333 - Rubber Ducky mingle
[Rubber Ducky, you're the one. You make everything so much fun. Which is why you'll find them just about everywhere. Maybe even in that pitcher of tea you just made. Never a dull day here in MarinaNova Asylum. Whether you are trying to beat the heat at the beach or at the pool or running errands you're going to encounter a lot of them.]

Is that what they are? [ she stoops low for a moment to scoop up a yellow duck from the ground, holding it in both her hands. ] A -- what was that, a duck?

[ the word sounds foreign to her, and she extends the 'uh' sound for a second longer than necessary. ]

I take it a duck is some sort of bird?

Yeah... a water fowl. The real deal doesn't look all that much like these. These were made when rubber manufacturing became popular back in my world — the original rubber duck was made as a floating toy in the 40s and over 50 000 000 were sold.

[ This means so little to her and yet he can't help himself. ]

[ maybe it does, but in the wake of her planet's destruction, she's come to appreciate the little things, whether it be stories of one's childhood years or random factoids relating to an innocent rubber toy that seemed to be infesting every nook and cranny of the prison today. she didn't fully understand all of the terminology, but she got enough to get that "40s" was some sort of measurement of time, likely a method of labeling the years, and that 50,000,000 was a large quantity for that time period. ]

I had a few rubber toys as a child, but none that were shaped like bright yellow water fowl. [ she tosses the duck into the air, catches it. ] A couple grazers and a nerf that was purple with bright pink stripes for some reason.

[ nerfs were neither purple nor stripped. ]

[ This is the moment where he makes a mental high five to his awkward, lonely, scrawny 14 year old self. Hang in there buddy, some day you'll get to talk about rubber with Actual Space Princess Leia Organa. ]

I wonder why toy manufacturers always need to make the toys into something cartoony. Do they not think children respond to realistic representations?

[ And if that's the case, why all the realistic looking firearms? ]

Cartoony?

[ while animated holofilms exist in her world, they weren't called cartoons. at least not on any of the core worlds. ]

I don't know. I suppose they aim to appeal to a child's imaginative nature rather than let the imagination itself picture the colors they've already painted on the toys for them. A rubber nerf can be pink without actually being pink.

I understood the point, but I never really got it. I wasn't exactly what you'd call a model daughter. Most girls named their pet pittins things like 'Fluffy' or 'Ribbons.' Me? I go and name mine AT-AV: All-Terrain Attack Vehicle.

[ He can't help but chuckle at that. ] Sounds like something I'd do.

It's... hard. Being different like that, growing up.

[ her smile fades into something much more somber. ]

I had no idea just how different I really was. Those things you saw me do that day with the flooding -- I didn't know I was like that. Not until fairly recently, actually.

My brother. [ she almost doesn't answer him, but maybe she needs to talk about it. ] He was... running off to do something incredibly foolish, and wanted me to know the truth before he did. In case--

[ no. she's not wading into that "what if" territory. ]

He told me I was his sister, and that I had the same power he did. That someone I very much wish I wasn't related to was our father, and that I'd have to find a way to utilize these abilities to do what he'd been doing if he failed to return.

[ Even though he knows all this, could probably recite the lines word by word given the chance, it's a different thing to hear it from her. It makes her more than a princess in a gold bikini, turns her human and relatable and she's right there, so close he could reach out and hug her if he wanted to.

He doesn't do that. Not for lack of wanting, of course. ]

I'm sorry. That must be... difficult. [ And while his own dad is no Darth Vader, he knows a little bit about not wanting anything to do with your dad. ]

This probably doesn't mean much, but... I think you're amazing. You would've found a way, if you had to.

[ she wishes it meant more, but the sad truth is that leia's been listening to such flattery since childhood. it's only increased in the wake of alderaan's destruction, as if certain parts of the alliance are convinced that she'll start coming apart at the seams if she doesn't recieve such constant reassurance in spite of how well she holds herself. she doesn't know if that's any better than the portions who are convinced she's made of stone and ice, cold and unfeeling due to her refusal to let her feelings and emotions get in the way of duty. ]

I don't think I would have. I'm not Jedi Knight and frankly, I don't want to be. Maybe I would've taken it upon myself to end the war, but I was already in a position to lead armies. I didn't ask for this so-called birthright. It may be partially mine, but I don't want the responsibility.

[ looking up, leia fixes her gaze on him. ] I don't know what I'm doing, Doctor. How do I go about accessing a power I didn't even know I had?

Just because you don't want to be a Jedi Knight, that doesn't mean you can't find some use for it.

[ He has two choices here, going with what he knows or treating this like something unknown. During the six months he's stayed here, he's come to understand that the latter choice is also the better one. There's so much he doesn't know, so much nuance lost on the big screen and even more so he doesn't want to end up in a position where he has to explain how he knows all this. ]

Organise yourself. What you know of the power, what you already believe yourself capable of. With the power cap here, that can be difficult but it's a start. Something to work from.

Anyone who could tell me anything about how to use this [ the most she can do is levitate one of the little rubber ducks, and it hovers centimeters away from her fingers in demonstration ] is dead. The Jedi were slaughtered and anyone without a modicum of Force-sensitivity hunted down. My brother had teachers, for a time, but they're gone and not here, and neither is he.

[ her voice cracks upon mentioning luke, but she thunders past the urge to cry. tears never did her any good, and she rarely caves to it. ]

The only I think I really knew how to do beyond this [ the duck falls obediently into her palm, her fingers closing around it ] was find him. I spent most of that first week trying to do just that, but I can't reach him. This is the one and only time I haven't been able to find him.

[ hopefully, he was still on bakura following that senator around like a lovesick gundark. at least whoever was running this place had the decency to grab her from a point in time that was relatively calm, all things considered. she stuck worrying about someone encased in carbonite or facing the emperor. ]

[ Again he's struck with the desire to hug her and again he stubbornly shoots it down. Nothing good would come from that. Not even the tiniest of things. ]

That's still something... being able to do that. If you know how to do that, you can figure out how to do other things. [ Maybe not as reassuring as he wants it to be, but. ] I don't... I'm not pretending to know what it's like. I'm not. I just believe that anything can be worked out if you do it methodically.

[ while she can be very touchy, and has the potential to bite the heads off those who try to insinuate that she's weak or needs to be held up by arms other than her own, she wouldn't object were he to do so. after all, she was willingly sharing these things with him of her own accord. it wasn't like he was someone mon mothma had sent after her who was trying to get her to open up about the things she simply didn't have time for in the midst of war. ]

Methodically. Do we have time for methodical? Or is that all we really have in this Force-forsaken place -- time?

[ that's something else that's been eating at her. she's a very proactive person, someone who gets on the ball immediately, and she doesn't feel like she's done anything to contribute towards getting the hell out of here since she stepped foot in this place. ]

Depends. [ He gives her a wry smile — not exactly the new kid on the block anymore, Reid's almost able to count himself among the ones who's been here the longest. ]

If you stay here... online and conscious, I suppose, then yeah. You'll have more time than you know what to do with. The same can't be said if you fall off the grid, not that I know what really happens with us cognitively when that happens.

[ online and conscious. it's disturbing how easy it is to forget that they're not really here -- a surreal experience for a force-sensitive, who has an invisible essence telling her the man in front of her is real and solid when he actually isn't. the force tells her he's tangible and thrumming with life, when his body is housed in a pod somewhere, the same as hers. the knowledge their captors would have to possess in order to manipulate her awareness...

it was a truly frighting concept. as was what would become of that awareness were her connection to this place terminated. ]

I don't want to think about it. [ she admits, blunt and without cowardice. ]

[ Hey, she's not the only one in this conversation uncomfortable with the concept. Reid has just forced himself to use the right words, because if you don't do that how can you beat it? That said, he's not thinking too hard about the existential parts either. ]

No... of course not. Probably better that way.

Practically everything, if you think about it long enough.
