I'm certain that there are many people from the twenty-third century who would know this costume on sight. [Although the words look sarcastic typed out, he's entirely sincere.] More than would know mine.

I guess we can both be satisfied with our costume choices today, then. Seeing as both of them were recognized.

Satisfied as well as surprised! Although maybe my surprise was unwarranted. You're a very knowledgeable person, Dr. Reid.

Thank you? [ Is this an appropriate response. Is this an appropriate subject change. ] So, uhm. How've you been?

[If any of these things are not appropriate, Chekov doesn't notice. He also doesn't foresee any ways in which this conversation could go poorly.] Well, I think, if unproductive. And you?

About the same. [ And since he can't just leave it be, obviously, let's get more inappropriate. ] How are things with Kitty?

[Chekov's expression goes from baffled to startled to nervous before settling on cautious.] Ah. Fine. I care about her very much.

Good. That's, uhm. Good. [ Totally not trying to glance at Chekov's wrist or anything, nope. He's being super subtle, I bet you didn't even know he was even here. ]

Yes. Er... [Chekov's wrist is band-free (for now). He gets the feeling that Reid is checking out his current band status but chooses not to say anything about it. He could be wrong, and even if he's not, there's no way to say are you trying to figure out if I'm sleeping with your ex without being rude or weird or both.

New topic?]

Have you made progress on finding a way back to the prison?

[ Hey, one of these days he needs to cash in on his bet. He's actually a little surprised to find no band, red or blue or otherwise. Are you not putting out, Chekov. ]

I, uh... I'm working on something that looks promising. It's still early days, we're doing a trial run within the next few days so I can't really say if it's progress or not yet.

[For a while there, he'd just assumed that there was zero chance of getting prison-laid. Whoops.]

A trial run! Then you have some confidence in your idea. [Which is more than Chekov has, so he's excited!] Are you operating under the premise that you can think your way out still?

[ That's when they get you. Or, he guesses, that's when Kitty gets you. ]

Yeah, that's the angle we're working. It's, uh... the best idea I got. Nothing else really seems to make sense in practice. [ Speaking of. ]

How's your thing working out?

[That's when his first girlfriend swooped in too, incidentally. Two for two!]

Eh. The less said of it, the better. [He looks profoundly disappointed in himself, which he is.] I am a physicist. Escaping is, I think, a psychological and philosophical problem that I'm unprepared to address.

Well... I wouldn't go that far. Maybe this first stage is more mental than physical, but once we wake up we still need to find out way back home. That, I suspect, is way out of my skill set.

[ So, you know. Don't assume too much. ]

I have been thinking of ways to escape the physical prison that rely on what will be available to us there... [He sounds doubtful, but he's a genius from the Trek verse. He can totally MacGyver an interuniversal portal once they have some reality to work with, probably.]

If there are ways that I can help with this first stage I'm happy to, even if those ways are small.

Thanks, but I think for the time being it's a two person job. I'll get back to you if I need a consult, though.

[ See? They can still be nerd bros, even if Chekov is shacking up with Reid's ex not that awfully long after their messy breakup. It's all good. It's not like he's the kind of guy who holds childish grudges for months and months or anything. ]

Good, thank you.

[Now that you bracket it, it's kind of remarkable that things are as okay as they are. Chekov hasn't been pushing anything because he is too cautious to push, but he's definitely encouraging things along. Actively. Enthusiastically, even.]

May I ask who your second person is?

Rebecca? She used to be on dispatch at the Defence Force. She's, uhm... she's programmed the tech we're using.

[ She's also his best friend in the entire world and the only person left here he'd trust with his delicate cognitive patterns. ]

Oh, yes, Rebecca Crane. [He knows her just well enough to think that Reid has extremely sensible taste in experiment buddies.] I can think of no other two people who are as likely to find a way out of the simulation.

[Well. They might want to add Kirk to their team. He might not be as qualified, but he does have an uncanny talent for getting out of things.]

But no pressure, right?

[ Should probably add the Doctor in there too but he doesn't want to complicate the operation more than it already is. ]

Only the smallest amount. [Teasing. But really, there isn't too much pressure. There are a lot of geniuses, space travelers, and people with ridiculously fantastic luck here; even if Reid and Rebecca fail to learn anything, someone's bound to figure something out eventually.

And not teasing:]
Please be careful. Our real bodies may be immune to injury here, but our minds are not.

I know. Believe me, I'm extremely aware of that. [ And kind of worried about it if he's perfectly honest, considering his mental health history. ]

Yes, of course. [Chekov is worried, too. He also isn't going to suggest that these experiments be put on hold since, if he was in Reid's position, no one would be able to talk him out of pushing on. Sure would be nice if there were expendable minds to practice with, though.]

If we had access to more sophisticated technology here, I would suggest that we store your pattern so that you could be restored if something were to go wrong.

[ Although he understands where Chekov is coming from, that's a whole different kind of disturbing. It's one thing that Rebecca might get a peek inside his brain, but storing a pattern of it? Yeah, that's a little scary. That said... ]

There's nothing to suggest that such a pattern doesn't already exist. After all, if this truly is a virtual environment — and it seems like it is — and people can return with no memory of it but still remember their lives back home, many times past the point of when they originally entered the prison, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to assume the Wardens have a backup somewhere.

[Reid should probably avoid the twenty-third century... or at least transporters. Definitely transporters.]

I would be unwilling to stake your mind on that assumption. [Even if Reid is willing to do just that.] There is also nothing but hope to suggest that we could reach the physical prison so that we would be in a position to access that backup and that we could make use of it if it does exist.
