Party thread!
-Who: Everyone!
-What: Party time!
-When: Day 27, from 5 in the morning carrying on until 5 am the next day when everything will get cleaned up by the golems
-Where: Ballroom, club, bar, places around there
-Status: Complete
-Rating: Who knows! Could go from anywhere between G and R!

If one were to walk into the ballroom after 5 am, they would find brightly colored streamers hanging across the walls and from the ceiling. Confetti was constantly fluttering down from the ceiling, as if the tiny pieces were snow themselves. Tables had been set up along the wall with plates, silverware, and all sorts of food imaginable. The Planet had made sure to include everyone's favorite food on the menu. The dessert table was huge. There was also a drink table nearby, complete with a bar and a few golems manning it to monitor the intake of drinks as well as serve them up. The Planet seemed to be either apologizing for all the people missing or wanting the remaining people to get together and meet each other again.... or perhaps it was a little bit of both.

"Thank you," she said. She wasn't so sure that her teammates would be as generous to her if they knew she sat out a potential battle. Rahne would probably accuse her of being callous, at the very least.

As the handsome man bowed, Illyana curtseyed, glad she'd chosen an actual dress to wear to the party rather than trousers and a blouse, as she'd been considering. Formal dancing seemed like it would be easier in a dress. At least, it wouldn't look awkward with two pairs of trousers waltzing around. She allowed herself to be led to the dance floor, and managed to not blush too badly as he took her hands.

"I warn you," she said, "others have tried to get me to dance like a proper lady, but it hasn't gone exactly to plan." 'Berto had tried, as he had tried with all the girls, and, while she hadn't blundered completely, she'd irritated him with some of her less-than-graceful turns. Amara had been the only one able to keep to his steps, she remembered. She felt Legolas move to begin the dance, and tried to focus on the movement. She wasn't anywhere near as graceful as he was - she doubted even Stevie Hunter was as graceful - but she managed not to step on his toes, which, in her mind, meant she was doing just fine.

"Well, then, I shall have to teach you to dance like Illyana." He smiled at her and kept to the most basic of the elven dance steps. At it's most complex, elven dance was impossible for most humans to do, even the most graceful. But the most simple even a small child could do, and it was this that he started with.

"This is not the dance of Mirkwood, of course." He spoke as he led her through a simple series of moves, doing them slowly enough that she could follow, and speeding up only when she was ready. "This dancing would be much more proper in Imladris or Lothlorien, where the high elves live."

It wouldn't seem that the music would be suitable for formal dance, but somehow it worked. This music had a good beat, and he could move to it. That's all he really needed. He also kept his eyes locked on the girl, not only because it was appropriate for the dance but also because he wanted to make sure she was enjoying herself.

I shall have to teach you to dance like Illyana. With those words, Legolas officially became the most suave man Illyana had ever met. 'Berto only wished he could be half as smooth with ladies, and even Kurt's gallantry paled in comparison. Now, she was sure she was blushing.

She listened to his explanation of the origins of the dance she was attempting not to ruin, fascinated by the names of the territories. The dimension he came from sounded quite nice, especially compared to other one's she'd had the misfortune of living in. "It's not as tricky as some of the dances at home," she said. It wasn't near as odd as some of the disco the boys liked, and wasn't as hard as some of the ballet that Stevie insisted they learn. "It's actually kind of fun."

That was a very backwards complement, Illyana, good going. She glanced away, realizing she might have sounded insulting. "I mean, I don't usually dance, like I said before, but this sort of dancing is more enjoyable than the dancing I have to do at home. The Professor makes us take dancing lessons to help with our agility training and balance, see, and some of it is really tedious, but this, this isn't like that at all, and I'm really sorry, I'm running off at the mouth aren't I?" Now, she was beet red, she was sure, and it wasn't from finding him cute. She'd embarrassed herself royally, and possibly offended Legolas. This was why some of the New Mutants didn't like taking her to parties.

"It's actually kind of fun..." The words echoed around his head. There was a time, only a few short months ago, when he would have heard that comment and been instantly offended. His reaction would have been to laugh and make a cruel comment back, or perhaps simply to leave the floor. Elven dance was very, very serious business.

But things had changed, and not just since coming to Mirage. Humans were no longer merely a source of scornful amusement for him. He had come to see them as... well, sort of like elves, only more human. In short, he was unable to see them as second-class citizens. Also, it was obvious to him that this girl was very young. He knew because he himself made comments that had people offended, and it was because he was so young.

"Well, I do not know what this ball-ay is." He spoke the word very carefully, "But I am glad that you find this dance to be more enjoyable." There had been a tense moment at first, but Legolas quickly recovered. He squeezed her hands and even smiled at her.

"Perhaps, Lady Illyana, but I am known for doing the same. There is no need to apologize." As if to prove his point, he peered into her face intently. "Are you quite well? Your skin has gone an alarming shade of red. Are you ill?" Elves didn't blush, and he blurted out the words without stopping to think.

She was very, very glad he hadn't taken offense. Magneto would have killed her for speaking so thoughtlessly, and the Professor would not have been pleased at all. Fortunately, neither of them were here to scold her, so maybe she could relax and enjoy the dancing some more.

And then, he looked at her and asked if she was feeling okay. "I'm not ill," she mumbled, looking away and down at the floor. Her steps slowed nearly to a stop. "Just a little embarrassed, that's all." And if Piotr were here, he'd laugh. Not that he wouldn't blush just as badly if he committed such a faux pas, but he'd still laugh. "Social and friendly don't always mix with me," she continued quietly. "Blame my horrible childhood, or lack of one." At least she hadn't gone demon-red. Please, she thought, don't let me freak out and go demon when he's being so nice.

Belatedly, he remembered something that would have made his last question pointless. He sighed softly. "Oh, of course. Humans turn colors when they are embarassed..." Which was a pretty thoughtless thing to say, and he knew it pretty much immediately after he said it.

"I apologize, my lady. I spoke without thinking. It is a failing of mine, I beg you, take no offense." He looked down at her as the dance slowed down and a slow smile spread over his face. "Perhaps we should simply start over, and pretend these embarassing comments were never made."

The music picked up, and Legolas put his hands on the blonde girls waist. Easily, much stronger than he looked, he lifted her into the air, spun her around, and then set her down. "It is a part of the dance." He informed her as explantion.

Illyana managed a smile at Legolas's apology. "It's a failing of mine, too," she said, looking up at him. "My friends think I'm a bit too blunt, and that I need to watch what I say sometimes." Her smile widened at his suggestion that they pretend it all never happened, and she nodded.

She blinked, eyes going wide, as his hands suddenly left hers and settled around her waist. She cried out as he picked her up off the ground, but her cry turned into a laugh as she spun in the air. None of the boys at home could pick her up and spin her like that, not without using their powers. And powers and parties never mixed well. She grinned at Legolas as he set her back down. "There are steps like that in dances back home, too," she said. "But most of my male friends can't manage them too well. My brother could, definitely, but he's not exactly the dancing type."

Although, Piotr would probably be okay at a party like this. There were enough people engaging in various social activities that he wouldn't feel too awkward, she'd bet. And there were many lovely girls he could talk to. Granted, none of them were Kitty, but he had been odd about that last she'd seen him.

"Well, I am glad I am not the only one." He smiled slightly. "My father, King Thrandiul of Mirkwood, nearly disowned me many times." Which wasn't true, and his tone made it clear he was overstating the case, but his father had been annoyed more than once by his wayward son. "It is nice to meet another."

Legolas laughed in delight as she was clearly shocked by his actions. What sort of world was it that she was from, he wondered, that she would be surprised by dancing? But he was just happy she seemed to be enjoying herself. Her explanation only confused him more, because he didn't see how the males of her world could not do something he found very easy.

"It sounds like a strange land, where you are from, my lady." That seemed safe enough, not too judgemental. "Tell me, what dances do you do there? Perhaps you could show me."

Illyana grinned and shook her head as Legolas wove his slightly exaggerated tale. "I know very well about all of that," she said, adopting a serious tone. "Piotr worries that I'll embarrass him sometimes to the point where he threatens to lock me in my room for days on end." Well, he used to, in jest, before Dallas.

She was enjoying herself. Although not usually one for dancing, Legolas's pleasant mood made even something she disliked seem fun. It was definitely more enjoyable than Stevie's lessons, as much as she loved her dance teacher. However, she had to fight the urge to laugh as Legolas suggested she show him dances from Earth.

"It's a very strange land, where I come from," she agreed with a grin. "More than even I realize sometimes. And dances? Some of them are downright bizzare." She thought carefully, ticking the ones she knew of off in her head. "The dances depend on the time period. Some are popular now, and others were popular in the past. Right now, we're just getting over disco dancing. There's a lot of informal dancing that people my age do. There aren't really any steps. You just...sort of move around however the music strikes you." It was difficult to explain modern dancing. "But adults prefer more structured dances, like waltzes and tangos and fox trots." She thought of Stevie Hunter again. "There are also dances that are more like theater, like moving art, like ballet and jazz and tap. Stuff that's incorporated into plays and concerts. That's the type of dancing we learn at school, since it's best for teaching balance and grace. But most of us prefer the social dances, when we do dance." Except for her dear Kitty, who was so good at all of Stevie's styles of dance. It had been part of what Piotr liked about her.

She looked up at Legolas. "Do your people perform dances like that? As part of a show? Or is all of your dancing more like this, for celebration?"

The prince nodded solemnly, but a mischievious twinkle sparkled in the depths of his eyes. He liked this girl, he decided. She amused him, and anyone who could do that was alright by him. He found himself hoping that they would become friends, because he was enjoying being around her, teaching her to dance. "Family can be the cruelest of all, is it not so?"

He didn't, however, quite get the joke at first. His question had been serious, and he didn't see how it was funny. He waited, however, and his patience was soon rewarded as she began to explain to him. By the end, however, he was honestly confused.

"Such a strange land..." He murmured softly before flashing her a quick smile. He shifted his grip on her, taking her into a typical waltz postion, one hand on her waist and the other holding hers. "This waltz you speak of, though, I have had the pleasure of being shown already." He began to move, leading her through the steps of the waltz. "Lady Sea-hair was kind enough to teach me this. I do not know of this... tango or foxtrot." The latter name had him laughing so hard he could barely dance. "How does one make a dance from the trotting of a fox? It must be an odd dance indeed."

He sobered, though, at least enough to answer her question about elven dancing. "We do not perform, my lady. We celebrate many things through dance, but we do not perform. In fact, it was only upon coming here that I realized what the term meant." He tilted his head to the side and looked down at her. "In my land, elven dancing is not something that one who was not of the elven race would see. Here, it is different... there are no other elves. Still, it is a sacred thing."

Illyana nodded at his mention of family. Not that Piotr was ever cruel - quite the contrary, where she was concerned - but family knew things about you that no one else did, and so could hurt you the deepest if or when they did feel a need to.

She actually felt like she was getting the hang of the dance he'd taught her. Maybe all that ballet practice had paid off. Then, he shifted positions, and Illyana felt the more familiar waltz. She had done this before, and it was simple enough that she could dance and not worry so much about where her feet were. "Lady Sea-hair?" Illyana echoed, wondering whom Legolas meant. What kind of a world had she come from, if that was her name? Was it a poor translation, maybe? She laughed along with the elf at the names of the dances. She shook her head. "I've never understood where the names for some things come from. There was one in the fifties, the Professor told me once, that was called the Mashed Potato." She laughed harder at this. Why in the world would anyone name a dance after food?

She pulled herself together enough to listen to his explanation of elven customs. It was really interesting. No performances? Maybe it was more like Dani's dancing, where her tribe would get together and do their dances all together. It would probably look like a performance to other people, to outsiders, but they wouldn't think of it as such. It was the best way Illyana could think of to understand it.

She looked around the room. "All these people, and you're the only elf?" she asked. That seemed cruel, more cruel than how it was for most. Then again, as far as she knew, she was the only mutant. For Legolas to be all alone, though, made it worse that Aragorn was nowhere to be found. Only one of your kind and your best friend went missing? "Is it weird being the only elf?" she asked. "People don't treat you differently, do they? I mean, they're not mean to you because you're an elf, I hope."

Legolas liked making nicknames for people. It was a bit of a thing for elves, really. Another fun game to play when the years started to get long, and there was little else to do. He forgot, sometimes, being somewhat young and impulsive, that other people couldn't read his mind and know who he was talking about.

"My apologies." He smiled down into her face as he led them competantly through the waltz. "Lady Sea-hair is simply a ephithet for my friend Michiru. Her hair is the exact shade of the sea." There was more to it than that, but most of the details he wasn't entirely clear on. And it didn't seem like a very nice thing to do to go spilling other people's secrets for them.

And then, his explanation was cut off by another round of laughter. Clearly, he wasn't shy about showing when he was amused by something. "A dance named after mashed potatoes?" It seemed like an odd subject to fashion a dance after, and he was pretty much lost in laughter trying to imagine what it would look like. "Foxtrot, mashed potato... I do not know how I would fit in on your world, my lady. I fear I would die of laughter, for you have many strange customs."

He sobered, however, as she asked her question. "I am, I believe, the only elf who has been brought here." He confirmed. "I do not mind it, though. While I was travelling with the Fellowship, I was the only elf there, as well." Two humans, a handful of hobbits, one dwarf... and one elf. "I suppose I am growing rather used to it." He smiled, but there was a wistful note to the expression. "And I have made many good friends." Though he missed his old home, and his old friends, that much was clear, he was determined to make the best of the situation.

A girl with hair the color of the sea? Sounded like she'd fit in at the mansion. Some of the Professor's charges had hair that was weird colors. Polaris had green hair, and Psylocke had purple hair. Maybe this Michiru was a mutant as well? The idea both cheered Illyana and made her worry. But, it was something to deal with later.

Illyana shook her head, grinning, at his mock despair. "I don't really know how I fit in most of the time," she giggled.

She listened to his explanation carefully. He was used to being the odd one out, it sounded like. And he was used to making the best of it. Again, she was reminded of home. While the New Mutants and the X-Men did have each other, there were times when duty took them away and put them alone into a situation. And it was much like herself. She was the only sorceress in a band of mutants, and although her friends loved and trusted her, she was still something different, and she had to deal with that. "I'm glad," she said at last, referring to his statement about making friends. "I'd be upset if anyone decided to target you for being different. I might have to hang them upside down until they apologized, or something." She said it lightly enough, but the threat, vague as it was, was real. She liked Legolas, and hoped they would become better friends. Illyana didn't take kindly to people who hurt her friends. She shuddered slightly, remembering what she'd done to the "man" who'd killed Doug months ago. He'd deserved it, but every now and then what she'd done did genuinely horrify her.

"I wonder, Lady Illyana, if we could meet again sometime?" He looked at her curiously. "I am growing weary of being indoors, I fear, but I have enjoyed speaking with you." The music had temporarily stopped, and he took her hand and bowed politely over it.

It was perfectly true. Being raised as a wood-elf even if he wasn't technically one had had certain effects on him. One was that he simply couldn't tolerate being inside for too long. Already, he longed for the free, fresh air outside. He was getting a little ansty.

He did, however, laugh at her comment. "I am glad you are not an enemy, then. I hope I can call you friend." He frowned thoughtfully. "And should someone harm you, I shall do the same. Is it a deal?" Having paid attention, he knew that humans sealed deals with a handshake, so he offered her one slim, long-fingered hand to shake on it.

"I mean what I say, however... I have enjoyed our conversation, my Lady, and would very much like to meet with you again." Sincerity rang from the tone of the elf, even as he pulled away from her and released her from the hold he'd taken on her waist for the waltz.

"Deal," she said, grasping hold of his offered hand and giving it a firm shake. She'd always been taught to give a confident handshake. "It's been a pleasure talking with you, too, Legolas," she said. She gave him another curtsy, bending low at the knees and bowing her head. "Go enjoy the snow. Just watch out for my army of snowmen by the forest." She grinned as she said this, and there was a trace of laughter in her voice. She understood about feeling cooped up indoors.

"I hope to see you again soon," she said. He reminded her, just a bit, of her brother Piotr. The chivalry. Definitely the chivalry. Piotr had it in spades, and Legolas did as well. "It's been fun."
