Lord Voldemort had been busy. Unlike others in his organisation it was difficult to distract him when he had a goal - and he certainly had a goal. The Elder Wand was within his grasp; it was so close he could almost taste it. Therefore, it was no surprise to him he'd almost missed Lucius' slip. Almost. Not quite.

He slammed the cover to his journal shut, and apparated directly back to the study in Malfoy Manor... well... Voldemort Manor, now, he supposed. He paced. He brooded. He seethed. And when he was sure his anger had reached a point that his very ire could be felt in his summons... he called, pressing his wand to the mark on Pettigrew's arm. He watched the man writhe in pain, knowing that the others would experience a level of discomfort hitherto unmatched, and he smirked. "Now, fetch Narcissa... I want her to witness this," he growled at Pettigrew... and the rat simpered and disappeared to do his master's bidding.

Now all he had left to do... was wait.

Lucius Malfoy had never given much thought to Christmas beyond bellowing at the elves to get everything ready. He had always spoiled both his wife and son though the sentiment behind most gifts was lacking. It wasn't that Lucius didn't love his family -- just the opposite really. He thought it was clear from the amount of money he spent; whether he chose something heartfelt never crossed his mind. Narcissa deserved jewels and Draco deserved the top Quidditch gear (along with plenty of books to prepare him for life, of course). However, he never paused to consider hugging his son or kissing his wife as a proper gift. They knew how he felt -- or so he believed.

Still, Christmas had always been a time to be together. Having to leave Draco at Hogwarts his second year had broken Lucius' heart though, naturally, he never let on. Still, his son had been safe at Hogwarts as far as Lucius was concerned. Never mind through his own careless doing he had jeopardized his only child in setting off a chain of events leading right to Tom Riddle. Lucius internalized such mistakes and vowed to do better. Which is exactly why he planned to use the journals to his own advantage. If the Lord deemed him inferior, he'd prove him wrong. Voldemort would regret using Draco if it was the last thing Lucius accomplished in life. Narcissa and Draco and Severus might have thought Lucius a fool and maybe he was. But it was for his family.

Lucius sat at his desk though he didn't feel as if it was his study any longer. Voldemort had robbed him of everything. He wrote furiously in his journal, composing a letter to Remus Lupin. It was a sad day when Lucius had to beg help from a wolf, but he'd do what needed to be done.
