Oh, yes, a lot. That's how the Federation of Planets was formed. Every new race we come across that meets our criteria is invited to join and more are added every year or two.

Humans weren't even the first to achieve warp. The first we know of, that we met, are the Vulcans.

That's ... cool. [It really is.]

Vulcans... Like the god of the forge? [AKA Hephaestus, if you were on the Greek side. It would make sense if they were descendant from the god of fire and metalwork.]

It's spelled the same way, but they do not have anything like the ancient gods of Earth. There's no relation, trust me, even though their planet is a lot hotter than Earth.

Huh. That's a weird coincidence. Do they call themselves Vulcans, or is that what humans named them?

What they call themselves.

They might have an older name within their history, but we were introduced to them as Vulcans.

[He still found it weird. Even more so to know it was an alien race's name for itself. No godly or earthly influence, or however it worked in Kirk's world.]

Do you know any personally?

My first lieutenant, you is also my closest friends, is a Vulcan.

They're a very logical species. They eschew emotion entirely in favor of rational thought - in favor of logic, and they excel in science and mathematics. They have almost zero crime on their planet. Crimes simply don't make sense to them.

All of that can make him a bit frustrating, but he's a good person.

[That is ... a lot more than he was expecting. Though it does take care of his follow-up question, if the answer had been affirmative.]

Almost no crime. That's... That must mean their society meets the needs of its people. [He'd seen, and lived, first-hand how easy it was to turn to crime when you were desperate for food, for an extra layer of clothing, for a warm place to sleep.]

IDK what the spelling even was in that last tag, I'm so sorry

Yes, they do. It's more logical to provide for the whole and ensure everyone has their needs met, from food to education. They also believe strongly in the principle of all life being precious, which is one of the reasons they are strictly vegetarian.

That's not to say they're a perfect society, of course. But I believe it is safe to assume they advanced much faster than we did because of it.

It happens! No worries!

Nothing is perfect. But, it sounds like they set a good example. Except for the whole abstaining from emotion thing.

You might think that, but it's a part of their culture, and it was a way for them to overcome violence. They used to be a very aggressive, violent race. Eschewing emotion was their way of rising above that. That is not to say they are incapable of emotion. They form close bonds and families, but they simply don't see the point in getting angry over things they cannot control, or being jealous over something they don't have.

I don't necessarily agree with it being the best route, but it is the route they chose and I see its merits.
