Day Fourteen
Who: Legolas and Susan
What: Friendly archery contest
When: Day 14, after lunch with Haruka and Michiru
Where: Somewhere outside? With, um, an archery range? The Planet can make that happen, right?
Rating: I doubt this would go above a PG, if that.
Status: Complete

Lunch was over, and Legolas had another appointment today. He hadn't forgotten his promise to the young human queen, Susan. When he'd met her and introduced her to Mirage, he'd suggested that they see who was better with the bow. Nothing really serious, of course. A fun, light-hearted contest, just to see who knew how to handle their bow better.

To some, it might look like Susan had no chance. She was only a child, young even by human standards, and he'd had nearly a thousand years to perfect his skill with the weapon. But he wasn't going to brush her off so lightly. After all, he'd seen the easy, comfortable way that she carried the bow. He wouldn't be surprised if she knew how to use it. Still, chances were good that he was better than her, just because of the experience he had. Still, he thought, it would be an entertaining experience. She would be a challenge.

After lunch, he'd gone back to his room and dressed quickly in an outfit more comfortable and suited to the task at hand. Fancy clothes were all very well and good for lunching, but not for an archery contest. Quickly, he got ready, and then headed for the spot he was to meet Susan. Along the way, he made sure to focus on the contest, so the Planet would provide the necessary targets.

Sure enough, when he got there, all was ready. He would use his own bow, and there were all sorts of things to shoot at. Everything from bullseyes to tin cans to shoot down, and even dummies. The Planet clearly didn't do anything by half measures. He smiled and nodded to himself in satisfaction as he looked around. He couldn't wait for Susan to get here, so they could get started.

Susan had stopped by her room long enough to get the bow and arrows hidden under the bed and to change. Little does anyone know but she is battle skilled and while in Narnia had fought in 2 different wars. "Sorry for the delay!" came the young queen's cheerful call,"Got a bit lost since I'm still trying to learn where things are"

He turned gracefully torward her as she approach, and smiled brightly in greeting. He nodded and waved off her apology, as he eyed her appraisingly. Would she have the strength to even bend back the bow as far as he could? He didn't see how, really. And he wondered if her bow was magical, as was his that the Lady Galadriel had given him.

"Think no more on it, my Queen. I do not think you are late. Besides, until you arrived, there could be no contest. Therefore, it is impossible that you be anything but on time."

It made sense to him, even if the logic was a little weak. He smiled and raised a challenging eyebrow at her. Without even thinking, without seeming to need to aim, he grabbed an arrow out of his quiver and in one smooth motion had it in the bow. He let it fly, and it hit into the exact center of a bullseye.

"Your turn, I believe, my Queen."

Susan drew her arrow and easily hit the bulls-eye of the first target. "A small confession sir Legolas, I was trained in battle while in Narnia" she revealed. She had never really spoken of battle against the White Witch or Caspian's uncle Miraz.

This confession met with slightly less than shock on the part of the elf. He only nodded, and even shrugged a little. If she'd been hoping for a big reaction, she clearly wasn't going to get one out of him. After all, he'd seen the way she carried her bow, and the grace she had. He would have been surprised if she hadn't known what she was doing.

"Well, that makes this more of a challenge. Though, I would be willing to bet you have not been practicing for nearly a thousand years, as I have."

With a challenging grin, he moved on to the next target, slightly farther away. Again, there was no problem to the sharp-eyed elf in hitting it.

Susan aimed and easily hit the tin can that was aimed a little further out, sending the can flying in its wake. "You do have me there" her gentle smile and quiet nature in full bloom.

He watched with a slight smile on his face, and then shrugged and gestured. One of the targets, a large bullseye, slid backwards quite a bit. Why not make this interesting? Neither of them was having the slightest bit of trouble with the targets near at hand. The bullseye stopped far out, probably too far for most normal people to hit with a bow.

But neither of them was a normal person. He aimed this time, and the arrow flew straight and true into the exact center of the bullseye. To him, it might as well have been right next to him.

"There... that should make things more interesting, do you not think so?"

"I do not really speak of the battles against Miraz or the White Witch so very much so" as Susan took aim at a further off target. She told of a friendly contest back in Narnia against one of the locals while she and her family were helping Caspian,"I still worry, about the people like Caspian,Tummus and Mr and Mrs Beaver" she confessed.

"I understand, my Queen. There is much I do not speak of, either."

He watched as she took aim, with a slight smile on his face. He'd expected her to do well, yes, but she was exceeding even his expectations. Impressive, for a human. Or even really for anyone, now that he thought about it.

"Back home, there are those I am concerned about. But be of good cheer, Susan. I am sure that it will all work out for your friends in your own world."

"Caspian is a noble man so I do not worry about him as much but my family is where my heart does worry. Especially since Lucy is so young" as Susan took aim and sent the arrow flying into the dummy.

He listened as she spoke, recognizing her need to talk of home, as they moved from target to target. Finally, he pointed to a tree that was so far away, a human could barely see it, let alone hit it. He could see it better, but it would be a difficult shot, even for him.

"Do you think you can make that shot?"

As he waited for her to decide, he knew it wasn't really fair to expect her to make a shot at a target she could barely see. But his mischievious nature made him at least ask.

"Lucy... who is she? I suppose we all have those we left behind..."

"No harm in making a go and Lucy is my younger sister, Peter and Edmund are my brothers" as Susan took aim. She had gotten pretty good at long distance targets while with Caspian and it was coming into play for something beyond warfare.

"I see. You are fortunate, I have no siblings."

He watched calmly as she drew back her bow, wondering if she could somehow manage to hit a target she could barely see. He wasn't even completely sure if he could hit it, but like she said, no harm in making a go of it.

Susan pretended the target was a far off solider from the battle with Caspian and easily hit the target. "How about you? There must be people from your world you wonder about"

He was getting bored. This wasn't actually all that unusual. Of course, if he was hunting something, he would be relentless. But in a case like this, well, a friendly archery competition couldn't keep his full attention for long.

"I grow bored of this, Queen Susan. If I am somehow able to shoot your arrow exactly in half, I would claim the title of victor. If not, you do. Agreed?"

He squinted, knowing it would be a hard shot. But he was almost sure he could do it. Her question had her turning to her with slightly raised eyebrows.

"Yes, of course. My father, for one. And the fate of the Ring that will plunge my world into eternal darkness if it is not destroyed. The one I would think most on, though, has come here to me. Fortunate for me, but not exactly so for Middle Earth."

"Sounds fair enough" Susan set her arrow up, happy to have extras stashed back in her room. "But in all fairness we are more than equals as shots, granted with different training and battle experience"

"Perhaps so. Likely, unless we ever need to go hunting for real in a forest, we will never know. For that is probably the only way I could truly take it seriously."

He looked intently at the arrow she'd shot into the tree, far away. Even his eyes had a hard time picking out the shaft in the tree. But he was, after all, an elf, and eventually located it.

Very slowly, he drew an arrow from his quiver. He was perfectly relaxed. It was, he'd found, the only way to make long shots like this. He set the arrow to the bow and drew it back.

Releasing it, it flew toward the target. He watched calmly as it neared the tree. It was a hard shot. He wouldn't beat himself up if he didn't make it. But he smiled.

Though she probably couldn't see it, her arrow was split exactly in half by his.
