Day Fourteen
Who: Legolas and Susan
What: Friendly archery contest
When: Day 14, after lunch with Haruka and Michiru
Where: Somewhere outside? With, um, an archery range? The Planet can make that happen, right?
Rating: I doubt this would go above a PG, if that.
Status: Complete

Lunch was over, and Legolas had another appointment today. He hadn't forgotten his promise to the young human queen, Susan. When he'd met her and introduced her to Mirage, he'd suggested that they see who was better with the bow. Nothing really serious, of course. A fun, light-hearted contest, just to see who knew how to handle their bow better.

To some, it might look like Susan had no chance. She was only a child, young even by human standards, and he'd had nearly a thousand years to perfect his skill with the weapon. But he wasn't going to brush her off so lightly. After all, he'd seen the easy, comfortable way that she carried the bow. He wouldn't be surprised if she knew how to use it. Still, chances were good that he was better than her, just because of the experience he had. Still, he thought, it would be an entertaining experience. She would be a challenge.

After lunch, he'd gone back to his room and dressed quickly in an outfit more comfortable and suited to the task at hand. Fancy clothes were all very well and good for lunching, but not for an archery contest. Quickly, he got ready, and then headed for the spot he was to meet Susan. Along the way, he made sure to focus on the contest, so the Planet would provide the necessary targets.

Sure enough, when he got there, all was ready. He would use his own bow, and there were all sorts of things to shoot at. Everything from bullseyes to tin cans to shoot down, and even dummies. The Planet clearly didn't do anything by half measures. He smiled and nodded to himself in satisfaction as he looked around. He couldn't wait for Susan to get here, so they could get started.

"Perhaps so. Likely, unless we ever need to go hunting for real in a forest, we will never know. For that is probably the only way I could truly take it seriously."

He looked intently at the arrow she'd shot into the tree, far away. Even his eyes had a hard time picking out the shaft in the tree. But he was, after all, an elf, and eventually located it.

Very slowly, he drew an arrow from his quiver. He was perfectly relaxed. It was, he'd found, the only way to make long shots like this. He set the arrow to the bow and drew it back.

Releasing it, it flew toward the target. He watched calmly as it neared the tree. It was a hard shot. He wouldn't beat himself up if he didn't make it. But he smiled.

Though she probably couldn't see it, her arrow was split exactly in half by his.
