragon Reserve.

Maddie can think of only one reason that Ellie and Bart might want to talk to her. She feels like she should be nervous, but instead feels oddly detached coming into the clubhouse.

"You wanted to see me?" she says as she enters, holding a freshly-filled water bottle and generally looking alert (because, after all, it's only Monday).

"Yep," says Bart. "We want to talk about our Seeker strategy for the rest of the season." He gestures to the chair. "You should sit down. We're not trading you; we're planning when to play you and, once he recovers, Parkinson."

"Was trading me a possibility?" Maddie can't help raising an eyebrow at that, because she isn't sure if it's telling of their opinions or her or just of the way things have gone with the team this season. She sits down. "How can I assist with planning? I'm ready whenever you're ready to play me."

"No. Not at all." Ellie pauses a moment. "Unless that was something you wanted." Although Ellie really hoped not. There was already too much change. She was done with all of that.

"Pride is fortunate enough to have two experienced seekers. It past time we used that to our advantage." As it were, technically Maddie had better stats against Pip if you only looked at number of snitches caught. "It probably comes as little surprise that you'll be starting against the Harpies. Beyond and into the rest of the season, our plan is play you and Pip equally. To aim for the best match against the opposing seeker regardless of notions of 'reserve' or 'starter.'"

"The thought hadn't crossed my mind. You know I'm in the Pride for life." Though, in that moment, she wonders why she hadn't thought of it. There were plenty of teams out there that could use a talent upgrade, based on League standings alone.

"No, it's not a surprise." Maddie obviously saw the hit Pip had taken and has heard the chatter around the team. "That's good to hear. I'm anxious to get on the pitch again."

"I want to be clear with you, Maddie: I value you and I know Coach MacFusty does too. I had a very specific reason for playing Parkinson against Ballycastle that had nothing to do with your performance. I'd've put you on the pitch against them otherwise. It's your turn, and you deserve to know that." Bart could say all these things without reflecting badly on Ellie or Cav. Ellie could certainly follow up, too. He was leaving her that room.

"I have to admit, there's a lot that hasn't been clear this season," Maddie says, and decides to leave it at that out of respect for Ellie. She's heard even more team chatter about their coach than she has about Pip, but she hasn't made an effort to dig up the dirty details. It's not her business unless Ellie makes it her business. "But I know the pre-season decisions didn't rest with either of you, so I appreciate your efforts to do what makes the most sense for the team now."

That's all said in an even, rather neutral tone. Then she adds with a bit of a smile, "And honestly? I miss being on the pitch."

Ellie didn't need to comment on the first statement. She knew first hand, having been coached by Bart, that their styles were very different. Opposites even. This on top of her almost antagonistic relationship with Cav, well, it probably left something to be desired.

"I heard you had quite the showing at the charity match." Regardless of who caught the snitch, Maddie was eager to get back out there. Ellie knew that. She had wanted to play her again sooner. But circumstance dictated otherwise. "I am eager to get you back out there and do what you have been doing well since 1987. I know you were a great mentor to Eliot before, but now it's time for you to shine."

"The charity match was brilliant," Maddie says, and the way her smile brightens makes it obvious that it was the highlight of her season so far. "Montrose's new girl wasn't too bad, either. Shame she caught the Snitch on a loss." She allows herself to look a tiny bit smug at that.

She takes a swig from her water bottle and looks between them. "Speaking of getting back out there—anything else we need to talk about? Don't want to make anyone nervous by staying holed up too long."

"Aye, but you're better." It a reflex, but not untrue, to Maddie's statement about the new Montrose seeker.

"And smarter," Bart adds, because it's true that age and treachery can overcome youthful enthusiasm. "Now go get 'em and show everybody what you've got."

Maddie gives them a little salute and a bow as she stands up. "Let's not jix things, shall we? But seriously, thank you for the transparency."
