Day 332 [Action/Open][Video/Closed]
[Action/Closed]
[Morning. She's not quite awake yet, but she feels warm and safe and pressed close to someone and it hasn't quite had time to feel wrong yet.]

[Action/Open]
[Single again. It's getting to be shorter each time. One day is definitely a record. She keeps reaching for her communicator to call Ianto or even Reid, but she keeps putting her hand down again. It's probably starting to look like some kind of bizarre exercise routine to the casual observer. Instead, she settles down in her office at the Defense Force headquarters to look through some of their research even if her mind isn't really on it. Apparently there was also a murder yesterday. She needs to check that out. Part of what everyone went through or standard murderous tendencies?

The door is open in case anyone wants to come in. And if you do, you might notice the band on her wrist which has been blue for quite awhile is now a bright red.]

Hey, can we talk?

Hey... Um, are you busy? You want to do something? We could talk about quantum mechanics or eat ice cream. Or do both I guess. They aren't really mutually exclusive kinds of activities.

(OOC: If anyone would like to call her privately, you can do that on this post too and it's always possible to catch her en route here and there..)

Long way from Chicago and...where in Russia are you from? [She moves around the table to sit across from him.]

Taganrog first, and then Moscow. Approximately eight-thousand kilometers, two-hundred fifty years, and a universe removed from your Chicago, I would guess.

Sounds about right, give or take a yard or two. Piotr was from the Ust-Ordynski Collective in Siberia.

During the Soviet period? That's a rural area, even in my time when there are very few rural areas. Did you go there?

That's right. He was a farmer for a little while before everything changed. I never really had a chance. It was probably sparred more than other areas though.

Siberia is spared from most things, aside from asteroid strikes, criminals, and philosophers. [Inappropriate time for a joke?] I have never been there. I know only that it's cold and undeveloped.

[Nah, it's as good a time as any.] All I know is that the missed it. So it must have had a few good qualities. But maybe he was into asteroid strikes and philosophers. We know he was into criminals. [Since she's here and all.]

Since we have no informed opinions between us, its appeal will need to remain a mystery.

You have opinions about your Chicago, surely. [Not to be confused with the space-future Chicago, which is probably different.] Do you miss it?

Sometimes. It's been gone for awhile. It was one of the cities that got culled early on. It's just in ruins now, but people were trying to survive there. [Some of the other X-Men went back to stop the second culling.]

[He hates himself a little for asking her questions that have such depressing answers. Good job, Pavel. Very helpful.] I can't begin to imagine your world. You would think that we are all very pampered when I'm from.

Not that life is difficult here, usually, unless the wardens are actively trying to make it so.

[Her past is just a mine field of depressing answers. All things considered she's pretty okay with talking about that one.]

When I first showed up I thought that of everyone. I wasn't right, but it did keep me feeling like an outside for ... what time is it again? [Trying for a joke. But it's at least true-ish.]

[He shrugs.] A time prior to mine. Twenty-first century? Twenty-second? It would be unbearably primitive if I hadn't spent two years in a place that was roughly contemporary with this one. Also, the food here is better than the food in the twenty-third century.

I was thinking more Day 332. But now that you mention it I wouldn't be that sure about the century here. I think they can make it look like any time they want it to look like. We might wake up one morning and everything is hover cars or wagons pulled by oxen.

How's the food better? [Food is important.]

I would like hover cars or wagons with oxen. [He probably wouldn't find the latter nearly as charming as he thinks he would.] If they can make us experience any reality they choose, there must be a reason that they selected this one and not a more exciting one.

Food on ships is not always good, especially when we are conserving power and eating field rations. Even replicated food is... questionable. It is an imperfect technology. [Oh, to be in the twenty-fourth century where, according to reliable sources, replicated food is just as good as the real thing.] The food here may not be real, but it doesn't taste artificial.

Replicated food? [She's known so many Trekkers and yet none of them have gone into the details.] How does that work?

Sometimes, not so well. [And yet he looks happy to talk about them.] They operate at the subatomic level—not like our transporters, which essentially replicate matter at the quantum level—to deconstruct existing matter and reassemble it into a different shape. To make food, it first arranges subatomic particles into carbon atoms and nitrogen atoms and so on, then builds these into cells and amino acids, then creates something edible out of those.

Replicators have become very good at atoms, generally, but anything more complex than that... not so much, always. Their capacity to store data is necessarily limited, and they lack the failsafes that transporters have and so are more prone to error. Usually the result is edible. Rarely good, but edible. And they are getting better, of course. My family's first replicator could not assemble anything at the subatomic level, and it wasn't reliable enough to produce something so complex as food that would have been recognizable as food. I have been told that, in my future, replicators are almost as accurate as transporters.

Wow. I've heard of mutants with powers like that, but having the actual tech? Impressive. [She'd seen a lot of impressive tech in her day, and that may not be the most wondrous exactly, but the applications!] So, they must have been able to make more than terrible food, right?

I would find someone who could rearrange matter without a machine far more impressive. [He's pretty easy to impress, though. People who can cook are also impressive.]

Replicators were developed originally to recycle and reproduce inorganic matter, so yes. At the Baltiysky Zavod where my father works, they rely on massive industrial replicators to create the less intricate parts of ships. I think we could fit maybe three, four replicators of that size in this dome.

How do you feel about someone who can pass through it without a machine? [Slipping her hand through the table to be showy.

But she is enjoying the replicator talk.]
Why don't you request one? I mean, not the big ones, but a smaller version. We could probably do something with that.

Slightly less impressive. [Lies. It's still amazing.]

It might be worthwhile, if they can provide one that works. I see no reason to think that would be beyond their capabilities.

[She gets a sweet smile right back.]

Possibly. It could be adapted, and there seems to be no limit to the amount of energy that the dome can generate. A replicator might lessen our reliance on the wardens.

If you have either an original that it can scan and copy or a talented programmer, yes. [Somewhat cautious now that the conversation is turning towards rebellion.] What would you hope to do? Arm us all and storm the kiosk?
