Who: Jareth and Sarah Williams
What: Aftermath
When: Day 33, mid-morning
Where: Just outside Jareth's room, to start
Status: Complete
Rating: PG-ish

Although he'd lived for more years than humans had even existed for, he'd never had a day like the one he'd had yesterday. It seemed there were a lot of 'nevers' going on in his life recently, actually. He'd never been kidnapped before, only now Mirage had changed that. He'd never been bowling before... and he chose not to think much about that, But above all, he'd never had coffee with his nemesis, and had never expected to. Even kings who had been alive for thousands of years don't know everything, apparently.

Though no one would have known it simply by looking at him, he was still hashing the whole thing over in his mind. What had happened, and why? In the end, though, he'd been able to come to only one conclusion. He wasn't exactly sure the why and how of it all, but he was sure of one thing. He hadn't hated anything that had happened, no matter how awkward it had been. Perhaps that was enough.

He'd gone back to his room after the odd chat with Sarah, and been there ever since, thinking it through. Now, however, it was time to get out of there. So he left the room that was the spitting image of his throne room in the Castle at the center of the Labyrinth, after dressing in his more typcial Fae style. Jeremy, it would seem, was not an everyday sort of thing here. And he was much more comfortable in the outlandish, romantic clothing he favored. Mortal clothing was so strange.

The king didn't have any particular plans, he just didn't want to spend any more time in his room. So, thinking he would perhaps take a walk (and just happen to stroll past Sarah's room), he turned the doorknob and stepped out his door into the hallway beyond it.

"Oh!" Sarah said and felt her cheeks flush, startled to see him so quickly after having left her room. She'd thought she might have to wander around the place a while before finding him. She figured she had slept so long that he was likely to be off doing something else somewhere else.

"I hadn't thought I-" she began and then laughed again, easily. "Good morning to you too. I slept okay. No nightmares, which I guess is good considering the way I would always wake up at home with -" And she stopped again, this time biting her lip. Chattering nervously was not going to help her in this situation. Especially when it was leading her toward topics that would just remind him of the past.

Though she supposed that conversation hadn't quite been finished last night. They still had more to discuss, she was sure of it. They hadn't even spoken about the terms of their truce or anything but damn, his eyes. They were penetrating today and she felt herself warm even further whenever he looked at her.

"Um, did you sleep well? Er, do you sleep?" she asked, trying to force some lightness back into her tone.

"I'll understand if you don't exactly rush to accept this offer, but I could make you sleep without dreams at all." He hadn't really intended to make the offer, but he wanted to help. Odd, really, considering he normally would have been completely unconcerned about anyone's sleeping problems.

He smiled at her slightly and shrugged. "I sleep. In fact, I know of very few things that don't. At least on Earth." And he had mostly kept his scrying to those realms. "Without sleep, the mind becomes disordered, concentration is shot straight to hell..." He stopped, and noticed with a sense of amusement that he was rambling now. "Yes, I sleep."

For awhile, he looked at her, and then decided all at once to speak again. "It occurs to me that yesterday, I hardly gave you a proper tour of the resort. There is much to do here." He sneered slightly, remembering the bowling from a couple of days ago, and not at all fondly. But it wasn't all as had as that. "Would you care to see the rest?" It gave them an excuse to be together, and in a less intense way then they had been yesterday.

"Sleep without dreams? How could you -? No, that's fine. Thank you for the offer though." She smiled slightly and shook her head. The only way she could imagine him being able to do what he'd just suggested was to either find a way into her mind -- no way would she want him to see what was in there! -- or use his magic on her. And she was just not ready to trustingly allow him to do that to her. They'd made some progress but she was still wary on that front.

It was nice to know that he slept though. It was no wonder though, as he talked about how disordered the mind became with lack of sleep, that she had been so befuddled for so long. But she highly doubted that would be a problem -- not too much at least -- anymore. Her smile broadened as he began to follow suit and chatter away himself. That struck her as funny and she giggled as he said simply, "Yes, I sleep."

Vaguely she remembered that a tour was supposed to have been in order yesterday but it hadn't happened. They couldn't very well go for coffee again, that would get boring, and there didn't seem anything else safe to do at this point since she was not familiar enough with this place. So she smiled at him and stepped closer as though to walk beside him when he chose to move.

"Yes, please show me around this Planet." She could almost feel a vibration of energy between their bodies. A shuffle slightly further away from him and the sensation lessened ever so slightly. How interesting... "What else have you been doing here since you were first brought here by the Planet?"

She moved slightly closer again and without really thinking about it, made to slip her arm into his.

Jareth, not offended by her rejection, simply nodded. He had wanted her to know that he could, in case she ever needed it. He hadn't expected her to simply rush into accepting it. She'd proved already that she was far from stupid. It would be very unwise of her to rush into anything, and for him, too.

Once more, she was giggling. Considering how their morning had started yesterday, it was probably a good sign that she was able to do so now. Why she was laughing was hardly as important as the fact that she was. Although he didn't really see how the fact that he slept was amusing, but maybe she was laughing about the rambling. Not exactly a common thing, for him.

"As you wish." He smiled at her and offered his arm even as she was reaching for it. He felt a strange sort of energy between them, something that hadn't always been there. Or maybe it had been, but it just hadn't fully developed yet. It did seem to be getting stronger, and he allowed her her experiement before they linked arms and headed out. Not with her following him, nor he her, nor even just in step. They were touching. That had to imply some sort of progress.

He was glad he'd spent the last couple of days exploring, or else he would have no idea what to show her now. They headed off together toward the end of the long hallway and the front door to this building. At her question, he raised an eyebrow. "I suspect you wouldn't believe me if I told you." He could hardly believe it himself, really. "I'll show you the main building, first." Though he'd spent most of his time roaming the grounds, he had also spent some time inside and was glad for that now.

It felt strange to be almost formally walking the grounds with him, their arms linked as though they were no more than a gentleman and lady strolling the boardwalk in petticoats and top hat. That also seemed funny and she giggled at the image. Everything seemed to be striking her as amusing today as nothing had for a year or longer. She hadn't laughed or giggled for so long that it sounded foreign in her own ears. Foreign but nice.

"I think I might believe anything where this Planet is concerned." She glanced at his profile, still smiling from the desire to giggle as it grew inside her again. "Oh please tell me. I'm very curious what you would do on an average day during your abduction." She said "abduction" as though it was scandalous and muffled another giggle.

If that didn't stop she would be completely consumed with laughter and who knew how Jareth would respond to that. Coughing to cover another burst of laughter threatening to escape, she said as seriously as she could, "I know. You fought an army of golems and then went sunbathing."

They were outside now, and it was a lovely day. It always seemed to be a lovely day here, and probably would always be unless the Planet deemed otherwise. It annoyed him, because he was used to having that control over his own realm, but there seemed not to be much point in getting upset about it.

He cast her a bit of a look, but it wasn't menacing or threatening. And finally, he sighed softly. "No, it's much worse than that." Sunbathing... the idea amused him, he had to admit. His skin would never darken, of course, even with the sun. But it was funny to think about, even he could see that.

Jareth raised an eyebrow at the giggling girl, and stepped closer to her once more. As she got happier, the draw towards her grew greater. Was it because she was happy? He wasn't sure. Finally, he shook his head. "I've played Football with a man calling himself The Doctor, and I was forced into..." His lips drew up into a sneer, "Bowling." The look he gave her dared her to laugh.

"It wasn't my choice. A golem picked me up, took me there, and wouldn't let me leave until I'd played the game." Rather badly, at that. Though he'd learned, eventually, he still wasn't anything near a good player. Nor did he really want to be.

Sarah's face broke into such a large smile that she felt about to explode with laughter. But his look was so censuring that she put her hand to her mouth and turned her head to the side to keep herself from actually giggling at him. He'd played football?! That and the image of him in all of his state in bowling shoes, tossing a ball down an alley. It was too much. Her shoulders shook with laughter. Then she pressed her lips together tightly, attempting to force the smile from her face and look seriously at him.

"The golem picked you up? What a brave golem!" was all she could manage.

She bit her lip and looked straight ahead now. The sun shone on her skin and highlighted the slowly fading dark circles under her eyes and the hollowness of her cheeks. She hadn't had breakfast yet and her stomach began to protest softly. Still it all was nothing in the scheme of things because she was about to die of laughter any moment. And if that happened, she might just collapse on the grass. She held his arm a bit tighter and tried to think of something serious.

His eyes narrowed as she laughed, but in truth, he wasn't angry. Yes, there was a time when such behavior would have had him into one of his fits of anger, but that had changed. At least with her, clearly. In point of fact, it was too nice to hear her laugh for him to be upset. And... even he could see the funny side of it, though probably not as keenly as someone else could have. Imagine, the King of the Goblins bowling...

"It will happen to you, too." He spoke in tones of dire prophecy that wouldn't have been out of place spoken by a telephone psychic. "You will one day be minding your own business, when a bizarre stone man will pick you up and make you do something completely ridiculous." He was pretty sure he was right on that, too, since he'd seen others being forced into things as well as experienced it himself.

Jareth glanced over at her, as he seemed to keep doing every few moments or so, and nodded approvingly as the sun lit up her face. She looked better, less desperate, to him. Maybe their talk had been cathartic for her. Certainly something had changed, as he was no longer getting the same vibe of overwhelming self-destruction from her. He raised an eyebrow at her.

"Have you eaten yet?" He hadn't, and it might be a good idea to do so. "If you want, we can stop at the kitchen and get something to eat while I show you Mirage."

Great, she thought. They came and took you places without your consent to play games with other people. That didn't sound like fun at all to Sarah right now. Other people were prone to asking her questions about her health or her... past. Things she didn't want to talk about with anyone really. Except now. She'd talk to Jareth about anything he wanted to talk about.

"So they add insult to injury by re-abducting you here at random?" she asked and she wasn't really smiling anymore. The laughter had drained from her now as she thought about the total lack of privacy and control that she now seemed to have. It hadn't occurred to her to think about it before.

"Oh um no, I haven't eaten yet. I think I could probably eat a horse right now though." Her stomach growled conspicuously at that point and she frowned slightly at its embarrassing her.

Which was when she felt something appear(?!) in her pocket. Reaching in with her free hand she pulled out one of the diet protein bars she had practically lived on during a very bad phase in her recent life. "Wow..." she murmured.

As far as he was concerned, she had the right idea. He hadn't been thrilled to be made to bowl, either, and that sentiment was clearly shared by her. "The other people here are horrid." He thought back to the snarky boy and the cold, falsely polite Japanese girl with a small frown if distaste. Truth be told, he hadn't liked either of them.

"I don't know if all the things they make us do are as inane as bowling, but I would assume so." She might as well be warned. "I would want to go home, but..." He cut himself off there with remarkable tact. This truce of theirs was new enough that he didn't want to endanger it by talking about the destruction of his world.

She reached into her pocket, and he was glad for the distraction. But he had no idea what it was that he was looking at. "What is that?" He assumed she must have had it along with her, so didn't question that part. But it didn't look really like anything he'd seen before.

Sliding her arm from the link in his, Sarah turned the diet protein bar over in her hands and showed it to Jareth. The wrapper was the shiny red foil sort with the words "Carbo-Crusher" in white capitals apparently meant to energize the eater into believing this was a very fortified and important part of their attempt to lose weight.

"It's a sort of food bar I used to eat a while ago. I didn't have it with me when I left my room."

The sight of it brought back a rather horrible memory and her surprised frown slid into a more displeased one. The Planet certainly thought it was her therapist, that was for sure. Prescribing whatever it thought would push her toward recovering. It made her want to throw the red-wrappered bar as far as she could and find somewhere to get a few shots of vodka.

But that's the old Sarah! Stop thinking that way or he's going to change back to what he was before...

Shaking her head and shrugging off the negative sensation, she said, "Let's go get something real to eat. Is that ok?"

He felt the loss, but let her pull her arm from his. If anything, at this point she had more than proved that she was her own person. Trying to hold her would likely be an exercise in futility. And... he didn't want to. He was pretty sure she wouldn't leave, not yet, though not 100% positive. But it was a difference, again.

"You didn't?" He glanced at the thing thoughtfully. "I wonder... how active would Mirage be in giving us what it thinks we need..." He tilted his head to the side, put out a gloved hand, and thought of an apple. It wouldn't be his own illusion, because he produced no crystal ball. The apple, however, obligingly formed in his hand.

"Cheap trick..." He muttered, but it wasn't lost on him that he often did similar things with his magic. He sighed and tossed the apple aside, not having any real desire for it. The whole thing was odd, and seemed to have disturbed her. That was of more concern than an apple.

Wordlessly, he touched her shoulder, asking if she was okay. He wasn't really all that great with words, not unless he was trying to sting someone with sarcasm, which he didn't want to do right now. But he wanted to... yes, he wanted to offer comfort, in some way. And make sure she was okay.

"Of course. I'm hungry, too." He flashed her a smile, lightly teasing her. "And yes, Sarah, I do eat."

It was completely ridiculous that she should feel introspective and frightened standing beside him -- and he wasn't even the cause. That was the stupid part. She was starting to succumb to the routine of her old life again. Probably because the intensity of yesterday had subsided into the seeming comfortability of the moment they were in. Part of her wanted his hand to slide from her shoulder to her waist, pulling her close and giving her a hug. Of all things! The other part wanted to run and hide in her room with a bottle of something tranquilizing. How would that help, though? It couldn't!

All this she thought as he was producing his apple and teasing her about eating. She wished, somewhere inside her head, that she could mean the smile and light-hearted chuckle that escaped her lips as he said, "I do eat." But she was feeling as though someone had rained on her parade and it would never be fixed. Depression and paranoia were sinking slowly into her system again as hard as she tried to shake it.

He really didn't need this. He wouldn't want to deal with her idiotic problems. It was stupid to have this melting of happiness here in front of him. She could fake this for a little while longer, this smile. Couldn't she?

"What will we eat? Rather, what do you, Mr. Goblin King, eat?"

Something about the look that Jareth gave the girl suggested that he wasn't so easily taken in. After all, he had been and was still completely focused on her, and he'd thought he'd seen a struggle on her face for a moment, there. For a couple of seconds, he continued walking with her, before darting in front of her and stopping her with both his hands on her shoulders.

"Stop, Sarah." He looked at her intently, wondering how he was going to get through this. He was going to need to express himself better than he usually did, and it had to come out sounding sincere. Emotion, when he spoke of it, sounded like a joke. Only in song could he seem to put things into words in the right way. But he couldn't possibly sing to her, surely that would bring back negative associations. Not a good plan.

So instead, he did his best with words. "Sarah, you don't have to do this. I don't want you to pretend anything, especially not to be happy." His mismatched eyes narrowed as he looked at her. "If it's just that you don't want to be here with me, but you're afraid I'll try to hold you here..."

He shook his head, having a really hard time with this. Damn it, if only he could sing. And he was messing up the words he was trying to say. He just really was no good at this sort of thing, even on a rare occasion like this where he was actually trying.

"No..." Sarah protested softly. And she knew she was in the worst possible place to have this all go wrong inside her.

Not while he is around. Not now, Sarah!

But this was how it was going to have to be. She would have to reach out if she was going to stay afloat and honest with him. The expression on his face was so intense and he almost sounded self-conscious. It didn't fit but she couldn't care about it right now.

She was going to do this and take the consequences later if it was the wrong thing.

"I'm scared. I've spent so long being scared that it's hard to push it aside and not have it come back fast at the drop of a dime. I do want to be here. I mean I don't want to be on this Planet because it's not safe but... " she stopped because she didn't sound to her own ears as if she was making much sense.

The frustration of this lack of control brought tears to her eyes and that was it. In one hardly hesitant move she was clinging to him, knowing even as she did it that this was probably not the best of ideas. She hoped he would understand that all she needed was to be held until it all felt ok again.

"I'm sorry," she whispered almost inaudibly. "It's either this or self-destruction."

The wave of relief he felt when she protested was a little overwhelming, and completely unexpected. But it was also very real, and he acknowledged that. The problem was becoming clear in a way it had only begun to in the Labyrinth. Despite all his his good intentions, he had done the one thing he'd sworn never to do again.

It was too late for self-recriminations, however. He also knew it was pointless, and there were more important things to deal with right now. So he listened to her as she spoke in a torrent, and every word made a deep impact on him.

Before he could respond, she was flinging herself at him. Never would he have believed that this woman, after everything that had happened betweem them, would seek comfort from him. Yet here she was doing just that, and though he hesitated for just a moment, it was more to see if she would pull away. She didn't, and his arms moved to wrap around her slender form. He held her close, almost fiercely.

"Then this is what you must do." His head was close to hers, his lips against her ear. "You don't have to be scared, Sarah. I'm not going to... laugh at you or make fun of you." In reality, he knew that he would ultimately do anything in his power to keep her safe, and if holding her would make her feel better, even just a little, it was well worth it. Even if it didn't fit with his image.

"The Planet won't hurt us." He spoke with a great deal of confidence, having spent a lot of time thinking about it. "One of the rules is that we can't kill, remember? And no one can invade anyone else's room, either. This place is like a child, but it doesn't want to hurt us. It just wanted to be entertained..." And how familiar did that sound to him? Just wanted to be entertained... though in his case, he had wanted an heir. But putting Sarah through the Labyrinth... he sighed softly and held closer to the girl.

"The Planet won't hurt us?" she asked incredulously. "I guess it has different ideas on what is entertainment and what hurts certain people." It was irrational, she knew, to be more afraid of a golem coming to find her and whisking her away to play pool with random people than to be afraid of the man she was currently clinging to as if for dear life. It was also irrational to be crying onto his clothing about it all. But she couldn't help the surge of fear that continued to course through her. Almost as if it had been her constant friend for so long that she was addicted to it.

Addicted to fear. That thought was mortifying. If that was the case she would constantly be breaking down and throwing herself at him. Maybe she should run away and hide in her room. She didn't want him to see her like this over and over again.

Though slowly, surely, with his words in her ear and his arms around her, she began to feel a bit better. He held her so close that there was hardly room for her to breathe and it felt... secure. She needed to come out of her head and hear him. His tone -- what was that other sound in his voice? -- was one of truth and what he said made sense. And he'd had yet to trick her into anything since they'd met again. He'd been gentlemanly and he'd had her laughing at herself because certainly she was falling a long way down over him...

She lifted her tear-streaked face and smiled just a bit as she said, "Thank you."

Jareth found himself raising one hand to stroke her hair, which felt very soft under his fingers. He'd admired how pretty it looked earlier in the day, but now realized it wasn't just appearances. In a manner he hoped was soothing, though he wasn't all that good at such a thing, he softly petted her head.

"The discomfort is temporary. You play the game," Or, in his case, disrupt the game with random illusions... he still felt a little smug about that... "And then you can go. Although I don't think I'll ever become resigned fully, and as long as people keep fighting, the Planet can't really truly win..." And he knew that very well from when this woman in his arms had been in the labyrinth. If she hadn't fought, and kept fighting, things would have been much different.

With patience that he was fairly sure he had never shown before, he held her until she lifted her face and looked at him. Then, he bent down slightly and kissed her on the lips gently. "To think that you would be thanking me for something... this place is strange." Undoubtedly true, but it was the weirdest thing. He had held some resentment towards Mirage for bringing him here, though it had saved his life. But now that she was here, even that was fading.

"I wonder if..." But he wouldn't voice that thought, that perhaps the Planet had done him a favor, and perhaps her as well, by bringing them both here. Otherwise, he'd be dead and she'd be destroying herself. It was a strange thought, not particularly comforting.

Her lips felt warm and sort of tingled where they had briefly touched his. This visage of Jareth would have confused her more than anything had she not been fighting against a stronger fear. Strange that a stronger fear than he should exist. But it did.

Feeling out of control was the scariest thing she could imagine right now and he was actually helping her feel like there was more structure, less unknown. He'd been here very little time himself and yet he spoke with authority as though a long time resident. Which was fine with her because she both knew he could never speak with anything but authority as it wasn't in his nature, and she needed to hear these things said this way for her to believe them.

"Yes, um, th-thank you for trying to make me feel more comfortable here. Who would've thought..." No, she wasn't going to say that sort of thing anymore. She resolved right then and there to do whatever she could not to bring up the past. It seemed their truce had been made without words and terms set in stone.

A truce of hearts? That sounded so gooey and romantic movie nonsense. Still...

"I think I'll be alright in a minute or two. Keep talking?" she asked and closed her eyes, resting her cheek against his chest, listening to his heart beating.

Softly, he continued to play with her hair, the soft strands slipping through his fingers as he sought to sooth and comfort her. His other arm rested in the hollow of her back, and he continued to hold her close against him.

The really strange thing was, along with the overwhelming surge of love he was feeling for her, he was also feeling a slight guilt. Both were very out of character for him, of course, but a lot of stuff that had happened lately was. But the guilt was due to the fact that he was almost entirely sure that Sarah would not be this willing to touch him, to let him kiss her, if she wasn't so upset. Should he be taking advantage of that?

"Yes, who would have thought." He smile told her that he knew what she'd been about to say, and that he wasn't annoyed by it. Still, he was glad she'd stopped. It really did feel like they had a chance of making this truce work... though the terms had never been agreed to.

At least, not out loud. But he felt there were terms in place, nevertheless. He felt them.

"As long as you want." He rested his cheek against her soft hair and continued to hold her. "You know, I think I would... no, I know I would protect you. Strange."

As the fear melted away, as she felt her mind accept that this place was not as dangerous as say the Labyrinth had been, she began to feel something else. It was a warmth that had spread from her lips after he had kissed her and across her face, down her neck and through the rest of her. It strengthened as his fingers slid through her hair, smoothly and gently as though they were the fingers of a ... lover. Her eyes opened wide but she did not move. Her cheek still pressed against his chest, she explored the sensations that were now starting to surface in the wake of her subsiding fear.

Her pulse seemed to quicken as she listened to his voice and the tone -- again sounding strange and what was that? -- and when he rested his face against her hair she felt goosebumps prickle across her skin in a warm shiver. Her skin burned wherever his hands or body was in contact with her. Burned in a way that was shocking but not unpleasant. She wasn't exactly sure what was happening but she could tell that this was a lot larger a feeling than she had ever been taken hold of before.

She whispered, "Wh-what, is this?"

Jareth had been about to continue his soft reassurances, or rather, what passed for soft reassurances in his mind, when he felt a slight change in the energy between them. It was kind of odd, actually. When they'd drawn together initially, when she'd linked his arm with hers, he'd felt a sort of heat between them. Now, it seemed to have intensified about a thousand percent, and he was nearly certain she felt it, too.

His grip had somewhat loosened as she became calmer, but now it tightened up again. His fingers running through her hair became somewhat more caressing, with more of an intent to excite rather than soothe. Or perhaps this was just a different aspect of the same thing. He wasn't sure, and wasn't thinking about it all that much. He was much more concerned with how her hair smelled, how her slender body felt against him. None of this was at all unpleasant, far from it. He felt her closeness through every single cell of his body.

"I... you don't know what this is, Sarah?" He pulled slightly away from her, using a gentle finger to tilt her chin up to look at him. "This is desire." And love, he thought, though he didn't say it. And then, he was kissing her once more, but this time not as gently. This time, there was hunger in his embrace.

For a long moment there was nothing for her to do as he overwhelmed her senses from every angle. The assault was so perfect that she only wanted to surrender herself entirely into his hands. Her heart fluttered as he kissed her, no claimed her mouth and she could feel that it was exactly as he'd said. Desire. And it wasn't one-sided, she was returning his kiss, her eyes closed tight, clinging to him so closely that she felt the line between them might begin to blur.

Which is when she pulled back. It was a bit abrupt, she knew, but her head was beginning to get fuzzy and she wasn't sure this was a good thing for them to be doing so quickly after everything that had passed between them before. She wanted this. That was clear in the way her cheeks flushed prettily, giving her a very healthy glow to her skin. But it could just be an amalgamation of the intensity they had felt before they'd called a truce.

"I-I'm sorry. I just need to clear my head. I-" she stopped and took a deep breath. Then she smiled at him.

Jareth could feel her giving herself over, surrendering, and it was different than normal because he felt like he was, too, only to her. But somehow, he didn't mind this, when he should have been railing with all the strength in his body against it. But instead he gave himself to the sensation, and to her touch.

He was, therefore, completely unprepared when she pulled away. He looked at her with a question in his oddly-colored eyes, wondering why she would have done such a thing. He'd been able to feel the tension between them, the heat, and one look at her glowing face told him that he wasn't imagining it. But when he searched her eyes, he nodded slowly.

"Too soon." He could understand that, if he were honest. Not like it, of course, but at least understand it. Once more, he reached for her, but only to take her arm once more. "I think it's time to see about getting some of that food we were talking about before."

It was frustrating to her -- more frustration! -- that it should feel "too soon" to her to be here with him in this moment. But there it was and you couldn't rush things or they turned out all... Jack and Sarah. Rings in envelopes and love left on the back burner. She so didn't want sympathy from Jareth in the manner Jack had given it to her.

She looked distracted as she gazed up at Jareth, as he took her arm again in such a formal way. She felt sorry for the way they had parted. It had felt so... well that was for another time. Her actions had begun it and his words had sealed it and they were on for breakfast again as if noting remotely serious had happened.

"Um, yes, food would be a good idea. Thank you." She looked at him with eyes green and intense, to convey importance to him. "Thank you. Jack never would've -" And she sighed at her own stupidity and hoped he'd ignore it.
