Day 3- Fishing
Who: Ayla, John, The Doctor and Miguel
What: Fishing
When: Morning, after breakfast
Where: The Dock/The Lake
Rating: R for nudity
Status: Complete!

Ayla had decided to stay away from the foyer this morning. She didn't want the responsibility of greeting anyone else. It was too hard to explain to new people what had happened to them. There were others that did a much better job of it. Giselle made it look downright easy. So, Ayla figured if she didn't see the flashing light of the new keys, she didn't have to greet anyone.

She went through the back door of the kitchen for some breakfast, and then headed out to see about Whinney and Racer. Both horses nickered when she neared and she began to speak to them in a combination of verbal and sign language. "Good morning, Whinney." When she said the mare's name word, it came out as more of a horse whinney than a name. "Good morning, Racer." She patted the dark steppe horse on his neck and hugged both animals. Whinney was Racer's mother, and Ayla had raised them both.

She finished her breakfast and went back to her room to get some unfinished weaving to take out into the sunshine. That's when she noticed the envelope taped to her door. She opened it and, even though there was no written language in her world, Ayla found that she could understand it. She was to go fishing this morning. Looking thoughtful, she opened her door and left the envelope on the rock formation that looked astonishingly like an end table.

She decided that if she was going to make it down to the dock, she didn't have much time, and she wouldn't be able to finish the basket she had been weaving. She left her amulet in her room. She didn't want to lose it, believeing that if she did she would die. Heading down to the lake on barefeet and graceful steps she found the dock and a golem waiting there.

She saw a boat, although she'd never seen one before arriving in Mirage, with some long poles and a box. She shifted her blue eyes to the golem, knowing that it could only answer yes or no questions. She wasn't quite sure what to ask, though. "Are we supposed to use this for catching fish?" She pointed to the boat, and then looked up to see the Golem nodding. She nodded, too. She didn't know how to use a fishing pole and tackle, so she would do it her own way.

She waited patiently for John to return, wondering why he needed to do something before helping her into the boat. When he returned with a soft pink cloth, Ayla smiled. She was not entirely ignorant of a towel's uses. She had them in the bathroom in her cave. They were made of animal skin, but they were just as absorbent.

As soon as he hauled her into the boat, the large pink towel was wrapped around her and she tried not to laugh. He was acting so strangely, as if her nakedness was something to be ashamed of or embarrassed by. "Thank you, John." She smiled radiantly at him and turned to grab her wrap. She shed the towel with her backs to them and pulled her wrap over her head, tying it securely at her waist. Sitting down on the cushioned bench, she used the towel to dry her arms and legs before folding it and laying it out to dry.

Ayla watched Miguel bait his hook and nearly take a piece of his cheek off with it while he was trying to cast. His second attempt was more successful and she waited with him, to see if anything would catch hold. She wanted to get a better look at these sticks and hooks that they were trying to catch fish with. She reached for a hook and examined it. The sharp barbs looked like they would go through skin but be difficult to extract if it were pulled back out. It was a good idea.

She then took one of the extra poles and examined it, finding that the hooks tied to the ends of the clear line that ran the length of it. She still wasn't sure how it all worked and how you got the fish to bite the hook, but she figured that once it had bitten down on the hook, the line would help bring it into the boat. Ayla preferred her method of fishing, but she couldn't fault the men for not knowing how to do it.

The golem took them further out onto the lake and exited the cabin to pick up Ayla's fish and put them in an empty cooler full of ice water. They were dead already, but at least they wouldn't rot that way. She grinned at the Doctor when he quipped that they had some catching up to do. She hadn't been around many men of the Others. Only Clan men. Jondalar had been the first man of the Others she had seen, so it was a little overwhelming and quite interesting to observe them.

When she found that she was hungry, she went down into the cabin and looked through the fridge. She took out a bottle of water. She was used to them now, but when she'd first seen the clear plastic bottles, she hadn't known what to think. She also took out a parchment paper wrapped sandwich. She had grown used to these as well. They were always stocked in the kitchen fridges and she had been pleasantly surprised by the way they combined grains and meats and vegetables in one hand-held item.

She went back out on deck with her food and sat back down on the cushioned bench, crossing her legs Indian-style and watching the men work. Maybe after she had watched them for a time she would try it herself.
