Who: Jareth and Sarah Williams
What: Aftermath
When: Day 33, mid-morning
Where: Just outside Jareth's room, to start
Status: Complete
Rating: PG-ish

Although he'd lived for more years than humans had even existed for, he'd never had a day like the one he'd had yesterday. It seemed there were a lot of 'nevers' going on in his life recently, actually. He'd never been kidnapped before, only now Mirage had changed that. He'd never been bowling before... and he chose not to think much about that, But above all, he'd never had coffee with his nemesis, and had never expected to. Even kings who had been alive for thousands of years don't know everything, apparently.

Though no one would have known it simply by looking at him, he was still hashing the whole thing over in his mind. What had happened, and why? In the end, though, he'd been able to come to only one conclusion. He wasn't exactly sure the why and how of it all, but he was sure of one thing. He hadn't hated anything that had happened, no matter how awkward it had been. Perhaps that was enough.

He'd gone back to his room after the odd chat with Sarah, and been there ever since, thinking it through. Now, however, it was time to get out of there. So he left the room that was the spitting image of his throne room in the Castle at the center of the Labyrinth, after dressing in his more typcial Fae style. Jeremy, it would seem, was not an everyday sort of thing here. And he was much more comfortable in the outlandish, romantic clothing he favored. Mortal clothing was so strange.

The king didn't have any particular plans, he just didn't want to spend any more time in his room. So, thinking he would perhaps take a walk (and just happen to stroll past Sarah's room), he turned the doorknob and stepped out his door into the hallway beyond it.

Sarah's room, when she had returned to it last night, had not changed significantly. The dress and the wreath of flowers had disappeared as she'd hoped and she had only had a few moments of wondering whether or not this really was as she'd suspected -- a trick of Jareth's again -- before sleep overtook her. She fell easily into bed with her clothes on, her exhaustion so complete that she was sleeping in minutes.

Dreams did not come for the first part of the night; she slept deeply, restoratively. But she woke some time later in the darkness and her mind began working, thinking about everything that had happened. She'd gone to bed at home and, in a whirlwind of fear, been pulled to this bizarre Planet. Only to be forced face to face with the one person who thoroughly terrified and confused her. And then, somewhere along the way, they had danced a delicate few steps around each other and there had been two kisses. Sarah thought she would never be able to fall back asleep as her thoughts ran through all of the events over and over again but eventually she drifted off again.

Awakening to sunshine in a golden sheen across the unwanted bedroom made it a bit better and she felt herself smiling as she got to her feet and dressed. Today held the promise of even more adventure and after yesterday that didn't scare her as much as she had expected it would. It was actually a very infectious hope that she didn't realize had infused itself into her entire being until she was looking in the mirror of her vanity, putting too much care into making her hair look effortless and romantic and humming the tune from her old music box with a serene smile on her face.

"Oh Sarah, you're not!" she laughed at her reflection. "I have to get out of this room."

She was laughing at herself still as she opened the door of her room and stepped into the hallway, nearly colliding with Jareth.

Sometimes he started wondering if the Planet was conspiring against him. He'd no more than thought of Sarah and left his room than she should appear. And yet, somehow he couldn't mind that, even though he loathed the thought that he may be being controlled. But if so, so be it. Honestly, he could think of worse fates, much, much worse.

He shut the door behind him, not entirely sure how she would react to seeing how his room looked. And he had only the slightest glimpse into her own room, but he didn't need much more. He had, after all, made an exact copy of that very room in his labyrinth, just for her. He doubted he would be likely to forget it anytime soon.

He didn't, however, stare. Not at her closing door, anyway. It wouldn't be completely inaccurate to say he was, however, staring at her. She'd done something really nice with her hair, and she was laughing... and not in a bitter or sardonic way, in a way that seemed actually happy, or at least amused. He couldn't seem to help but smile back in response to the sound.

"What amuses you?" He asked before shaking his head. "No, that's not quite right. Good morning, Sarah, I hope you slept well." He deliberately didn't comment on her room, wondering if she would feel self-conscious about how it looked. "Where are you off to?" It was trange, he decided, how he'd changed. Not exactly either Jareth or Jeremy, but rather something in between. At least where she was concerned.

"Oh!" Sarah said and felt her cheeks flush, startled to see him so quickly after having left her room. She'd thought she might have to wander around the place a while before finding him. She figured she had slept so long that he was likely to be off doing something else somewhere else.

"I hadn't thought I-" she began and then laughed again, easily. "Good morning to you too. I slept okay. No nightmares, which I guess is good considering the way I would always wake up at home with -" And she stopped again, this time biting her lip. Chattering nervously was not going to help her in this situation. Especially when it was leading her toward topics that would just remind him of the past.

Though she supposed that conversation hadn't quite been finished last night. They still had more to discuss, she was sure of it. They hadn't even spoken about the terms of their truce or anything but damn, his eyes. They were penetrating today and she felt herself warm even further whenever he looked at her.

"Um, did you sleep well? Er, do you sleep?" she asked, trying to force some lightness back into her tone.

"I'll understand if you don't exactly rush to accept this offer, but I could make you sleep without dreams at all." He hadn't really intended to make the offer, but he wanted to help. Odd, really, considering he normally would have been completely unconcerned about anyone's sleeping problems.

He smiled at her slightly and shrugged. "I sleep. In fact, I know of very few things that don't. At least on Earth." And he had mostly kept his scrying to those realms. "Without sleep, the mind becomes disordered, concentration is shot straight to hell..." He stopped, and noticed with a sense of amusement that he was rambling now. "Yes, I sleep."

For awhile, he looked at her, and then decided all at once to speak again. "It occurs to me that yesterday, I hardly gave you a proper tour of the resort. There is much to do here." He sneered slightly, remembering the bowling from a couple of days ago, and not at all fondly. But it wasn't all as had as that. "Would you care to see the rest?" It gave them an excuse to be together, and in a less intense way then they had been yesterday.

"Sleep without dreams? How could you -? No, that's fine. Thank you for the offer though." She smiled slightly and shook her head. The only way she could imagine him being able to do what he'd just suggested was to either find a way into her mind -- no way would she want him to see what was in there! -- or use his magic on her. And she was just not ready to trustingly allow him to do that to her. They'd made some progress but she was still wary on that front.

It was nice to know that he slept though. It was no wonder though, as he talked about how disordered the mind became with lack of sleep, that she had been so befuddled for so long. But she highly doubted that would be a problem -- not too much at least -- anymore. Her smile broadened as he began to follow suit and chatter away himself. That struck her as funny and she giggled as he said simply, "Yes, I sleep."

Vaguely she remembered that a tour was supposed to have been in order yesterday but it hadn't happened. They couldn't very well go for coffee again, that would get boring, and there didn't seem anything else safe to do at this point since she was not familiar enough with this place. So she smiled at him and stepped closer as though to walk beside him when he chose to move.

"Yes, please show me around this Planet." She could almost feel a vibration of energy between their bodies. A shuffle slightly further away from him and the sensation lessened ever so slightly. How interesting... "What else have you been doing here since you were first brought here by the Planet?"

She moved slightly closer again and without really thinking about it, made to slip her arm into his.

With gritted teeth, Jareth listened to her as she spoke of her former life. She really hadn't volunteered much about it, only a few very important details about what it had been like. Now, he was realizing all in a rush, she must have had an entire life... three years was a long time, especially to a mortal. By the end of her words, he was having a hard time keeping control of himself.

It was about this time that he wished he had this Jack in front of him. He might have changed a bit from the creature he'd been while in the labyrinth, but the king still lurked beneath the surface somewhere. Oh, but he would enjoy putting this man into the Bog of Eternal Stench... or any of the other sundry torments he could dream up. A soft, and fairly unpleasant, smile touched his lips for a second.

"Until you nearly what, Sarah?" He glanced over at her and then back at the building, keeping his arm in hers. Yes, he was acting stupidly. And he knew it, too, but then he'd threatened one of his own creatures, Hoggle, and Hoggle hadn't even remotely suggested that he wanted to marry Sarah.

Still in step, they walked toward the main building, with one very jealous goblin king trying to tell himself he wasn't. It wasn't working so well, truth to be told.

She felt his body language change after she'd mentioned Jack and mentally she kicked herself for bringing him up so easily. It had hardly been the time and place, just after they'd shared a dangerous kiss. A kiss that could have been the avenue to the center of more than one labyrinth. Least of all, Jareth's real thoughts and feelings.

Still, he was not pulling away or leaving. The look on his face might be hard and a little sad to see for her after he'd been open and almost self-conscious only moments ago. But she knew it wouldn't make anything better for her to brush it off. She'd said it. She'd mentioned Jack and she'd ruined the moment. That was all there was to it. She wouldn't ruin it more by fully explaining.

"Please don't ask me. It's -- embarrassing now. I've come a long way and completely outgrown Jack. I sent his ring back. I told him I never wanted to see him again. That was how much he'd hurt me."

Everything had been going to well, and now it was awkward again between them. He knew it was his fault, because of his stupid, irrational jealousy. Quite honestly, though, he didn't have the first idea of how to stop such an emotion. He wasn't exactly used to worrying about that sort of thing. He wanted something, he went after it, and he got it. There was no need to keep unpleasant emotions under control.

Still, he took a deep breath and nodded. "As you wish." They were nearly at the restaurant now, a place where a real sit down meal could be had. It had already been an eventful morning, and Jareth was hungry. Also, it kept him in Sarah's presense for awhile longer, and despite how things kept changing back and forth between them, he wanted that.

He desperately wanted something to say to her to make things right between them, or as right as they got. A few short minutes ago, they had been kissing with a passion that he had rarely felt in his entire long life. Now, there were no words. It didn't seem fair, somehow.

He had obviously forgotten, in his thousands of years alive, what it was like to be a teenager on the cusp of adulthood. Or perhaps his kind didn't go through the same angst and confusion with self when they were young. Either way, Sarah felt a little immature for how this was all turning out. It was all moving at a rapid pace and she wasn't sure what she was really doing half the time. This was a lot to get used to all at once.

She did know that the shift in their relationship from antagonism to what it was now -- what was it? -- was something she did not want to lose. So, as they approached the restaurant and her senses were filled with the wonderful smell of food and her long forgotten stomach began its protestations again, she leaned her cheek on his arm. He was still, after all, the one who had comforted her only moments ago when she'd been more afraid than she'd been in her life.

"You never told me what it is you like to eat, Sir," she said in a quiet, hopefully soothing tone. "Do they serve goblin fare here?"

Jareth felt the touch of her cheek on his arm, and he glanced down with a slight smile. The truth was, he felt sort of bewildered by the whole thing. This was, of course, not a comfortable feeling for him, nor one he intended to show. But so much had changed in such a short time. But that's how it was with mortals, he'd noticed. They had to go faster because of being able to die of old age. But this seemed even beyond that.

"They will bring whatever you ask, but goblin food is not to my liking." Of course, he could eat it, as he could eat anything, but it was coarse stuff, not particularly tasty. "When given my choice, I eat mortal food." In Faerie, they had fed on magic and dew, but he'd been kicked out from there and, anyway, he imagined that even that would get boring after thousands of years.

"And obviously protien bars aren't to your liking..." He raised an eyebrow at her, struggling to get the same tone they'd had between them before. "What do you like to eat, Sarah? Pomegranates?" Another allusion to his nickname for her, though he didn't know if she'd pick it up.

She fidgeted with her chopsticks as she chewed, savoring the perfect flavors of each bite she took. Either this Planet had kidnapped the most renowned chefs to provide the best tasting food for its other captives, or the way she was feeling was affecting how she tasted and took in everything around her. It was brilliant, really. Whatever it was, she was enjoying herself immensely. Sushi for breakfast!

"Mm, yes, I have no plans to be anywhere or with anyone else," she murmured between bites. "Maybe, if we run out of things to see, we could go play miniature golf or something." She was very obviously teasing him but her tone conveyed more affection than mocking. Her mental image of him in full kingly regalia, putting a tiny ball into a hole shaped like a clown's gaping red mouth, made her grin to herself.

Slyly, she snatched glances of him from beneath her lashes, happy to have the necessity of food to keep her eyes elsewhere whenever he might choose to look at her again. Her thoughts wandered too and she caught herself paused mid-bite, grinning at nothing again.

"But, um," she said, recovering. "I don't want to monopolize you though. Don't feel as though you have to stick with me if you - if you don't want to."

That comment about the miniature golf got her a dirty look, but unfortunately it was slightly ruined by the slight twitch at the corner of his lips. If any of the creatures of his labyrinth had seen him now, they quite simply wouldn't believe it. That comment should have had him raging at her. Instead, he was slightly amused by the whole thing. Strange.

"I don't think you should hold your breath waiting for that to happen." Unbidden, the mental image of him trying to play mini golf popped into his head, and he pursed his lips to try and keep from laughing. Even he knew how ridiculous that would make him look. Which, of course, meant he would be avoiding it at all costs. "No, my dear, I think you would have an easier time convincing me to go sunbathing."

The food was rapidly disappearing from his plate, and he realized with some surprise just how hungry he'd actually been. Of course, he'd stayed in his room longer than was his habit this morning, so it shouldn't be too much of a shock. Everything was excellent, and he took a sip of green tea to finish of the meal with a satisfied noise.

"If I ever do get back home, I believe I will send my cooks here to be trained." Of course, his home was a ruin now. He'd have a lot of work to do if he did want to go back there. But he didn't go into that. It would violate the terms of their unspoken truce, in his eyes. That was the last thing he wanted to do. So instead, he just watched as she ate her own meal.

"Consider me happy to be monopolized." In all honesty, he couldn't think of a single other place he'd like to be right now.

It was strange. He seemed to be in her mind or at least on the same wavelength all of a sudden. He was holding back a laugh as she grinned and she could've sworn it was because he'd pictured what she had. But perhaps that was hoping for a little too much. The look he'd given her before he'd attempted not to laugh had been enough to tell her that she ought to back off from teasing him.

Yes, it was too familiar for her to be teasing him. He'd even brought up his home. The one he still was under the impression that she had destroyed, she'd put money on that. Albeit he'd seemed to be in her head again when he mentioned cooks. And there she went reading too far into everything and making herself confused. Better to remain on the surface and take it all just at face value.

She leaned forward, pushing away the remnants of her meal. She had ordered too much and at least half of what had been brought still sat on her plate. She was searching for something to say, anything to not be sitting here thinking for so long.

So it was for lack of anything coming to her mind that she bluntly asked, "Why are you being so nice to me? Why don't you hate me? You should, you know."

Jareth watched as their plates and dishes disappeared into nothing. It was a bit surprising to him to be at the dubious mercy of something else. Normally, when things happened around him, it was because he'd done something. He wasn't at all sure he liked not being the one in control, but then, no one had exactly asked him.

Her question didn't get any response at first, he just looked at her calmly and thought about it. After awhile, he shrugged eloquently with one shoulder. "Perhaps for the same reason you don't hate me." Such a strange thing to say, and what did it even mean? But it felt true, anyway, so he let it stand.

Once the food had disappeared, he rose to his feet once more. "Would you like to see the inside or the outside?" He had slightly more idea of what the outside of the resort was like, but thought he could probably muddle through either way.

"I see." It wasn't as much of an answer as she had hoped for but it would do. Except now she could clearly see that they had not actually reached a truce. What they'd really done is erect a wall between themselves and what had happened in the past. And proceeded to just ignore it. She knew she had not simply let go of all of it but she was not going to open that can of worms. Let it come around naturally -- before one or the other of them ignited like a short fuse -- and leave it be as long as possible.

She stood as he did, hair falling partially across her face and gazed through the window to the grass and trees outside. "It looks like a beautiful day. Let's see the outside first? Is there anything here in particular that you wanted to show me?"

And she started walking to the door, pushing it open and holding it for him from the outside as she waited for him to follow. It was a bit chilly and she wished she'd brought a jacket but the sunlight was beautiful. It warmed her mood a great deal so she smiled with a mild pleasantness up into the sky, eyes closed.

His touch on her hair set her skin tingling and she gasped softly. It was the gentle, almost tender things he did that caught her so off guard and recalled to mind the kiss of earlier. What would it be like to be in his arms again and this time not feel so confounded by everything? What would it be like to simply surrender? She'd thought about that so many times over the years but now that she had some emotional basis, the idea was more tangible and she more excitable.

She found herself simply staring at him as he spoke about bridges, lightly licking her lower lip in thought, and then he put his cloak about her and it was so warm. It smelled of him and she breathed it in, still somewhat lost in the reverie.

"Thank you," she murmured, the ring suddenly weighing heavy on her fingers and her mind.

"N-no," she laughed suddenly because there was no possible way she could fathom sincerity behind his words. "Be serious, Jareth. I don't think the diamond engagement ring is a look that would mesh well with your entire..." And she swallowed back certain words to giggle again. "You shouldn't tease me like that. And anyway, this is a relic from my past. I don't know why it's here."

Jareth finished arranging the cloak, glad that she didn't protest. When he was done, he stepped slightly away. She seemed to stop shivering a little, at least, which he saw as a good sign. Once she was settled, he continued to look down at her for a long moment before finally setting off toward the river once more. Too easy to get lost in those green eyes.

He raised an eyebrow at her, a slight smile on his face as he glanced over his shoulder at her. He reached behind himself and caught her gently around the wrist. Tugging her up so that she was in step with him, he didn't let go of her. Instead, his hand slid down until it was linked with hers. It seemed much more intense somehow to hold hands rather than arms. But maybe that was just him.

"What a pity." He glanced down at the ring and then back into her face once more. "Who said I wasn't being serious? I usually am." He continued walking, outwardly as calm as if they had been talking about the best sort of cheese to go with a nice Chardonnay. "I see... the infamous Jack, I imagine?" His words held a slight edge, which he immediately regretted. He couldn't allow her to manipulate him, and if she picked up on how jealous he was, she would have the power to do that.

Sarah shoved the ring back into her pocket and pulled the cloak closer about her shoulders, more to breathe in his lingering smell than to be warmer. Then she stumbled forward with an awkward chuckle as he tugged her into step with him. She knew immediately that holding his hand would be the undoing of her. They fit together too perfectly. And now she was too warm for the cloak but she refused to part with it until he asked for it back.

"I know you're usually serious. It's just that..." Her voice trailed off because she couldn't think of a single reason to say why she should have thought he had been teasing her. "I don't know what to say."

She bit her lip and studied his profile from the corner of her eye as they walked. "Yes, it was from Jack. I'd put it in an envelope and mailed it back to him earlier in the day before I was brought here. I that wasn't a sign that he's here somewhere."

Jareth knew he probably should drop her hand as soon as she'd drawn level with him. But he didn't, and his choice was based purely on desire to be close to her. The river was ahead, and the rush of the water was bright and cheerful, and getting louder as they approached. Serendipitously, it seemed they were heading right for a bridge. Sometimes he wondered just how much attention the planet paid to what was said between two people.

"It's just that I couldn't have been serious about such a thing." He smiled cooly at her and then shrugged. "I understand. And, of course, there's one other thing that usually helps a marriage be successful." Time after time, he seemed to keep bringing this conversation back to dangerous ground. He was starting to suspect himself of doing it on purpose.

This time, with some major effort, his face only twitched slightly as she spoke of Jack. "Well, perhaps we will be lucky enough to run into him if he is..."

Sarah cast him a sharp look as he suggested a hope of running into Jack. "Why would you hope to run into Jack? I can't think of a possible scenario in which that would be a good thing for any of us."

He'd run that statement in after he'd spoken about marriage so it hadn't quite settled into her mind that he sounded a little put out at her assumption until after she'd begun to feel annoyed about the possibility of Jack being somewhere here on the planet. When it did work its way into her mind, she shot him another sharp, quizzical glance.

"Why would you be serious about something like a marriage proposal. From me of all people? That makes no sense at all, Jareth."

She thought back to their first conversation on the planet when he'd made such a point of telling her he'd never said he loved her. That she had been the one to assume that was what he'd said. He was not going to twist her around in that again if she could help it.

"No more games of semantics and implications, please?"

She carefully let go of his hand in such a way as for it not to seem as though she were angry -- because oh she wasn't! -- and picked up her pace so that she would be standing in the middle of the bridge before he reached her.

A smirk found it's way onto his features. "It would be an honor to fight him for you." And a lot of fun, too. Though he rather suspected that she was right, that Jareth would likely destroy him in whatever way was possible. He knew himself to be a little bit like that, especially once his heart got involved.

"No? Then you aren't thinking." He crossed over the stones of the pretty little bridge, the heels of his riding boots tapping on the hard surface. Once more, he wondered at himself. Why was he continuing on with this line of conversation, when she would likely let it go if he let her? He couldn't be quite sure what his motivations were, to be truthful. Which didn't actually bother him that much, as he rarely thought about things like that.

"If this were my bridge, I would give it to you." He sat on the wide stone railing, somehow managing to look completely at his ease despite the awkward position. His mismatched eyes turned to the pretty little river, and he watched as a leaf swirled lazily downstream. "It isn't, though, so I'll have to think of some other gift for you."

"A gift? Will you give me a wish to make right here and now on one of your crystals or-"

The gift of knowledge is always a winning one, she thought almost coldly and then chastised herself. She couldn't be angry with him for not saying any more than he did. She couldn't just expect it to be easy or that he would even be so much as enamored of her anymore. That seemed like too much to hope for after everything. Still, actions spoke louder than words and he had been behaving very strangely today. If he were anyone else she might allow herself the luxury of imagining... but it always stopped short of belief because it was Jareth after all.

"I'm thinking a great deal. I'm surprised you can't hear the wheels turning in my mind or translate my long pauses of wordlessness into the fact that I'm thinking." Her tongue began to trip over her words as she started rambling. "I think you should either stop asking me to make assumptions that are likely to make an "ass" out of you and me or be satisfied with the fact that you have completely stumped me and be done with it."

She swallowed and glanced at him, taking a deep breath and adding, with a note of sheepishness because her voice had started to raise, "Please."

With a slight smile, one barely noticable, he gestured. Out of nowhere, one of his crystals appeared, and he held it up for inspection. "If you want." He began to play with the sphere idly as he continued to look out at the beautiful river. Unlike the previous day, he didn't change it into other fanciful objects, it remained a sphere.

Honestly, he didn't even realize he was doing it. He'd done it so often that it was second nature. When bored or simply thinking, the crystals came out. Of course, they also came out when he was trying to enthrall someone, but that wasn't his intention right at the moment.

"My escaped Persephone has not lost her sharp tongue, I see..." But he hardly seemed displeased with that. Even back in the labyrinth, when she'd stood up to him, he'd been sort of reluctantly impressed with her nerve. As time went on and she continued to defy him, that respect and admiration had grown. "Well, I thought it was obvious." His eyes flicked over to her, and then stayed fixed there.

"Please? Please what, Sarah? Please tell you why I would be serious about wanting to marry you? Or please stop asking you to make assumptions about what's going on in my head?"

Sarah turned fully to face him, his cloak falling from her shoulders as she held to it with one hand. It was a purposeful move and she felt her chin lift. He'd finally pushed the right buttons and she was exactly who she'd been years ago in his labyrinth whether she wanted to be or not.

"You were the one who made it very clear that I knew nothing about what went on in your head. How can you possibly ask me to guess about it now? It's not fair for you to continue the conversation if you're not willing to say things yourself and you know it. I don't care what you say. I have a definite basis of comparison this time."

She watched him play idly with his crystal and it made her want to snatch it from his fingers and wish something he'd hate granting. Nothing horrible but something that might force him to stop playing games. She'd had enough of them and it was bringing back all of the claustrophobic memories of being trapped in his maze trying to save her innocent brother from a fate she'd wished him away to so naively.

She squared her shoulders and stared him down. Her expression was one of determination and not anger though. She was not going to be passive while he toyed with her no matter how much sushi he ate or coffee he drank with her. Now was the revealing moment. This was either entirely his doing or it was fate of some strange sort.

The crystal stilled in his hand and he looked at her thoughtfully. He seemed calm and composed, but inwardly, he was kicking himself. Yet he'd brought it to this place, and he couldn't deny that. He'd escalated matters until they became this. It was just a little unnerving to have her speaking to him like that. He had to blink a few times to make sure that they hadn't somehow travelled back in time.

"We're back to things not being fair?" He arched an eyebrow at her and tilted his head slightly to the side, as if she were some fascinating thing to study. "Fine. It's not fair for me to not say things. I don't suppose it ever occured to you that I might have reasons for not wanting to say certain things."

He threw the crystal up in the air and it disappeared. No magic came from it, however. He'd just banished it for now. "No. It's personally inconvienant to you that I won't speak. Which raises an interesting question, Sarah..." He looked at her rather sharply. "Why do you care, exactly? Why would it matter to you?"

The truce... he suddenly wasn't so sure about it. Where did it stand? But these things would likely have to come out, and if they danced around it, nothing would ever really change. So while he was no longer as cruel as he had been before, no longer the cocky and arrogant king, he was going to stand up for himself. He really couldn't do anything else.
