Okay. I think I understand what's going on. At least, I understand it as much as I'm going to.

My name is Sally Sparrow. Barbara explained to me what's happening, but I'm afraid I'm not sure why I'm here. I don't have superpowers, I'm not from the future. I'm actually from the past.

No one else was touched by an angel, were they? Just thought I'd ask.

Anyway, hello! Let me know if there's anything I can do to help around here. I think keeping busy is my best option right now.

Does violence allow that?

Interesting. Many of those where you come from?

It does for me.

I live in London, so yes.

Lucky.

I don't know where that is.

Sometimes. I guess not now.

England. Earth? Wait, are you not from Earth?

You'll adapt. Or you won't. Those are the only choices, in my experience.

I'm not.

Rather black and white of you.

Where are you from?

Before I was here, I was on a ship. Before that, I was on a planet called Westerly, in the J system. Also known as the Quad.

I'll hazard a guess that none of this sounds familiar.

All of those things are probably as unfamiliar to me as London is to you, I'm afraid.

You'd feel right at home. Plenty of ruins to look at. We have a whole planet that didn't take well to terraforming so some assholes figured it'd be the perfect site for some secret experiments. Stellar logic like that blew up in their faces, along with most of their facilities.

The ruins sound interesting, but I'm not sure about the experimental crazy scientist bit. I almost feel like I've had enough of that for one lifetime.

Haven't we all.

What ruins do you prefer? Ancient civilizations? Recent disasters?

I don't know if disaster is a word for it. More...abandoned. There's beauty in the sadness, you know?

Not something I've experienced. Sadness is just sadness.

It's a shame. Sadness has its own sort of beauty, I think. Like, the remnants of what once was are the echo of the happier times. And joy can't really exist without pain, can it? You need the pain to appreciate the good things. It reminds us of why those times and experiences are so important and that they're fleeting.

Where I come from, joy is what we call our currency. You may be on to something.

Experienced a lot of pain in your life?

How do you spend joy?? Or do you mean that was the actual name of your currency?

Not a lot, no. Or perhaps. My mother died when I was young and my father was absent much of my life. He passed away a year ago or so. And then I lost my closest friend in a semi-tragic way, but that's an entirely different story.

Overall, though, I don't think it was that bad. As I said, there was something to cherish from those memories. Capturing the abandoned helps me reflect on how everything is temporary, even loves and friendships. Maybe it's strange, but I think others who feel that way.

The latter. It must've had a more official name when it was first created, but once it got to Westerly that backwater twisted it into something a little more... vivid.

Getting the sense that losing friends and family isn't common where you're from.

Interesting.

It is and it isn't. I guess I've lost more than most people my age.
