Day 3- Fishing
Who: Ayla, John, The Doctor and Miguel
What: Fishing
When: Morning, after breakfast
Where: The Dock/The Lake
Rating: R for nudity
Status: Complete!

Ayla had decided to stay away from the foyer this morning. She didn't want the responsibility of greeting anyone else. It was too hard to explain to new people what had happened to them. There were others that did a much better job of it. Giselle made it look downright easy. So, Ayla figured if she didn't see the flashing light of the new keys, she didn't have to greet anyone.

She went through the back door of the kitchen for some breakfast, and then headed out to see about Whinney and Racer. Both horses nickered when she neared and she began to speak to them in a combination of verbal and sign language. "Good morning, Whinney." When she said the mare's name word, it came out as more of a horse whinney than a name. "Good morning, Racer." She patted the dark steppe horse on his neck and hugged both animals. Whinney was Racer's mother, and Ayla had raised them both.

She finished her breakfast and went back to her room to get some unfinished weaving to take out into the sunshine. That's when she noticed the envelope taped to her door. She opened it and, even though there was no written language in her world, Ayla found that she could understand it. She was to go fishing this morning. Looking thoughtful, she opened her door and left the envelope on the rock formation that looked astonishingly like an end table.

She decided that if she was going to make it down to the dock, she didn't have much time, and she wouldn't be able to finish the basket she had been weaving. She left her amulet in her room. She didn't want to lose it, believeing that if she did she would die. Heading down to the lake on barefeet and graceful steps she found the dock and a golem waiting there.

She saw a boat, although she'd never seen one before arriving in Mirage, with some long poles and a box. She shifted her blue eyes to the golem, knowing that it could only answer yes or no questions. She wasn't quite sure what to ask, though. "Are we supposed to use this for catching fish?" She pointed to the boat, and then looked up to see the Golem nodding. She nodded, too. She didn't know how to use a fishing pole and tackle, so she would do it her own way.

Ayla watched the Doctor, his flustered demeanor and stammering words, and wondered what it was he didn't want everyone else to know. She smiled at him, nodding when he explained his definition of mates. "Language is a fascinating thing, isn't it? It is so complex and so wonderful. There was a time when I didn't know how to speak with anything but my hands." Subconsciously, Ayla had been signing with her hands as she spoke.

She watched him fling the smaller fish back into the water and smiled down at her lap. She didn't want him to think she was laughing at him. She was pleased that rather than keep a fish he wasn't going to eat, he returned it to its place. She planned to eat hers, though. Or, at least give part of them to the golems so that they wouldn't go to waste. Unless she dried the fish, she wouldn't be able to eat it all herself.

She listened as Miguel questioned the Doctor about his species. She didn't quite catch the drift of the conversation and the relevance of the question, but she wanted to understand and sometimes listening was the only way to accomplish that. She tried not to look their way as they spoke. She had been told that eavesdropping, or looking at someone else's hearth, was rude and she didn't want to be rude. So, she just kept her ears open.

She tilted her head back up when John spoke to her again. She shook her head slightly before she answered. "I lived there alone for a long time. Three years, I think. And then one day, I was exploring a part of the valley I had never been to before when I heard a man scream and Baby roar. Whinney and I raced to the sound and found two men badly hurt and Baby was there. He had seriously gored them, and broken one's neck. I pushed Baby away from the one who still lived. The man with hair the color of my own. The first man I had ever seen who looked like me, and not like the Clan. Whinney carried the man back to my cave where I cared for him until he was well. His name was Jondalar." She looked down at her fingers twisting together in her lap. "We were going to leave the valley and find other people of our kind when I was pulled here. But, until Jondalar, there were no other people in my valley. Just animals."

Ayla could not lie. She could only refrain from speaking. But what she had said, was the truth. The whole truth. She looked up again and gave him a small smile. "I have met a good many of the Others since I arrived here. But no Clan." She listened to John explain to the Docto about differences in species, and he mentioned his wife. Ayla wasn't quite sure what that word meant, but she understood from the inflection in his voice that it was someone who meant a great deal to him. She smiled and looked out across the water. She was glad John had a mate. He was such a kind man, he deserved one. A good one.

She had spoken much more on this trip than she had since her arrival. She wasn't sure it was such a good thing, but she couldn't take it back now. She just listened again as John asked about anyone special in Miguel's life.

They fished for quite a bit more time, but soon it was time to head back. The sun was sinking lower in the sky and they had all the fish they wanted or needed. Ayla stood up and began to clean up a few things as the boat headed back toward the dock. She gathered trash and shoved it in a bag set aside for it, then helped the men put their tackle and things back in the boxes. By the time they reached the dock, Ayla was tired and ready to go back to her cave of a room.

"It was nice to meet you, Doctor, Miguel, John." She nodded to each of them in turn as she stepped onto the dock and headed off with both of her fish in hand.
