[Open Commlink.]
[There is a hard, sudden, unexplainable snap of connection. A brief second of distant white noise, the white noise Max heard in the last phone message with Luke. Sliding from barely audible to a hard-edged rasp, and finally to a desperate yell that no one has ever heard from the Bat before.]

ORACLE!

[And again, before anyone has a chance to respond.]

Oracle!

You saw that? You felt that? [A shaky whisper of disbelief. Of all the memories and all the people. And then she counters without much amusement.] But you got back up. You wouldn't have made that kind of mistake. Your guard was never so low that you couldn't... [She murmurs quietly and unhappily at the deeply personal conversation they're having in semi-public and reminds him of the other questions.]

He's just one man, Bat. We can take him. Can you see the moon? Did you hear the honk?

[A faint whisper of something, but it's incoherent. He's reassured about Amanda, and his energy turns elsewhere, away from the conversation.]

[She's going to ask one (or both) of them about that later.] Oracle, at coordinates. Will keep comm running.

[Grimly.] Be careful. I'll be here, Cipher. I'll be listening. [That's all she can do at the moment.]

Can't you keep them away? [Soft, exhausted.]

[If this wasn't so dire, she would've laughed. But keeping him talking at least lets her know he's still there.] If only. And since when does anyone listen when I say fall back?

I listen to you. [The Bat rarely says the word 'I' and it is clear he considers the conversation only between the two of them. Or maybe he's so delirious at this point he's talking to whatever or whoever he thinks is listening.]

[This time there is a laugh, though a quick one. Her voice is soft, half indulgence and half truth.] Well, that's because I don't tell you what to do.

[This is very true. He's not coherent enough to catch it.] I listen to everyone. Even when they don't want my help.

You're starting to sound like me. [A beat.] After this, we're going to talk about you taking it easier from now on.

[Absolutely without direction, pained.] My guard was down and he shot me in the back. First year. First mistake. Rookie mistake.

[The inhale's low but audible. So that's why the memory is coming up.] The suit helped. And you're still mobile. [She heard the sound but just in case...] Right?

Yes. [Time is confusing when you've got this much hallucinogen in you.] This is before the suit was very good. Not so... good. It's not your fault. Easy mistake.

[A frown but she's just going with it. Little sense in trying to make sense.] It could've been avoided. Should've been. [Realizing it can be misconstrued, she makes the differentiation.] I should've worn my vest that day. And at least you've got a good suit now.

[Very, very quietly.] You didn't know. Not your fault. [He seems to think it's very important to discuss this right now.]

[They're getting really personal now and she isolates further as a precaution.]

You can't believe that. [Because obviously she doesn't and usually they're in agreement.]

Mistakes happen. You can't take the gun out of his hand... before it kills them.

[That's what she tells herself on a good day but there's always the bad day argument. And after this week, pessimism comes easier.] Mistakes get us killed, or worse. They happen but there's still fault. All we—All I can do is not make them again. I need to stop making them. [An abrupt hiss as she remembers now is not the best time to tell him what happened a few days ago.] Why didn't you tell me sooner? Why now?

[Almost wryly.] No, they're more than a little embarrassing. I'm sorry you had to see mine. [Then, matter-of-factly.] Good thing you're not dying today.

Should have died yesterday. [His voice cracks, as if from strain, and there's a soft wail of a baby's cry in the background before the first sniper shot echoes through the comm.] No. [It's a panicked moan, and he disconnects to try to get them away one more time... before going silent.]
