[There is a hard, sudden, unexplainable snap of connection. A brief second of distant white noise, the white noise Max heard in the last phone message with Luke. Sliding from barely audible to a hard-edged rasp, and finally to a desperate yell that no one has ever heard from the Bat before.]

Dailey. [It would sound like 'daily,' if one didn't know better.] I did let it happen to me. Just dying slower.

[He's breathing, still connected.] Oracle, [He's stronger when he uses the codename.] Oracle, save Amanda. [It wasn't an order, or a panicked cry this time. He was repeating it to himself--or talking to someone he thought was with him, impossible to tell which.] He has Amanda. Too good to stop at Corbinian. I don't know where he went. I can't see him. Neither can you. Don't come. Keep you away from here...

[A quick hiss at her name and she's isolating the comm to the people who answered the call, the need to stay updated outweighing the desire for complete secrecy. At least it get too far with this crowd. Then her voice is as even and patient as ever.] Amanda's fine. She's away. She's safe. And she'll stay that way. [That's for his benefit as well as a side command to Cipher, if she'll listen.] But we're still coming to get you. You said you let it happen to you. What? How injured are you?

Amanda's safe? [As if he does not quite believe this, and muffled, he repeated to someone he thought was with him, she says Amanda's safe. A short pause and he groans in obvious movement, or effort to move. The grate of gravel, the rustle of the cape.] You thought it once when you were dying. I felt it. 'The Bat wouldn't...' [Fading.] But I did, once. Don't think that. I let things like that happen all the time. One bullet or a knife or a fall... a long fall.

He knows you're coming. Max is... Amanda's safe? [He needs to hear it again, and when he does, he sighs, and goes quiet.]

[She has such a hard time following that, that it almost makes her miss her turn, and there's the screech of tires as she nears the coordinates and pulls the truck to a stop.] It's dark. Can you see the moon from where you're at? [She thinks he's outside, but the buildings here, some of them are missing glass, and that could account for the traffic sounds. She honks her horn experimentally, listening to see if the sound comes back at her through the comm. It does, faintly, and she almost chokes from holding her breath and waiting for it, the sound.] The Bat wouldn't what? Oracle? [Because she's known him longer and maybe she knows.] Amanda's safe. And it doesn't matter if he knows we're coming. We outnumber him.

You saw that? You felt that? [A shaky whisper of disbelief. Of all the memories and all the people. And then she counters without much amusement.] But you got back up. You wouldn't have made that kind of mistake. Your guard was never so low that you couldn't... [She murmurs quietly and unhappily at the deeply personal conversation they're having in semi-public and reminds him of the other questions.]

He's just one man, Bat. We can take him. Can you see the moon? Did you hear the honk?
